I was part of the club scene where fashion was everything. It was about how well you dressed and the music went with it hand in hand. Think Madonna in 'Desperately Seeking Susan" or 'New Jack City'. Then came the whole UK rave/dance music culture and it went to warehouses and people didn't give a shit about each others looks. It wasn't about looking like a particular thing, it was about being whatever you wanted to be. Unfortunately, this was superseded by door bitches who judged you on how you dressed and whether you'd look good enough to fit the feel of the super-club. It was like the more skin, the shittier the music.
Its always only ever been about the music/dancing for me right back to my Northern Soul days. On the dance floor all night couldn't care less about anything else.
I knew girls in the 80s who spent all day getting ready to go out then stood like statues preening themselves all night. Fuck that.
Going to my first rave and seeing everybody dancing was my kind of place. Never looked back.
We've not been to a club for years now. Age and how they've changed stopped us but we have decks and a cellar as our own club so we put on our own parties.
