Can anyone tell me how to ensure that when I refresh the page in Chrome it keeps me at the point I was rather than going back to the top of the page?
Ta.

I just refreshed this and it stayed where it was supposed to be.

You all must be bad idiots if you're FF is crashing or is slow.

Every other program I use works absolutely fine, including Chrome. So I'm inclined to think it's a problem with Firefox.

to those who use the mac version;

Have you tried out http://glimmerblocker.org? It blocs ads.

Unfortunately, it also circumvents Little Snitch, because OS X uses a system-wide proxy rather than application-level settings. If you don't want your software phoning home, you'll have to add the relevant URLs to Glimmerblocker's blacklist.

Tried the first release of Chrome and it was a dog.  Hated it.  Been running Opera 10 since Alpha and while the initial release had many issues, 10.52 which I'm on now is fantastically fast on Win7.  Might give the latest Chrome a go because I've heard it's even quicker.

Pros and Cons of each, links to manufacturer and download; Size and operating systems supported;
A very well informed discussion follows after the review, where users point out some practical issues with each.

A lot of users appear to use one browser normally, but with another in reserve for particularas an option.

It places Firefox (for add-ons) and Iron (for privacy) on 4.5;
Opera, Safari and Chrome on 4.0;

It also looks at a few options I hadn't been aware of:
Kmeleon on 3.5 (slimmed down cousin of Firefox, optimized for Windows);
Avant and Maxathon (shells for adding features to Internet Explorer) on 3.0.

Happily using CHrome - made me very lazy with the excellent address/search bar.
Also have IE8 for backup; for all those sites not supported by Chrome (not many - some banks and all that). Also some pdf files don't open in chrome; so the backup comes in handy.

pdf open in chrome, make sure you got your extensions downloaded and also you can display IE compatible pages in chrome by using the IE extension

I'd been using Safari since 2003, but was increasingly pissed of with how much memory it hogged, and how every upgrade broke extensions. Won't be going back to Safari unless Apple radically overhaul it.

Experienced a few times when pages hang on load and get a "kill" or "wait" window. Generally Chrome's been very fast, with much better memory management, I keep it open for days without any problems.

In most cases it means a vulnerability has been identified with the application rather than the OS (Apple and Linux users are smug enough to look after themselves ;)).  The vulnerability either has/hasn't been patched by the manufacturer.  So these offers a measure of the vulnerability of the application, and whether or not the vendor has responded to fix reported vulnerabilities.

This is the most recent reported for Firefox 3.6.x, in this case updating to the latest version of Firefox 3.6.x is required.  That's been patched to fix the vulnerability:
Quote
Description
A vulnerability has been reported in Mozilla Firefox, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system.  The vulnerability is caused due to a use-after-free error when moving DOM nodes between documents and can be exploited via a specially crafted web page.  Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code.

Solution
Update to version 3.6.3.

Provided and/or discovered by
Nils of MWR InfoSecurity, reported via ZDI

Monitoring software and updating isn't always something users always want to do. Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) can monitor which applications need updating/patching and link directly to the necessary updates.

A less critical vulnerability in Apple Safari 4.x (on Windows), still unpatched:
Quote
Apple Safari Stylesheet Redirection Information Disclosure
Secunia Advisory    SA37931
Release Date    2010-01-22
Last Update    2010-03-16
Criticality level   Less critical
Impact    Exposure of sensitive information
Where    From remote
Solution Status    Unpatched
Software:      Apple Safari 4.x
Description
Cesar Cerrudo has discovered a vulnerability in Apple Safari, which can be exploited by malicious people to disclose potentially sensitive information.

The vulnerability is caused due to the application following redirects for stylesheets and allowing to read the target URL. This can be exploited on sites that use redirects to URLs containing potentially sensitive information e.g. within the query string.

This is related to vulnerability #8 in: SA28758

NOTE: This does not affect redirects to URLs using HTTPS.

The vulnerability is confirmed in version 4.0.4 and 4.0.5 on Windows. Other versions may also be affected.

Solution: Do not browse untrusted sites while accessing other sites with potentially sensitive information in the URL.

I think your best bet is to use Mozilla Prism to make a site-specific browser for any sensitive sites.

I use them for all webmail, shopping and banking sites I use regularly, and if I want to buy something somewhere else, I start another browser with just that site (e.g. I normally use WebKit, but open Chrome to shop etc.).

You can make SSBs with Safari, too, but I don't recommend it, as all Safari instances use the same cookie store. To my mind, that defeats the purpose of an SSB.

I hadn't seen that before.  It looks very cool, and useful.  I suppose the advantage is vulnerabilities may be contained...like ones that use a tab to gather data from others?

I didn't realise Chrome (and SRWare Iron) can do something similar using the page menu (select 'Create application shortcuts...').  They don't appear to use the same cookie store, I could log onto a site and duplicate or vary settings between browser and SSB.

Prism as a separate application (rather than FF plug-in) looks like it takes that a step further.

I'll give it a whirl.

Adds ... installation wasn't as I expected.  It seems to have associtated *.webapps to MDC (Prism), but no direct access to the standalone Prism application (desktop shortcut, a folder under program files, or even add/remove programs).  I think I'll system restore back to yesterday.

I'll system restore.

Is it possible to sort the different file types you download through chrome?

In FF you could put your files in a default folder, but for instance torrent files to a separate folder. Is that possible in chrome?

I tried using it, I just don't like it.  I prefer having the bookmarks where they are on Firefox. I also love the Gmail manager in the bottom right that works better than chrome, and I haven't noticed it be slow or buggy.

Maybe I'm in the minority.

Nope, I'm sticking with FF. Tried Chrome but didn't like that I couldn't customise it to the levels you can with FF.
I might have single handedly ruined Warrington's picture houses,but personally thought my pocket money was better spent at Anfield.

I think Prism creates a wrapper application that is more like a locked-down profile than a full application. It would be daft to have 20 copies of Firefox on your system.

The basic idea of an SSB is that you run each site as a separate application with separate sessions. That means that you're not vulnerable to any kind of cross-site scripting attacks, because you're not logged in anywhere else in that browser.

Google Chrome does a great job of protecting your OS from the Internet, but it doesn't do a good job protecting your web pages from one another.

Im back using Firefox and cant believe how much faster it is. :D  Chrome would just freeze and take forever waiting for a page to load it was so frustrating! where as now Firefox only takes  a second.
Chrome also caused adobe flash to eat up the cpu to 100% then my pc would just shut itself down!  Since using Firefox ive not had a problem with flash and the cpu runs at a nice steady low pace.
I am going to uninstall google chrome tomorrow and hope i can get rid of that horrible google updater that come with it.

hmm, the sort of person who would install google updates likely has a virus riddled machine, give it a month and firefox will be slow again

Late reply: If it's the same as SRWare Iron (which is built on the Chromium engine), See the 'Under the Bonnet' tab among the Options.  There's Downloads, and 'Download location' is set there, with a tick-box to 'ask every time'.

As I said, Chrome may differ slightly from Iron, but probably not much more than the description.
