Looks like it is happening in 20m.

Going to be an amazing sight if the two side rockets land together like they're supposed to.

Good to see farawayred popping in on here.

Here's hoping this launch is a success.

So Elon Musk has just put his company at the top.

He says that each launch will cost around $90m & the NASA rocket will cost almost a billion per launch.

That was unreal. Like out of a sci-fi movie watching those twin boosters land together.

Simultaneous landings.  Bloody hell.

But the Falcon Heavy has a long way to go to match the capabilities of the SLS, much less the Saturn V.  At the moment it's probably slightly better in terms of payload than the Saturn IB, but it will prosper with further development, and in a multiple launch configuration manned exploration of the inner solar system comes a very serious step closer.

Watching those boosters land simultaneously like that was incredible. A watershed moment for space travel. SpaceX has taken the lead on space travel in less than 10 mins.

The nostalgic in me feels slightly sorry for NASA at this point as they have become less relevant at this point.

So the central core wasn’t expected to survive ...

It had previously been involved in a very high  retrothrust landing on water..  it wasn’t expected to survive that...

They used it again in the expectation it certainly wouldn’t be so lucky this time..

Did it survive?  I mean, even having the option to refurbish and reuse a stage once has huge benefits.

That said, to get the max 60,000kg payload the rocket has to be flown in a non-reuseable configuration anyway.  The configuration launched today is probably great for space probes but once you're into manned missions to the moon and beyond you're going to end up writing off a lot of hardware.

Elon Musk and SpaceX as a company should be proud, what an achievement, that was literally one of the coolest things I ever did see, in a way as a space geek I was always bummed I never got to live through the space race and the hype about going to the launches and everyone watching and being proud of what we (humanity) were achieving... and now I watch that... and the side booster landing in sync... fucking so cool!

Fair play to Elon, the guy is cool and he does things differently, the affordability of this compared to the official government launches is night and day too!

In a way its sad for me that it should governments aren't putting enough cash into the next frontier... or at least not challenging their companies enough... for example if BFR works, the diameter of the rocket and that is what, 9M? Maybe they will push to 10M? Compared to the 3.5M that has always been used which is why sattelites have to be packed so tightly and in origami like fashion, why had no one else challenged that design until now? Was it cause too expensive to rebuild the pads and funding gets cut every year, the whole reusability of things and the landing styles instead of parachutes etc... it's weird it's taken an individual/individual company to put this out there for me, governments have far more people at their disposal (NASA as example - £20B budget per year with 17000+ staff compared to SpaceX with with only 7000 staff but not sure on spending)

Either way, glad the private sector is getting involved and to a serious level, everyone said he wasn't gonna be able to do many things, but here he is, with his people, getting it done.

Shame about the Central Core but it can happen.

I watched the live feed last night on the guardian and was transfixed. What a thing. It is fantastic that human endeavour and space exploration is still producing moments of awe. Watching those two rockets land was balletic. I doff my cap to Mr Musk - the world needs people like him and dare I say it, Richard Branson, who are prepared to invest so much money into these things and whilst I understand that they will ultimately earn huge money from them it is fantastic that they are prepared to take the risk. Modern day versions of the victorian entrepreneurs who have vision.
