Cahill, Agger, Skrtel and Carra as our centre back options would be great. Add to that Wilson and Kelly, we are pretty much sorted.

Too many players.
If we think about Kelly, he's done a very good job at RB. Very good. Spearing has shown he can play at this level. Insua showed it last year. Ayala did well for us. Wilson played half a season for Rangers, including CL football and he's played for Scotland. I think we should use the momentum and get them involved. If we have four experienced CBs, not even all four of them will get to play. Wilson, Ayala and Kelly won't get to play, for certain, and we might slow down their progress as an effect.

Talk on twitter that we've been watching Willian again. Like many others we've been linked he has just one year left on his deal come the summer. Sounds like Comolli is going after players with contracts running down in order to get the "bang for their buck" FSG desire.

Carra and Skrtel should be fighting for 1 place - now selling Skrtel for 6m or so would enable us to buy a ball carrying CB  that could replace Agger or even play along side him - Wisdom could step up to be the other solid CB if needed. Kelly can also play CB.
Then you have only one top defender you can depend on to start most games in a season, defense in one area you don't want to chop and change every time Agger gets injured and comes back in.  It's a tough balancing act though Agger/Skrtel/Carra/Kelly/Wilson/Wisdom/Ayala

Skrtel is a frustrating case because he's never had a whole season of consistency, albeit his best was season was interrupted by a nasty injury rather than bad form. He was one of the worst performing players under Hodgson, a clueless wreck and complete confidence free zone getting bullied by everyone. He's been really really solid since Kenny and Steve Clarke took over, so I don't think he'll be on the way out, plus he's fit for every game, which is a huge asset and he's still young.

That said an upgrade on Agger (in terms of fitness) and Carragher in terms of football would both be desirable as Soto has never been up to the mark, while never being less than committed to the cause.

Carragher is still and excellent defender, but without someone else to give the ball too, he will frustrate us.
Under Roy the entire defense was crap, Skrtel has gone full circle sine Kenny 's been here, he was poor in the first couple of games but he has been very good and back to his form when he first got here. Carra still has one more season in him but if we sign a new CB one will one will definitely leave

There's some info and videos about him here. http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/opinion/blogs/mirror-football-blog/Chelsea-and-Liverpool-transfer-target-Willian-of-Shakhtar-Donetsk-10-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-Brazilian-plus-video-of-him-in-action-article720253.html

Nice quotes as well about us in a recent interview.

“It is flattering to hear teams such as Chelsea and Liverpool could be watching me.

“Every time I get the chance I watch Liverpool. They are a very important club and a lot of players would jump at the chance to play for them.

“I have watched players such as Luis Suarez and I have a lot of respect for them.

“Despite all their problems they have a great chance to get back to the top of English football again. I remember watching their midfielder Lucas doing an interview for Sport TV in Brazil and he was showing a camera crew around.

“He spoke so highly about Anfield and we saw that the facilities behind the scenes are fantastic.”

Carra, Agger, Wilson, Kelly(his best position is CB), Wisdom + new CB should be enough - 6 CB's. We don't need to add there.

I haven't even counted Ayala - 7 CB's

We just need improvement on the current starters and Skrtel will give us the biggest resale value. I would sell and buy better.

Agree with Fordy here, getting rid of Skrtel and Soto then replacing them with someone like Cahill would leave us with the first choice pairing of Agger & Cahill which would be an upgrade on what we have now. Then when Agger gets his innevitable injury or Cahill needs a rest then Carra can come in and cover leaving Wilson and maybe Ayala getting games in the cups. Kelly stays as back up/cover to Johnson and we sign a LB leaving Aurelio as back up for the final year of his contract means Flanagan and Robinson have a chance to break through if they are good enough.

Your mate Dzsudzsák plays in the Eredivisie which is also a weak league, he's also not PL proven. I guess we shouldn't be looking at signing him too then.

But Dzsudzsak > Marveaux, easily...

