Alonso has actually improved since going to Madrid, especially defensively. He is their most defensive midfielder now, and tackles a lot. Doesn't attack as much as he used to at Liverpool though.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/KmldYvqoiDY?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;rel=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/KmldYvqoiDY?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;rel=0</a>

I wonder if he likes Mourinho. He has too much class to like Mourinho's methods, IMO. I cannot hate him even if he plays for Real Madrid.

True. He doesn't have speed or tackling skills to do his defensive job as clean as for example Masch does.

If he signs a new deal, pretty much rules out any move to us ever happening. Sad, really.
Don't worry. I'm sure we'll still have threads about this until the day he retires.

Xabi Alonso - I'm still a Liverpool fan
« Reply #2926 on: February 16, 2013, 04:49:59 pm »
Former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso says he is still a fan of the club despite leaving Anfield in 2009.

Alonso moved to Spanish side Real Madrid for Ł30m four years ago but says he still feels "really attached" to the Merseyside club.

The Spaniard also reveals that the summer before his move the club told him he was not as "important" to their plans as he thought he was.

Video Interview here;

Don't underestimate the influence of Real Madrid or the 50% tax rule in Xabi's decision to leave.

I love Xabi. I think in the last season he showed everybody that he was important for us. I'm sure the plans to sell him were shelved and if he really wanted to stay he could have - it was in his hands. But he left...sigh.

Why? He is a Basque, not the closest ties with Madrid, in fact generations of whom would consider themselves separate to the Spanish, certainly not as closely tied to it, particularly Franco's city & club.

Isn't his contract up in the summer? Would make too much sense for us to try and get him back. Could have the kind of effect Pirlo had with Juventus. Brendan talked about getting characters. Xabi would be that. La Liga/World Cup/Euro winner, he'd get our entire midfield some backbone.

Don't think the owners would pay big wages and a transfer fee of any size. So it would only happen if compromises were made by all parties.

I think a slight difference was that Alonso was an established footballer with a track record of imposing himself on games.

The summer that he was told to find another club was the summer he should have been told that he was to be vice-captain to Gerrard and a dominant figure in the club's next 5 years.

Aye, but just because you're born in the Basque region, doesn't automatically mean you're anti Spain, and given Alonso was a Spanish international, it seems that there was no such issue.

Didn't he live in Barcelona for a while, when he was younger, or have I made that up?

He wasn't told to find another club though was he? He still played regularly in the first team and he still had the managers confidence. He CHOSE to leave - nobody forced him out and he wasnt going to be left to rot in the reserves if he chose to stay so if he loved it so much at Liverpool he could have dug his heels in and said he wasn't leaving. He could have shown the same attitude Henderson has and decided to fight for his place at the club.
