Also just a shameless plug for a new punk/ska/etc festival that my mate has organised for the first time this year. It's cheap as hell and should be awesome:

I'm interested Enemy - only found this thread thanks to your posts there and those line ups look good!  You know that's not the real Loonies you have playing in Nottingham though right?!  The dream team of Popkids, Tax, Wild Johnny and Chris is sadly no more and Chris is just flogging a dead horse around - I guess they'll be alright but not a patch on the band that stuck Mad Frank's Zonal Disco together which is a real shame.

I really enjoyed Two Sick Monkeys when we played with them a few years back and Last Under The Sun are a great band and really nice blokes to boot!  Seems Like you'll have a cracking weekend, hope it's as good as it looks.  If my experiences of Punx Picnics are anything to go by you'll not remember anything but a lingering apply taste in your mouth and laughing a lot!

I had the misfortune of seeing the Descendents on Monday night.  15 or so years of waiting and it was the worst gig I've been to, ever.  And I've seen 311!

Maybe not the originals but Chris is a lovely guy and they're great fun to watch. A lot of bands these days only have one original member or so (Dogs, Discharge, Varukers) etc. but they're still awesome. S'good to move on.

What band was it you were in? Should be a good'un, we've been earmarked a spot camping behind the pub and gonna take our distro down so we can hopefully sell some records/patches/whatever and have a good laugh. Sadly I don't get too munted cos I'm the responsible driver type these days, plus I usually end up helping out with merch or door or whatever. I have a feeling the Nottm Picnic will be awesome but quite a panic to sort out because at the mo I seem to be full steam ahead organising it and everyone else has buggered off on tour or on holiday! Fuck! Should be all good though. Just finalised all the flyers today and printed a bunch off to take to Burton.

Been seeing a lot of hype about the Descendants recently but have no inclination to see em live. I hate it when bands are great on records too and then sound shit live. I went to see Cider from Ohio on their brief UK tour earlier this year and they were pants live, I was well gutted.

I have recently rediscovered the Replacements, after finally deciding to get them on CD, after getting rid of the tapes years ago. I am glad I did so.

Any good albums you'd recomend? I've heard some of their stuff and I love 'Alex Chilton, though that's partly because I like Big Star.

Sadly, he's not the bloke he appears to be but that's really not important so there's no point going into it!  I once went to see AC/DC at Milton Keynes Bowl on the Friday and then spent the Saturday night in some squat venue in Nottingham with the Loonies which was the sublime to the ridiculous but a great weekend none the less!  We had to break into this sort of leisure centre place and then somehow get a gig together with one lamp to light the whole building and the worst PA known to man.  Is Disorder's singer a bloke called Taff?  If so, they played, got absolutely hammered beforehand and Taff (it was definitely someone called Taff, whether it's Disorder I don't know?!) just collapsed on, and started smashing up, the drum kit and had to be thrown out when he got angry at people protecting the kit.  Like I say, sublime to the ridiculous!

On the subject of Disorder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Fjdl5k6weo

In terms of the bands I'm in; there's a couple neither of which you would have heard of I can guarantee you mate!  We have a lot of fun though and have got to play all over Europe and with some brilliant bands which was always my aim at the start.  Years ago we played with Samiam and they were one of the top three nicest bands we've ever played with - you've never seen drinking like it either; they had a rider that included loads of booze such as an optic sized bottle of Jack Daniels that disappeared within maybe 90 minutes maximum, I was gobsmacked and impressed in equal measures.  The only other band I've seen come close to drinking like that and still being able to put on a show would be Viking Skull.

Descendents-wise; I love them.  I waited near on two decades to see them and they played two songs before the singer had a huge, Axl Rose style strop and stormed off.  I was absolutely gutted.

Hope the weekend was good.

Meh I don't know him through and through so I can't comment, everyone's got demons though especially in this punk scene, haha. As for Taff yeah he's a bit of a waster but there you go, I'm good friends with the drummer from Disorder who is a genuinely lovely, lovely guy so I'm a bit biased of course. Never heard about that drum kit incident though, will have to ask for more details from the drummer.

Weekend was good, highlights were Poundaflesh, Certified and Total Bloody Chaos. I love a good screaming front woman. Met Tam from sacrilege while I was there and got chatting to her, my fella is gonna try and bend her ear about doing guest vocals with a new band he's in with Rat from Varukers/Discharge. Would be awesome if that happened.

Hmm well, great UK bands at the moment who I've seen recently are Agnosy, Bullet Ridden, Poundaflesh, Certified, Only Fumes & Corpses, Bomb Blast Men (now disbanded but I saw them last week), Murder of Crows, Cry Havoc, Afternoon Gentlemen, Harry Callahan, Go fast or go home.

Best foreign bands I've seen recently are Human Compost (way intense, raw, fast French hardcore), Appalachian Terror Unit (not new but they're currently in the UK - yay!), Unhaim, Chickens Call, Atentado.

That should keep you busy for a minute or two. I'd prefer to go farther afield (Finland, Japan etc.) in recommendations but let me know if the above are horrible to you, haha.

Should be going to Rebellion with Varukers. Not booked a B&B or anything yet though, oops!

Well, I should be giving a shameless push to some great mates of mine. Anyone here a fan of Insurrection back in the day? they were about in '88 and released a self titled album on peaceville. It's crust/hardcore punk really. They've recently reformed and played a few gigs, latest one was for The Mob's anniversary gig in bristol (if anyone went).

