Sad news. All the best to him and hopefully we'll see a bit more of him on the lfc tv channel in the future.

Some great memories of his time here.

He scored the first goals I ever saw at Anfield (2-0 win vs Middlesbrough in the League Cup, 2004). Best of luck for the future, Neil. YNWA

Always sad to retire like that. I had to quit football too like him but unlike him I am sure he will get a job at LFC.tv since he was around everytime I watch/watched it.

I thought they all got them eventually...?

Was told from a friend that Pellegrino, think he was cup tied at the time but travelled with the squad, that he went into the Milan's dressing room and noticed that all their players left their medals. They were the same as the ones the Liverpool players had, so he collected them all and gave them to the Youth kids. That is from one of the Youth kids at the time.

Hope it's a true story because it will be boss if it is. Saying that he used to give us tips who Liverpool were signing and they never happened :)

Gutted to hear about Mellor, always heard good things about him off the pitch, and remember going on a messy Sunday night after he scored against Arsenal!

I remember saying "Remember the name James Mellor!" to my Arsenal supporting friend after that game! I was half taking the piss like but such a shame for the lad! Played his part in history here though.

Has today retired from football at the age of 29.  :(

Many thanks for the Olympiakos and Arsenal goals and that Gerrard assist especially and for standing in when we needed a striker!

His impact in the Olympiakos game will go down in the annals forever and quite rightly so.
That cushioned header was an amazing assist given the circumstances and the intensity of the situation.
Best of luck for the future lad and thanks for some very special memories

I saw his Tweet from first thing this morning and assumed it just meant that he might be moving on to another club, not this. Really sad news for a lad who should still have several seasons in front of him.

I'll always remember him for his contribution in the 04/05 season, in particular the impact he (and Sinama) made in seeing us through against Olympiakos.

Saying that, the rocket against Arsenal at Anfield wasn't bad either.

Good luck with whatever you do from here, Neil.

I echo what everyone says here. In 2004/2005, he stepped up to the plate when we had a major striker crisis. He was integral to that game against Olympiacos, and not just for his goal.

Remember the commentary? "Mellor...... lovely cushioned header..." you know what comes next.

Achieved more in a week (Arsenal goal and the goal and assist against Olympiakos) than many will in a career.

He can retire with a CL medal. Sad for the lad to have to finish early mind.

I'm sure the Club will look after him and keep him involved with the official channel.

Contributed to some of the many magical moments of the 2004/05 season, shame to see his career cut short.

I got the Lucas thing wrong. Will be right on Henderson though. Play him RM, play him CM - Not good enough and never will be.

My first memory of him is when he scored in the Worthington Cup semi vs Sheff Utd!

Thanks for the goals mate
Best wishes
If my assistant had not signalled a goal, I would have given a penalty and sent off goalkeeper Patr Cheh. he beeped me to signal the foul. The noise from the crowd  stopped me hearing it, I have been involved at places like Barcelona, Ibrox, Old Trafford, Arsenal, but I've never in my life been involved in such an atmosphere. IT WAS INCREDIBLE
