I'm not sure how it works to be honest and I've not really looked into it. It does work though. My missus lost eight pound in a week on it and I've lost over half a stone now.

The only Mullers that are free are the Muller Lites. I've not looked at the ingredients for them though. Some of the meals they suggest in their books are lovely, if you go to the meetings they have loads of recipe books you can pick up cheap - curries, desserts, all kinds.

I think I'll give it a go. It'll help my parents out as well if we're all on it at the same time. I'm not big into the group meetings though so I think I'll stick with the online version!

In 4 months ive gone from 16 stone to 13st 12 as I sit here. Just hammered the gym - eat pretty much what I did but maybe a tad less. Drink like a fish still at times. I know beer is full of cals but I swear I have gone on all day sessions, had a bite to eat here and there (no big meals) and Ive weighed myself next morning and Ive lost a couple of pounds. Go out for a sunday dinner, the works, starter, dessert and a coke to wash it down, and I can easy put on 2 pounds.   ???

I just try and do 1000 cal workout a day, try to keep to the 2500 eating wise and fuck all the diets - they would make me miserable. Oh and for those who still struggle to give up pot noodles, asda good for you own brand, 100 cals a pot as oppose to the golden wonder lot which are nearly 400 cals.

Beer is a diuretic so the reason you'll lose weight is you are pissing away body fluids as well as the ale (hence the dehydration and hangover). Over the day, as you replenish your hydration you will gain the weight back.

I'm just trying to lose a stone ready for footy season again. I've cut out bread after chatting with colleagues about its impact on the body, since monday and I feel so much better.

Doesnt sound much but id go through 4-6 slices a day! Started swimming and rehitting the gym. I'm an active person in general just not to the physical training intensity I need to be.

That is absolute nonsense!  Beer, lager and cider are some of the worst things you can consume if you want to lose weight!  The simple problem with beer is that it's high in calories - a pint of standard strength bitter has 170 calories, and is easy to knock back. Two pints - or 340 calories - is worse for your waistline than eating a Mars bar, so you can see how it all adds up. Premium lagers can have nearly twice the calorie count.

Scientists aren't exactly sure why, but alcohol (of any type, it doesn't just have to be beer), tends to encourage the preferential laying down of intra-abdominal (belly) fat. The problem with this is that abdominal obesity is linked with higher risk of diabetes and heart disease.

If you want to carry on drinking beer without getting fat, the only way to do so is to factor the calories into your diet. To keep your alcohol intake within safe limits you should also stick to no more than a pint of standard strength beer a day.

Please read my post again. I never said it helps you lose weight (long term) but the morning after a session it may 'appear' you have lost weight as you have passed lots of water due to the alcohol consumed being a diuretic. Once body fluids are replenished you will put the weight back on, and a little bit more due to the calories in beer (as you said).

Worth reading if interested about alchol and weight loss:

Alcohol is labeled as containing 7.1 calories per gram. But the real value is slightly lower. That's because alcohol elicits a thermogenic response, which means it raises your metabolic rate for some time after you drink it.

Once this rise in metabolism is taken into account, the "true" number of calories in a gram of alcohol is somewhere between 5.7 and 6 calories [2, 6].

Whether or not alcohol is "fattening" is a very controversial subject, mainly because the main fate of alcohol is NOT to be stored as fat. In fact, less than 5% of the alcohol you drink is turned into fat. Rather, the main effect of alcohol is to reduce the amount of fat your body burns for energy.

Some evidence for this comes from research carried in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition [4].

Eight men were given two drinks of vodka and sugar-free lemonade separated by 30 minutes. Each drink contained just under 90 calories.

For several hours after drinking the vodka, whole body lipid oxidation (a measure of how much fat your body is burning) dropped by a massive 73%.

Rather than getting stored as fat, the main fate of alcohol is conversion into a substance called acetate.

In fact, blood levels of acetate after drinking the vodka were 2.5 times higher than normal. And it's this sharp rise in acetate that puts the brakes on fat loss.

To summarize and review, here's what happens to fat metabolism after the odd drink or two.

A small portion of the alcohol is converted into fat. Of the 24 grams of alcohol consumed in this study, roughly 3% was turned into fat.

Your liver then converts most of the alcohol into acetate.

The acetate is released into your bloodstream and takes precedence over the metabolism of protein, carbohydrate, and fat.

The way your body responds to alcohol is very similar to the way it deals with excess carbohydrate.

Although carbohydrate can be converted directly into fat, this doesn't happen unless you're eating massive amounts of carbohydrate.

Instead, one of the main effects of overfeeding with carbohydrate is that it simply replaces fat as a source of energy. By suppressing fat burning, it enables the fat in your diet to be stored a lot more easily.