You can have a listen here:

Bad religion are a cracking band I reckon. And Snuff are beyond awesome. Had the chance to catch them supporting the bosstones many moons ago, along with consumed and it's still one of the best gigs i've ever seen.

most of it overrated - Sex Pistols one of the worst bands of  all time

other "Punk" bands - Clash, superb, but not punk
Ruts - very good, maybe could be classed as punk, but did quite a lot of reggae
Stranglers - excellent, but not punk
The Damned - very good, probably punk

How do you define "punk" music ? more of an attitude and as dress code than a genre of music in my opinion

That's like saying rock music is defined by Greenday, Coldplay, Nickelback and Linkin Park. Total tosh and uninformed. If you cite Sex Pistols and the Clash as your complete founding of what punk is then you kind of miss the mark and just stay within the populist compounds that Malcolm Dickhead McLaren would have you believe. Contrary to popular opinion punk didn't start or end with the Sex Pistols.

May as well tell me Indie is defined by Jack Johnson or some shit.

There's a few from down here...

The Damerels are a three piece who do a sort of psychobilly thing minus a bass guitar - their EP is worth the £2 or whatever it is on itunes:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/KhxiPsmbxXU?fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/KhxiPsmbxXU?fs=1</a>

Bangers are excellent, their album is cracking and only £8 too (bit Hot Water Music-esque I guess):

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/NPpPQZPlCYE?fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/NPpPQZPlCYE?fs=1</a>

The Bedroom Project are a great live band - I think they lose something on record and it may be a little screamo for your tastes mate but you won't meet a nicer bunch of lads!

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/oFRnBHdgYkY?fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/oFRnBHdgYkY?fs=1</a>

Crazy Arm are a good, hobo-punk (?!) band who are worth checking out too:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/8xxtxWzNQmk?fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/8xxtxWzNQmk?fs=1</a>

Enjoy!

I actually agree with you, what i am saying is that, in my opinion punk is not a genre, more an attitude and style. Indie never was a genre, but a reference to bands on independent labels, at some point marketing people tried to make it a genre.

Enjoy!

Cheers mate. You were right about the bedroom project, that's not to say they're shite though. The other 3 have my interest tough. Will hunt some of it down. Worth a few quid I reckon! Bangers remind of a local band called 'stomach' from years ago. Well defunct now.

@Enemy, gonna look for more of 'Chicken Calls'. You have any in your distro?

I have a split 7 they did with Power is Poison. They're coming on a UK tour soon though and I might put em on in Nottingham mid-June time and if they have any new records I think I'll get a few copies. :)

Couldn't agree more.  For me, punk is my naive view of Socialism in musical form - don't try and fuck anyone over, stay true to what you believe in whilst being honest and enjoy the fact that people like your songs, your gigs or whatever and don't try and milk it at the expense of others.  There are some bands who are classed as punk who are as close to being punk as an X Factor winner generally is and then there are some bands who essentially play pop music but who are more punk than I'll ever be or have ever tried to be.  For that reason, I don't personally buy this whole 'punk is dead' mantra I often hear.

I have a mate who had Radio One crawling all over him to release a song he wrote when he was 14 and to edit another song he's just released so they could get him on their B play list - he'd have made a fair whack of cash, got some big publicity and could have had his 15 minutes.  He hated the first song as it was miles from where he is now (six or seven years older) and he wasn't prepared to alter a song he'd nourished and loved for so long and so told them so.  He wasn't interested in the money or fame or kissing Scott Mills' or whoever's arse in order to get them, he just wants to play his songs and make his films - if people like them, great and if they don't, oh well.  That is a billion times more punk to me than a stadium tour selling £15 t shirts with backing musicians who aren't allowed to be seen on stage and yet the first guy is classed as pop and the band I've pointed to are held up as a punk band by most.

Disasterous! I'll have a look see when they come over in a couple of weeks and grab one for you (and the distro) if they have some and let you know. :)

We have some CD's in the distro but I just don't have any passion for them, I don't actively look for or buy them even though some people prefer them. I can get excited about vinyl and the sleeves and stuff, CD's leave me cold.

Get back to you soon matey.  :wave

most of it overrated - Sex Pistols one of the worst bands of  all time

other "Punk" bands - Clash, superb, but not punk
Ruts - very good, maybe could be classed as punk, but did quite a lot of reggae
Stranglers - excellent, but not punk
The Damned - very good, probably punk

How do you define "punk" music ? more of an attitude and as dress code than a genre of music in my opinion

'The Damned, very good, probably punk'. That was just the icing. You've totally misinterpreted punk, wilfilly probably, but it never had a dress code. You really need to start again.

Oh and

the Clash being a garage band. Just to help confuse you.

Cheers Enemy! The shame of not being a vinyl head! ;D It was tapes and then CD's for me by the time I started buying music. Never thought otherwise then. I still do get a buzz out of holding the CD 'finished article' though.

WE HAVE TAPES TOOOo!1

Bet you have no tape deck anymore. :D I don't see the value of tapes so much myself - they wear out and then the music is gone, gone, gone. :( We're planning on doing a few tape releases soon though, there's a guy in Notts who is a whizz at churning out tapes and such so we've got 2 or 3 in the pipeline at the mo. So exciting!

Honestly, I just don't know where to start with the above statements. How to get it so wrong on so many levels.
