Forget the diving or that he plays for Real Madrid and played for Utd, I just dislike his general demeanor.  The little poses he strikes  (whoever came up with the 'prancing pony' nickname is a genius) when he doesn't get a shot on target from 35 yards and shakes his head in disbelief as if saying 'Why me God! what have i done to deserve this!', the flailing arms to the ref when he dives and the ref doesn't bite, the bollockings to this team-mates when they don't pass him a ball when he was unmarked, not celebrating a team-mates goal off a goalkeeper's penalty save because he missed the penalty, etc, etc.  He just comes across as an egomanaical arrogant gobshite and for a lot of people that's a big turnoff.   

And it's a shame because he is amazing as a footballer, physically incredibly gifted and without a doubt has put a ton of work into becoming the second best player in the world.

1. Yes, he's an absolute twat. I don't think there are two ways about it.

2. It's VERY clear he's one of the hardest workers around - on the pitch, on the training field etc. Whether it be because he's selfishly driven or whatever, his pure determination is staggering and very admirable. It's sort of like Beckham in a way - all that glamour, glitz (admittedly Beckham wasn't a complete twat) and all that but by all accounts he trained very hard and was sincere about his football. Except that Beckham couldn't lace Ronaldo's boots.

I admire the Portuguese twat in a weird way. I think as it is he's very close to becoming as good as the old Ronaldo was.

As someone said though, it would be interesting to see how he adapts when he starts losing his physical abilities - still a good 4 or so years away anyway.

The assist number shows the difference between Messi and him.  Messi is two goals behind him so far in the league (19-17) but leads the Spanish league with 10 assists so far this season (obviously not counting CL, Cup, etc).  Also out of those 19 goals, 5 are penalties compared to Messi's 1 .

I know no one said anything about Messi, i brought it up.  People can bring up different ideas into a post and i chose to compare him to Messi.  And no i didn't manipulate that list, i got it off elpais.es.  I first checked AS, but they didn't include an assist category this year on their statistics section.  I guess they have him on 4 assists and they didn't include him in that section.  But even on 4 assists or 5 my point still stands.

That's the thing though, i wasn't "defending" Messi.  I saw the goal/assist stats someone posted for Cristiano and I was impressed by the goals  but the assists didn't seem that high, so it got me wondering how many assists Messi (probably the only comparable player to Cristiano in terms of output) had for 2010 (since the last 60 games was probably harder to find).  I did a quick search and found nothing in terms of assists so i decided to check this season's Liga stats and saw Messi had 10 already in 18 games and posted that instead, also making the point that it's probably the clearest way to differentiate both players since in terms of goals they're pretty much even.