It's important to point out that alcohol is only having this effect while it's being metabolized by your body.
When researchers have looked at the effect of alcohol calories over an entire day, rather than just for a few hours, they find that alcohol increases fat storage only when you take in more calories than you burn off [1].

So if you drink and take more calories than you burn off, you’re more likely to store the fat from the food you're eating because your body is getting all its energy from the acetate in the drink.

The reason that alcohol has such a bad reputation when it comes to weight loss has more to do with the fact that it acts as a potent appetizer than anything else.

In other words, you'll eat more food if a meal is served with an alcoholic drink than you would if that same meal was served with a soft drink [5, 8].

So you get hit twice — once from the calories in the alcoholic drink, and then again from the subsequent increase in appetite and calorie intake.

Talking from personal experience, alcohol also seems to make me feel hungry the next day. The morning after a few drinks I always wake up with a stomach that feels as empty as a hermit's address book, even if I've eaten a large dinner.

Let's cut to the chase. Can you drink alcohol and still lose weight?
The answer to this question is a definite yes, just as long as you're sensible about it.

In one German study, 49 overweight subjects were assigned to one of two 1500-calorie diets [7]. The first diet included a glass of white wine every day and the other a glass of grape juice.

The wine group actually lost slightly more weight — 10.4 pounds versus 8.3 pounds in the grape juice group — although this wasn't a statistically significant difference.

Earlier research also shows that drinking two glasses of red wine with your evening meal is unlikely to lead to weight gain [9].

Obviously there's a balance to be struck. You don't need to cut alcohol out completely, but if you're trying to lose weight, cutting your intake in half is a good place to start.

The simple way to do this is alternate whatever you're drinking with water or some other low-calorie drink. So you'd have a cocktail... then a glass of water... then a cocktail... and so on. If you drink a glass or two of wine every night, try drinking every other night instead.

In summary, the idea that alcohol automatically turns into fat and goes straight to your waist is mistaken. Alcohol does put the brakes on fat burning while it's being metabolized by your body. But it won't cause fat gain by itself, and is no more likely to put the brakes on weight loss than excess calories from carbohydrate or fat.

I'm getting some T5's next week for the first time, has anyone ever had them? Did they work? How did you use them etc?

I use them (well a similar product, Reflex Thermofusion) before workouts if I'm feeling low on energy. They're essentially a massive caffeine boost which gives you two benefits - firstly it hypes you up and helps you work out harder (I don't drink tea or coffee so the effect is exaggerated) and secondly, and most importantly, they have been shown to increase the speed in which you turn stored fat back into energy (mobilisation of fatty acids/triglycerides from adipose tissue increases by an av. of 10%). There are also studies that show it helps endurance.

I take two before working out plus lots of water. The instructions advise taking them more frequently, sometimes 4 before working out, before breakfast and lunch too, which will give you a decreased appetite but I'm wary about such high concentrations of caffeine. (again I'm sensitive to caffeine so this might not apply for you) 2 pills = 1 250ml red bull give or take

Don't take them after 5pm or you'll be up all night. :D They'll help you lose an extra 1-2 pounds a week, maybe more if you're strict. To get the most out of them, and at the price they are I'm sure you want to, then working out at the same time is a must.

Unfortunately they don't work too well if you're just sitting about. :/

My routine for the last week:

Breakfast           Banana
Lunch                 Slimfast drink (skimmed milk)
Snack                 Apple
Dinner               Low fat soup

Lost 4 lbs in the week.

I don't think your body goes into starvation mode unless you're not actually eating anything. Which is why it's important for dieters to eat more meals, but smaller portions and healthy snacks.

Yeah but then as soon as he stops his diet and starts eating normally again won't it just all be put back on again, because his body and metabolism will be used to very little food?

BMI is utter bullshit.

It's just a number Andy. It gives a value that relates weight to height and in those simple terms it's a good indicator of whether an average, non-athletic, person is overweight or underweight. I'm using it to measure how I'm doing - that's all. If I need to check whether or not I'm ill then I'll go to my GP.

That's horrible. Why not just eat better? I wouldn't touch anything like Slimfast or 'diet' soups - they may be low fat but they are full of additives, emulsifiers, fillers and thickening agents. If you want to stay healthy and lose weight just eat less shite. They also keep your taste-buds accustomed to sweet flavours like sugar, chocolate and strawberry.

Totally agree Alan. I found I needed to retrain my brain, and to do that I had to avoid shite and sweet stuff. After a few weeks you start to get used to it and make healthy meal choices without even thinking about it.

