Just ordered Taylors of old bond st. Lemon lime shaving cream. Nextbon hit list is a new brush and razor.

Turned up whilst i was away with work. Used it this morning and even though i only dipped the brush in, was enough to shave with twice (had 4 days of growth to shift)

Will hopefully be even more impressed when shaving every day.

Simpsons burushes are the best you can get, but all the ones on that website are good quality brushes.

Think it's a royal pain in the arse, and I don't enjoy shaving at all.

However, there is an Indian Gent's Salon that we go to know, and for a Fiver you get your haircut, cut throat shave and a propoer Indian head and shoulder massage!

Bargain!

I think it does a very decent job, cools your face instantly and does what it says on the tin basically.

I am not a fan of Nivea as it gives me
spots. An excellent post-shave balm that doesn't break the bank is Bull Dog. In fact I have found all of their products excellent.

Edit: just spotted that Bull Dog products are half price in Boots at the moment.

ANyone got a good aftershave moisturiser? a non alcohol based one!

For years I've used a more-or-less pure aloe vera gel. It's fecking fantastic. I've had the current bottle for about 4 years, it doesn't smell (and thus interfere with your aftershave), and it's absorbed *very* quickly. Before that I used Nivea cream, and it just sits on your skin, and in summer it left me with big, fat pearls of sweat sitting atop the layer of moisturiser.

Wouldn't recommend anything else (except for Geo Trumper's skin food, but that costs silly money).

Never shaved as much since I grew my beard. At first I grew a beard because I couldn't be bothered shaving, then as I intended to shave it off I thought I might keep it. Now I shave every other day to maintain it. Damn you slight improvement with facial hair. Damn you!

Has anybody on here ever tried this stuff for shaving?  I got a free sample of it and ordered some soon after, it's the best I've ever found.  I let me brother and a mate try it too and they've both ordered some too.

Advice needed.

My brother bought me a brush/cream set from Talyor of Old Bond Street for my birthday recently and I'm hoping to get a safety razor for Christmas, if I drop enough hints.

After reading through this thread, I've got the following razors in mind:
Merkur 34C
Merkur 38C
Gillette Slim
Gillette Fat Boy

From my limited knowledge am I right in thinking that the Gillette Slim & Fat Boy are older razors and I will be getting a refurb/second hand model, is that right?
Also, I only know of the Merkur razors from on here, could anyone point out the differences to them for me or even point me to some reference?

Cheers.

I think you're right about the Gillettes being second-hand. They are harder to clean than Merkurs.

The difference between the Merkurs is the length of the handle. The 34C has a short handle, and the 38C has a long one (and is a lot heavier, too).

If I were you, I'd get the Merkur Progress, which I have, because I am me. It has an adjustable blade angle, which is great for longer stubble.

I'd get a Gillette Fat Boy. You will find some good ones on eBay. Lovely hefty razor with great balance. Expensive though - good examples are about £50. Slims are also excellent, with the same head but a different balance. These are cheaper to buy, but this is only because more of them were made. Quality is just as good. You also get to tell people you use the same razor as James Bond. Cleaning them is bot a problem, just use a cotton bud for the harder to reach bits.

Just bought a beard trimmer. What a difference it makes. I'm a fairly lazy shaver as I have a beard, so it's more or less trimming the asymmetric parts then shaving. But trimming the parts I keep and taking off the excess of what I shave saves me like 10 minutes each time. I know it's kinda idiotic, but I never realised how big a difference a few millimeters in beard length make when shaving

Cheers for the replies.

I like the idea of the Merkur Progress, but not sure if like the yellow/ivory adjustment at the bottom.  Quick search shows that there is a guy out there who would 'convert' the knob to install a polished stainless stell knob (pic below), but think thats getting a little extreme.

As for the Gillette Fat Boy & Slim, I just dunno how I feel about spending the guts of £50 on what is essentially something second hand.  I know that sounds silly as I can appreciate what the Fat Boy/Slim are/resemble but I think it's more of a case of I want something to be new when I get it.

Probably shaving against the grain. If you're anything like me, though, the stubble on your Adam's apple grows in all directions.

Once I started using the safety razor/straight razor, I never got razor burn again.

I understand it too, but the quality of the Gillettes is so much better. The way to think of it is that you are using a piece of shaving history. It is very easy to sterilise a razor by boiling it in a pan of water for 5 minutes, and there are a lot of pristine examples available. Anyway, to each his own, but once I'd tried a Fat Boy, I gave my Merkur away as I knew I would never want to use it again.
