Liverpool FC exclusive: Rafa Benitez rejects new contract
Jan 16 2009 Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

Rafa Benitez 320

RAFA Benitez has rejected the contract offered to him by Liverpool Football Club.

The Spaniard insists he will only agree to the new deal if given more control over football matters - rather than having to answer to a club chief executive.

Benitez, who insists money is not an issue, has informed American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett of his stand.

Today he said: “"The owners feel that the manager's decisions need to be subject to the chief executive.

“But I know that I am subject to results and to our fans and they are the best judges I will ever have.”

Full story in today's Liverpool Echo.

Fuck, here we go again.

I love Rafa and his bollocks (does that sound wrong?) for standing up to those pricks.

But I wouldn't want this to turn into us ultimately losing him.

No point doing a half-arsed job, whilst knobbled behind the scenes.
Just got to hope that the owners see sense and give him these terms.

I would rather secure Rafa than win the title this year.

Goodbye & thank you Rafa. You've given us more than we ever had a right to expect from you and you stayed loyal and fought for us even when some of our own turned on you. I truly hope that you find somewhere with the support that you deserve & win everything in sight.

This is terrible news.

Awful for the team's stability.
Look how bad Everton's form was before Moyes sorted his contract, and look how they turned it around once it was sorted.

This could be the end for Benitez too.
He didn't hang around at Valencia when faced with similar problems, and there's already been a near fatal amount of shit in the press between him and G+H.

Fucking terrible.

exactly people moan that it would give Rafa 'too much' power at the club but no ones worry that an idiot like parry has the power at the moment

Fuck. I can't and don't blame rafa. The idea of Parry getting involved in the transfers was a fucking joke to begin with.

Not many teams in Europe can say that they have a manager who genuinely cares about the club and the fans and we are one of the fortunate few who can.....

I think we need to get vocal on this on Monday. If we were to lose rafa it would set the club back years again.

Can't agree with you on this.  I'd rather secure the title this season because i can't read into the the future and don't know how good a chance we'd have of winn8ing the title in any future season.

I support Rafa and believe he is in a strong position to negotiate the contract that he wants, but he knows that his position remains as strong as it is while his team produces the results that it has this season

Hmm, I don't really see the problem here. I agree Rafa should have more control (although the Barry saga this summer was one exception where I'm glad he didn't get his own way), but what bothers me more is for the sake of further peace, why not just give him the contract he wants?

1. Both fuckers are not going to be around much longer whatever the financial climate, the clock is ticking on the July-whatever deadline for the loans, with almost certainly no chance for new investment or restructuring again. So why do they care?

2. Hicks wants Parry out. So by giving Rafa more control and removing a function of the role of Chief Executive, isn't this weakening Parry's position? Unless Gillett is blocking this demand which may well be the case.

What a fucking mess........again :no

I cant blame him for knockin it back, especially if it means we've got Parry the dealing with our transfers, we'd have two or three very decent players at are club such as Alves, Simao if it wasn't for rick the prick fucking the transfers up.

Co-Co need fuckin off big time and Raffa's making a stand, fair play to him.

This is about basic corporate governance. He should not be involved in any monetary negotiations with players. The business also requires clear checks and balances and seperation of responsibilities.

If Rafa goes there are some serious implications.

1. Who replaces him and at what cost, new backroom staff etc.

2. Which of Rafa's players will follow and clear off, Torres, Javier, Pepe??

I despair. David Moores you have done much good for this club but the day you sold to G&H may go down in history as the day our club moved in a way that it will never ever fully recover from.
Fernando Torres, Liverpool's no. 9. His armband proved he was a red, Torres, Torres, you'll never walk alone it said, Torres, Torres, we bought the lad from sunny Spain, he gets the ball and scores again, Fernando Torres, Liverpool's no. 9.

Your talking shite. If your fishing your doing it in the wrong thread because everyone is going to jump down your throat.

Rafa should be the one in control of transfers. He should be able to go two the muppets and say how much money can i have to buy players. How much money can i give out on contract wages etc etc.
Get the answer and then do the negotiation himself because he knows his piramitors and if he can't land that player then he can talk to his second choice.

You are simply wrong. I am a manager in a different industry to football but if we recruit I get involved with remuneration discussions and I think this is all Rafa wants. As I understand at the moment he has no involvement once he has told Parry who he wants bringing in so if Rick and the Yanks think the price the selling club want is too high the deal is ditched. Sure, have someone working alongside Rafa to finalise everything once its agreed but that is not even close to how it works now.