Good point.
And if you look at the (probably somewhat outdated) list of these players who have a year left, there are some pretty big names
http://www.transfermarkt.de/en/suche/detailsuchespieler/suche.html

Young, Menez, Turan, Clichy, Gameiro (43 goals in 94 games for Lorient), Gary Cahill, Tranquillo Barnetta, Toivonen, Enrique, Wijnaldum, Adam, Dzagoev, De Rossi, Flamini, Mertesacker, Sotiris Ninis...Faran, Willian, Gervinho

Big names (albeit not world class except De Rossi) for possibly cut price.

We just need improvement on the current starters and Skrtel will give us the biggest resale value. I would sell and buy better.

We also have Mavinga, McGivern, Sokolik, Regan, Sama and Mendy all as reserve players though further away from the first team.

The best solution I think is to sell Skrtel, Agger, Kyrgiakos, Ayala, Mavinga and Mendy and bring in Cahill & Vertonghen.  Should be enough coverage in a season without European football. We can add another if none of the younger have established themselves by the following summer.

It leaves us with
Vertonghen, Cahill, Carra, Wilson, Wisdom, McGivern, Sokolik, Sama

Considering we play around 10 less games next season (none in Europe) that should be more than enough.

Aston Villa have slapped a £25million price tag on England star Ashley Young.

The 25-year-old is almost certain to quit Villa Park this summer after breaking off contract talks.

He’s been with the club more than four years following a £9.65m move from Watford, but will have just 12 months left on his deal by the summer.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Spurs are all keen and Villa privately admit they have little choice but to sell the ace as delaying could see him go for free.

Young has told pals he is still undecided about where he will play next season but is looking to boost his pay from £65,000-a-week to nearer the £100,000 mark.

Villa are confident they can achieve their mega valuation, given Young’s recent performances for England and the fact so many big clubs are in the hunt.

He would certainly be an improvement to our left wing but thats not saying much is it.

Well obviously they are fucking thick. If they want to try and price their star man out of a move for the sake of on more probably unhappy and distruptive season then I do feel sorry for Young. Although I doubt thats probably true in all honesty, he'll go for about 14 million.

Jesus Christ. IF it is true, that is just plain stupid. One of the main positives of Young was the fact that he would be cheap relative to his quality. If there putting a 25 million price tag on him, you might as well go for Hazard or Sanchez for the same price/slightly more; younger, seamingly of the same quality, with much more potential

Yeesh...if we spend 25m on Young, that'll just about kill all of the excitement I had for the summer window. I'd say 13-14m tops.

Here's an utter BS article that puts forth what would be a dream move:

Joe Cole plus 8m! If that were true my hairline would immediately cease its recession out of joy!
You know what, I'm writing this here now and I'm going to put it in my signature and leave it there for the next 5 years, no matter how embarrassing it might or might not turn out to be: Jordan Henderson is going to be a fantastic player.

25 mill, i think they will be lucky to even make what they paid for him a few years back. He has made it clear he is going to leave the ashley young holds all the cards, plus this year he has been average anyway.

Been average for a number of years to be honest; It's just now, after those good England games he has become a world beater in the eyes of the media. To me, I think he's got the same level of skill and natural ability of Babel, but unlike babel, he uses this ability. I believe that if we got him, he would be like what we saw from babel in the first season; a good player for the team, but not nesacerilly a world beater, or someone who could make something out of nothing when were playing poorly.

I'd have him at the right price, definate improvement, and as stated, would be a good member of the team, but I won't really be bothered if we miss out on him

I have bought the recent FourFourTwo magazine and Carroll was our main target in Summer, so I'd expect us to go for another striker in Summer. Comolli also said we won't be buying players where promising youngsters are otherwise there's no point in the academy. He also said he wants to sign big players.

Comolli also said we won't be buying players where promising youngsters are otherwise there's no point in the academy.

We won't sign anyone then.

25mil?  No way...they can slap that price tag on him 'til the summer a year from now and watch someone snap him up on a free.  No one will pay that.  Probably all BS though...

Were we not strongly linked with Elia during January? Will we be going for him during the summer?

We weren't linked with Carroll at all during January, and he was our "top target" for the summer. Paper/twitter/internet gossip is best ignored.

Don't be surprised if all our signings come out of nowhere.
