Got my bluray today :)  Wanted to get films i don't own on DVD first so have started the collection with Hurt Locker, Bourne Triology, Monster Inc and Casino Royale (ok i own this one but i couldnt find anything else in the 2 for 25 deal in hmv :P).  Was soooo tempted to get Band Of Brothers though.

I've never noticed it on dvd but on Blu-ray you can see every blemish on the actor's faces. Every minute blackhead and pimple scar.

Also, when you watch Lord of the Rings on Blu-Ray it makes it obvious when the green screen has been used. Its masked away on DVD due to lower res,

You seen Saving Private Ryan yet? If not defo worth a bash. Great film, made even better on Blu-ray.

It's not on Blu-Ray yet is it? Even in the US?

Also, when you watch Lord of the Rings on Blu-Ray...

How so, it's not out yet?
 ???

Watched District 9 yesterday, superb. The effects stand up superbly. And the Bluray extra's are fantastic.

Probably on about HD rips from HD DVDs.

I know there are HD versions of LOTR trilogy knocking about as I had them. 1080p and 720p I think.

Blu ray refers to a storage medium...ie the disk. If you're talking about trying to burn a film ripped from a Blu Ray disk onto a standard DVD, you may be struggling to fit the HD content onto a DVD, as the capacity of the disk is considerably less than that of a BR-D

I read in a technology mag the other day that they are bringing out Goodfellas on blu-ray again in the New Year. So they fuck up the first release, sell millions to the disappointed masses and then bring out another properly... and the thing is, I just fucking know I'll buy it too.

I didn't think the exisiting one was that bad that it looked like a botched job?

But yes. I'll buy it again; it's probably my favourite film. Certainly my most-watched, think it's 19 times now.

Really disappointed in the supremacy conversion. Looks like they just ran a sharpen render over most of the scenes. Can't decide if it's because there was a lot of depth of field shots though. Ultimatum next, anyone got an opinion on the bluray version of Collateral?

I always think animation looks stunning in DVD format. I can't even begin to image how better blu-ray would be.

I'm not sure if I would notice the difference between normal DVD or Blue ray quality.
Is it really so much better, or is it a bit of clever marketing ?
Also quite clever to come up with that in the download era, the files are really big.
I saw Spiderman on the bay, it was a 7.24 GB download.

It's incredible. An amazingly cynical and blackhearted script, fantastic performances, one of the best 'twists' in history. My Dad is a massive Alec Guiness fan and made sure I saw it (and The Ladykillers) early on.

Moving into a new flat next month and this is will be taking pride of place.

I just looked on Amazon, because I was wondering it it wasn't out yet.

Here you go. The price is a bit much.

This is the US version, which seems better, but not in the UK yet.

Well, if they are bringing out a new one, they clearly feel they made a bit of a mess of it. Wouldn't say it was a botched job- visibly better than the doovde- but still a disappointment.

I read a review earlier which seeemd to be saying that the packaging has been upgraded, but that the film itself is still the same standard.

For this 20th Anniversary Edition of 'Goodfellas', Warner Home Video re-releases the same exact 25GB Blu-ray disc from the first year of the format's launch. The only difference is that they've repackaged Martin Scorsese's seminal crime drama in a highly attractive Two-Disc DigiBook, which includes a 32-page collection of short essays, color pictures, and bios on cast and director. While the first disc contains the film and supplements, the second disc comes with a documentary and a small collection of cartoons...

Side-to-side comparisons reveal no discernible difference between this new edition and the two previous releases on Blu-ray and HD DVD. In fact, it appears to be the exact same disc. This probably wouldn't be such a bad thing if it weren't for the fact that after thousands of hours of HD viewing, this 1080p/VC-1 encode (1.85:1) simply doesn't come close to some of the best catalog titles available. Unless Warner is willing to fork out the money for a serious restoration of the original film print, I doubt this modern classic will ever look any better than this.

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/2782/goodfellas_20th.html

Which is annoying, to put it mildly, if true.
