I can't really spare the tenner until the weekend but, given my commitment to picking it up, might just find myself a way to give it a listen this evening ;)

Manic Street Preachers 30 Year War (from the new 'Rewind The Film' album) lyrics:-

It's the longest running joke
In history
To kill the working classes
In the name of liberty

The lies of Hillsborough
The blood of Orgreave
All their vision at the BBC

And thirty years of war
To darken all our class
Black propaganda, lies and mistrust
See it in our eyes, the fire dimming away
The old-boy network won the war again

The old-boy network won the war again
The old-boy network won the war again

So you hide all Lowry's paintings
For thirty years or more
'Cos he turned down a knighthood
And you must now settle the score

And the endless parade of old Etonian scum
Line the front benches so what is to be done?
All part of the same establishment
I ask you again what is to be done?

I ask you again what is to be done?
I ask you again what is to be done?

These verses at attention stand
Ready for the immortal command
The armies of my pages may never fight again
Happy for the order to meet eternal flame

Blame the poor
Praise the rich
Make the connections
Put them in print
Keep 'em boxed in
Keep 'em kettled in

Create a mistruth
So bewildering

Create a mistruth
So bewildering
Create a mistruth
So bewildering

So you hide all Lowry's paintings
For thirty years or more
'Cos he turned down a knighthood
And you must now settle the score
And the endless parade of old Etonian scum
Line the front benches so what is to be done?
All part of the same establishment
I ask you again what is to be done?

I ask you again what is to be done?
I ask you again what is to be done?

So you hide all Lowry's paintings
For thirty years or more
'Cos he turned down a knighthood
And you must now settle the score
And the endless parade of old Etonian scum
Line the front benches so what is to be done?

Did anybody go to the gig at the Manchester Ritz on Friday? Just wondering what the set list was like, I know that they will be promoting their new album and playing new material, but it would be a shame if they ditched too many of the classics.

Just go, I saw them play live a week ago and it was awesome!

Brilliant setlist you won't be disappointed. Also the new album sounds fantastic live.

I take it that you went to the Maida Vale gig? I'm not sure when their next gig is to be honest.

No mate was over in Dublin. They were absolutely superb.

I think I've seen them maybe 4-5 times now and never been let down. James did a brilliant job on Rewind the Film singing it Hawley style and they have the trumpets and extra guitar player and keyboardist which really bring the new album to life.

They've announced a new tour and new album,

Honestly they are so underated; the sheer volume of material they have put out and each album bar (Lifeblood and Know Your Enemy have been 9/10 or 10/10 albums)

Phenominal

Gutted that neither the Leicester or Wolverhampton gigs fall on a Friday or Saturday

Leeds, First Direct Arena (March 28)
Cardiff, Motorpoint Arena (29)
 Leicester, De Montfort Hall (31)
Manchester, O2 Apollo (April 1)
 Edinburgh, Corn Exchange (3)
Glasgow, Barrowland (4)
Wolverhampton, Civic Hall (6)
Bournemouth, O2 Academy (8)
Brighton, Brighton Centre (9)
 London, O2 Academy Brixton (11)

This is the second new album so to speak right, the heavier one they promised?

I cannot wait. Saw them a month ago touring 'Rewind The Film' and they sounded as good as any time I've ever seen them.

Great band, shame they aren't bigger than what they are. I have heard a little from their new album and don't think its good at all, think they lost their way a bit the past 2 records. Everything since Send Away The Tigers..

Anyway James is brilliant guitarist and vocalist.

The critics and most genuine fans would wholeheartedly disagree not to mention the Rawk album of the year poll - if anything they've found their way again in the last 2 records.

Don't think there's a story. It was just a look, they wore military style clothing for a while.

Anyone done the run from the Apollo to Oxford Road station before?

Apparently the show's set to end at 22:50 and the train to Hunts Cross is at 23:27.  Alternatively, to Piccadilly for 23:14?

It tends to be for the Academy that I head over on the train - think I've only ever been to the Apollo when I've had the car/a lift.

Easily doable that mate.  It's a ten minute walk to Piccadilly and about 8-10 mins from Piccadilly to Oxford Road if you're just walking normally.  Can cut it right down if you jog for a bit too.  Obviously if you're dead center, front row it'll be another 10 mins to get out of the venue itself but my last train is usually 23:17 from Piccadilly and I've never missed it.

Hoping to grab a ticket on the cheap for this tonight, my second cousins band is supporting so want to catch them but can't really be bothered staying for Manics.  I plan to see them at Glastonbury which'll give me the time to get into them a bit more.

Still buzzing from the Manchester gig last night! I mean, James Dean Bradfield - what a talent! astonishing performance, I love the bones of the man.  ;D

He's boss, testament to them that they sound as good if not better than they did ten to fifteen years ago even. They're incredible.

Saw them in Leeds last week and they've certainly still got it. I can't get over the broad mix of crowd they still attract, it's bizarre, there was certainly a few confused faces during Archives Of Pain!

Brilliant last night.

Loved the little acoustic set of This is Yesterday, From Despair to Where, and This Sullen Welsh Heart (which was just fantastic!).

The Masses Against the Classes was brilliant and 30 Year War should go on to become a staple of their live set if you ask me.

For me the highlight was when they played Die in the Summertime, though - sublime!

Bit cheesed by the train back finishing terminating at Hunts Cross (replacement bus into town) - I had no cash on me so had to walk home after that.  Not arsed, though - boss night.

Awesome, would love a chance to see them play live again, such a great band. The one time I heard them live was when they played a mini-festival in Croatia that was basically them and Bob Dylan and a few local artists before that. Didn't know basically anything about them apart from "Your Love Alone Is Not Enough" which was quite a lot on TV around that time and which I liked so we decided to arrive a bit earlier to catch a few of their songs before Bob's concert starts.

We actually missed the first few songs, which was a shame because "Your Love..." was one of them (the others were "Motorcycle Emptiness" and "Umbrella", some songs to miss in retrospective :butt), but the rest of their gig completely blew me away, despite not knowing any of the songs or anything about the band. James is such a genius on stage, the rest of the band was also awesome, still one of my favorite gigs of all time :)

Nice post.

When I went to the 'Journal for Plague Lovers' tour gig they played the entire album (new at the time) then launched into an amazing greatest hits set after it. It was unreal. They always give value for money. I've never felt anyways disappointed by the manics live. As you said above its impossible for them to please everyone and get something in from every record.

A little bit more info:

Manic Street Preachers’ new album is ‘polar opposite’ of Rewind The Film

Nicky Wire believes Manic Street Preachers fans will discover an album that is the ‘polar opposite’ of last year’s ‘Rewind The Film‘ when they get their hands on ‘Futurology‘ next month.

“It’s quite an optimistic record for us actually, full of life and vitality,” Wire tells XFM. “‘Rewind The Film’ was very much the polar opposite, the tender acoustic intimate mid-life crisis album, but this album just feels brimming with ideas and vitality.”

“We kind of did them together, it’s a very schizophrenic experience but then we’re very schizophrenic people,” he continues of the two LPs. “We recorded so many tracks over the last two years it felt pretty obvious they didn’t fit together so it’s kind of both sides of out psyche.”

The Manics will be at Glastonbury next week; they play the festival’s Other Stage on the Saturday immediately before Pixies and headliner Jake Bugg.

Can't wait for the new record and I'll looking forward to catching their Glastonbury set via the BBC site over the weekend.

Played twenty years ago too:
