There's too much made of these great tacticians at international tournaments.

The most important thing is to get your players to play to their individual potential. England have not managed that since 1996. They are too wrapped up in worrying about failure to do anything positive.

Bob Paisley couldn't manage this England side to win Euro 2012 so they should be taking a longer term view and binning the has-beens and getting the lads who could be successful in 3,5,7 years into the side now. Forget 2012, get the best young players in with about 3 or 4 senior players and let them play a tournament with zero pressure.

It's no coincidence that Rooney's best tournament was his first one.

It's important. Not the only factor but you do need a good coach in these tournaments and a successful one - Del Bosque, Aragones, Rehhagel, Lippi have all been successful in their careers away from major international tournaments. The 'arm around the shoulder' stuff a lot less important than the quality of players, the grass roots culture, the tactics and even the media hype to an extent. All of that is what England should be looking as opposed to a quick fix. Besides, wasn't Keegan that type?

It could also be coming more from the FA than him for that reason, as they know they arent keeping him after the Euros might as well  get shut now that qualification is in the bag, they can get someone new in who has a long enough time to put their own stamp on the team.

The only reservation I have with redknapp getting the job is that he can't bankrupt the England team! Still, lots of opportunities for kickbacks and bribery: I hope they nail his thieving spiv, twitchy, arse to the wall when the extent of his corruption comes to the fore.

Lubberble rogue that he is an'all

How can he be after an extention when the FA have already stated that they arent renewing his contract, he knows he is gone. He is looking for another job and it makes sense to do it now, even if he doesnt leave until after the Euros, but it would be smarter to go now. It means he leaves England in reasonably good shape, he can say look I got you there, now its up to you and the FA have plenty of time to find a replacement.

It could also be coming more from the FA than him for that reason, as they know they arent keeping him after the Euros might as well  get shut now that qualification is in the bag, they can get someone new in who has a long enough time to put their own stamp on the team.
I never said he was after an extension I said he was after a bonus to stay.

I'd be staggered if he was managing these next year.

But they dont want him to stay, he is all but sacked by virtue of them already saying they arent renewing his contract, there is no hope of any kind of bonus for him to angle for.

Beckenbauer/Klimsmann, Van Basten.

My point is not that a great coach can't make things better, it's that nobody will take this England side very far next year. Not Arrigo Saachi nor Paul McKenna.

So they should sacrifice a tournament purely and simply and use the next year for player development including the Euro's.

He is sacked after the tournament but I suspect the FA want him to do the tournament and leave and he is effectively saying, I've got these on the hook so if you want me to finish the contract pay me more.

You're right, England have their level and bringing Redknapp in won't change that. It should be a longer term thing with a target for success and hopefully sustained success. BUT having a better manager is likely to increase your chance of being successful as opposed to a 'likeable' bloke.

The way some of you are talking you'd think England's team is absolute dogshite, we do have a chance of winning the Euros, of course we do, whether we win or not is a different matter but you can't right the team especially with the amount of good players England have...

I think Harry would do well with England to be honest.

No way.
I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

Been saying that for years though and the closest England got with this 'generation' was the quarter finals under Eriksson which wasn't good enough apparently.

He's a better manager than Hoddle, and I'd have said he was probably one of our best England managers in recent years. Was sacked for non-footballing reasons

Knocked out via pens wasn't it? Basically a lottery into the semis and we were unlucky, not bad to be fair, wasn't vs Portugal in Portugal too?

Again we have a good chance of winning the Euros, a team with the likes of Rooney, Gerrard, Terry, Hart as it's  spine with other quality players making up the numbers I.e, Ashley Cole, Johnson, Young, then I fail to see why you wouldn't be at least considered a potential team to lift the trophy.

Hope so, robbed us blind. Redknapp would take this side just as far

Well duhh. Wouldn't you? He's getting a shitload of money to infrequently put out a bunch of primadonna's who won't listen to what he says and his power is too limited to make any difference on a real level.

For one reason or another, you never seem to do it. Didn't Rooney get sent off in that game? Isn't that an England issue too?

That's been said in every tournament for as long as I can remember. Even in 2008.

If that was the case it would more sense for him to do it closer to the tournement, right now there is loads of time to find a replacement, so they can say get fucked. There are plenty within the FA who dont want him, they want an Englishman, there have been continual attacks on Capello from the usual suspects in the press who have obviously been briefed by some FA stooge, this for them would be the perfect time to get rid of him, it smacks of elements trying to get him to walk the plank rather than him playing games for more money. There is no way he is getting more money after all the grief thats gone on over how much he has already got, and thats as much from FA insiders as the press and whinging fans.

Possibly, but I'd still say Hoddle was a pretty good England manager. It's not always the person with the best CV that'll do the best job.

Decent manager but was an insane buffoon whom even the FA assclowns had to sack incase he started ripping into poor people or persecuted minorities for being bad people in their past lives. A fucking loon.

He's a better manager than Hoddle

Don't agree. He's a fucking spiv: feathering his nest via bribes, kickbacks and the old fashioned, 'and in the till, method of making a living. A colossal crook who thrown other peoples money at a multitude of varying ability players: sometimes with success but the scattergun approach is hardly what you would call 'better' management. He's financially ruined several clubs He never gets pulled up for his howlers and mistakes by a friendly, complicit press, constantly spouts shite about fancying other team's players and is lauded like some kind of loveable football folk hero, when in reality, he's been stealing from us all - tax revenue and air.

He and the FA are a perfect match. I hope he gets the job!

Not saying we will win it, I don't think we will (Germany for me) but of course theres a chance, look at some of the players we have representing us? Similarly to other nations like France, they have a chance too, or at least believe they will do, because like us they have very good players all over the pitch who could be capable of winning this tournament.

Disabled crime dropped dramatically straight away.

Exactly.

We are England.

We are always in with a chance of winning.

In the same way you can say this about Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Holland and Portugal regardless of who may be stronger than who at the particular time of the tournament.

This is the case because we are part of the group of the strongest footballing nations in Europe.

Not saying we will win it but we could win it.

If England were a foreign team, people would say we were in with a chance.

Look how everyone is hyping up Belgium yet they have failed to qualify.

Then you have the guy on the other thread telling me how Portugal are a top side even though they failed to top their group.

We are not the best team in Europe.

But we are in and around the strongest nation in Europe.

chance implies that there is some kind of statistical base for calculating that the chance exists in the first place. Like; there is a chance england will be eliminated on penalties or, there is a chance germany will beat england, or, that power hungry mongo will throw a strop when the dirty foreigner tells him what to do.

Unless of course we come up against a better team, which is almost all of the other teams.

Overhyping the other teams as usual.

Most teams in the world are not better than England.

Most teams in Europe are not better than England.

Most teams that will be at Euro 2012 are not better than England.

How long have you been watching England for ???

Overhyping the other teams as usual.

Most teams in the world are not better than England.
Yes they are

Most bookies have England as 4th favourites with only Holland, Germany and Spain ahead of us in the betting.

The reason for that is the quality of players we have.

Would that be English bookies? What about ones in other countries?
