Houllier on the Transfer Market
« on: July 28, 2001, 03:48:00 pm »
Just been reading Geds comments in the Daily Manc this morning about the current state of the Transfer Market. Basically he say's its spiralling out of control with Liverpool finding it increasingly tougher to match Man Utd's spending power. He Believes with the likes of the Zidane transfer to Madrid, after the World Cup in Korea and Japan, it will continue the trend upwards.  The one comment i did like though was how if not spending millions in the transfer market would they compete with the Mancs, et al, according to him by buying hungry young players ie Baros Risse etc and by getting a good togetherness in the squad, a good atmosphere. For all the talk of the chequebook at Old Trafford its being their youth policy that has been the backbone of their success of the last 10 years and not the big money signings which make the headlines. Hopefully Houllier will be proved right in the long run and we'll all reap the benefits.

Its a well known fact that the backbone of a successful team is the heart of a homegrown talent. We have six or seven regular England internationals (spit) and first team players who are all from Liverpool or thereabout.

Scum have been so successful because of their local boys, as have we. We dont need to spend vast amounts of cash, and that is one of the things Le Boss is the master of. I quote Hyypia, Macca and Litmanen as examples.

So when you hear the press (and some of our "supporters" - misho) harping on about how much money scum have spent and therefore they are better than us, just sit back in the smug satisfaciton of knowing we still have £30-odd million in the transfer kitty.

GH is right. Prices are insane!
Just a remark; "the Mancs spending is close to what it costs to build a new stadium..." (hmmm around 50M, a hint that we are staying???!)

Now, you tell me, buying ZZ from Juventus (some 40M) or signing Pep Guardiola from Barca, who's on a free. Which is the best business?
Big business is not the same as success (just ask Inter Milan)  ::). Big money = big risk. I just wonder which will be the first team to go bankrupt. It won't be us.

Well, god damn!

£50 million. Enough to build a new stadium.

"Liverpool to announce in two weeks whether they are to build a new stadium".

Makes you think doesn't it?!