On The South Beach I lost nearly 4 stone and was eating healthily plus swimming or gym every day. Got down to 15st 4lbs from 19st and a bit. Put about a stone back on from eating shite while my Mum was dying in hospital and just reverted back to my old ways of eating. Tried WW and got back down to 15st 7, but as soon as I stopped point counting it went back on again.

What I have found with both WW and Slimming World is they allow you to eat shite food, I think Mullerlight is somehow tied in to SW, cos they push it like fuck, even though its full of sugar (2 heaped tea spoons per pot). WW pushes the Heinz meals and stuff like chocolate brownies, so you end up eating food thats not good for you, cos it can be eaten in your points. This just encourages bad eating habits. You'll always lose 6 - 8lbs in the first week, its nearly all fluid.

I'm now gonna fuck these money leeching diets off and just eat proper, healthy food, no more processed shite and move my lazy arse and make sure I get regular exercise.

My routine for the last week:

Breakfast           Banana
Lunch                 Slimfast drink (skimmed milk)
Snack                 Apple
Dinner               Low fat soup

Lost 4 lbs in the week.

Yep, 4lbs of water and if you keep on like that, you body will use your muscle for energy and store fat.

Please don't spread misinformation about protein shakes, times they are a changing. There are plenty of non-artificial natural protein drinks on the market with non-artificial colourings and sweeteners from fruit/veg and the like. Again with the emulsifiers (fatty acids) and thickeners where things like xanthum gum or gum arabic are non-artificial.

In Slim Fast the worst thing in them is an artificial sweetener like aspartame or sucralose and an artificial anti-coagulant (as an alternative to salt). Everything else is from a plant or diary source. Now don't tell me you'd ignore 25+ years of rigorous scientific testing of these compounds in favour of refined sugar which is worse for you because its "natural"? It may have been true in the past but nowadays protein shakes can be termed healthy and nutritious. (there's a reason athletes drink them)

I concur that the above diet is bad, you could eat more and lose less - there's no need to be so extreme.

Fad diets are a crock of shit in my opinion, you need a lifestyle change and be ready to stick with that long term. I don't think it's as hard as alot of people make out either. Once you've made the change you don't miss eating all the crap.

I don't know why everyone preaching about diets all of a sudden.

I get up - drive to work - sit at a desk for 11 hours - drive hoime and sit down till bedtime

My calorie intake should be taken into account of my calorie expenditure.

But you're not factoring in your metabolic rate, which is the rate at which you burn fat just by being alive. If you don't eat enough to satisfy the minimum requirement for you, you're starving your body.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basal_animal_metabolic_rate

You're probably consuming less than 1000 calories a day. Yes you might lose weight, although I think a lot of it's going to be water, but you are starving your body in the process and you're starving it of what it needs to perform its most basic functions. Not healthy.

We're all just offering tips Effes, somethings work for others some don't. If it works for you and you're happy with it then there's no problem. Now you mention your lifestyle it sounds more sustainable and less like starvation, but there are healthier ways. We're all trying to shed some pounds, lets not shed the love too :D

OK - say your theory is true - surely it would be true for the first week or so??
Later weeks it will be fat I'm losing.

Don't forget - Im drinking plenty of water/tea also - so my fluid intake is high.

I reckon you're all losing yourselves in theory

Why are you taking the diet option out of interest? and not just go for a run 2 - 3 nights a week... I smoke, drink and can be a lazy twat... but if i'm putting on weight, i don't compromise what i eat - i just make sure i work it off.

Are you taking any vitamin/mineral supplements as well? Even if you disagree with what we are saying about the amount of calories you are taking in, a Slim Fast drink only contains about 1/3 of your RDA of various vitamins and minerals and you're sure as hell not making up the deficit with an apple, a banana and a can of soup.

Fats and carbohydrates are also not a bad thing, and your diet doesn't seem to contain any. You need them for energy and I don't mean for running around, I mean for things like your body repairing itself if you get cut for example.

Just because your diet is (super) low calorie and involves fruit it doesn't mean it's nutritious and you can easily become malnourished.

You mean the "healthy part?" - Im eating fruit and low fat soup - not "unhealthy"

Fair play, we're all different i suppose! - i know i can eat all i want and work it off by doing lots of cardio exercise (27 by the way) guess i'm still young enough to get away with that though.

OK - I take what you are all saying on board - but this is not something I will be doing over
a long period of time (6 months or so) it is "crash-dieting" for 2/3 months and then I will ease
into a more "balanced" diet"

But what I will always try to do - is eat according to my calorie expenditure

Anyway - that's enough of me - I'll keep this thread updated in due course
