Why so many of them are optimistic about the club's future is what I want to know. I get it could be blind faith and all that but even so, it's pushing it.
Their team this season:
Howard
Coleman
Jagielka
Distin
Baines
McCarthy
Barry
Mirallas
Barkley
Pienaar/Deulofeu
Lukaku/Traore
Very good side, well-balanced, certainly solid with that back four and two good holding midfielders and exciting attacking players but a lack of proven goalscorers (which has been their downfall in several games, thus their high number of draws).
But, should they fail to get Champions League football then next season things are looking grim for them. The defence and goalkeeper they have been so reliant on this season will have several players (Jagielka, Distin, Howard) a year older, already there are in to their thirties. Same goes for Barry if he joins on a permanent deal as I suspect he will. Then they lose the goals of Lukaku, their backup striker Traore and are left up top with the crock Kone and Naismith. Pienaar's already declined a lot and will do moreso, same goes for Osman. Deulofeu, back to Barcelona most likely or on loan elsewhere. Barkley and Mirallas, I reckon at least one will leave, it's rare that a summer goes by in which The Ev don't cash in on at least one big asset.
That leaves them in a sticky situation. Martinez is a good manager but it won't be long before he becomes frustrated with their lack of resources. He'll have to hit the jackpot with two or three more loan deals you feel and make the most of whatever minor amount of cash he's serviced.
The Everton fans I know are extremely annoyed at losing three of their last four games. They felt this was the year for them after such a good summer transfer window and with Man Utd declining rapidly, Tottenham scarred having wasted so much money and us being shite (according to them a few months back). Yet it looks highly unlikely they will be dining at the top table in Europe.
I look forward to them being in embroiled in a battle for 7th next season with Southampton, Newcastle and Swansea.
