Very sad news. I liked the guy.
Saw him at Wembley in 1986 watching his mate play for Everton and he took the stick he got from Liverpool fans in good spirits.

Agree with this. Gives one a stronger insight into mortality when you’ve known of a person for most of your life.

Thorne was a good commentator and effective communicator. He talked you through shot selection really well, which helped to enjoy the sport.

He was a flawed, vulnerable bloke but will be missed.

there was an excellent feature done by the beeb around 1999 where he explained break building

he claimed in practice to have done in the region of 200 maximums. so he did one for the camera there and then

footage was edited though and to be fair the beeb straight after admitted he missed one or two and they re shot it

but it was great how he went through it all and he made it sound easy

RIP 'Mr Maximum'...  8)

I had the pleasure of meeting Willie several times over the years (i played local league for years)
Once, when he did an exhibition night at my club, he was so funny, our crowd loved him.. he hit a red 3 times across the table to pop it ..
Quick as a flash he said.. 'Only Treble im allowed to play now'  ;D ;D .. (he did have betting probs at the time).. really nice guy.

Thanks Willie.. Form is temporary but Class is permanent 8)

RIP Willie.

I can still see that blue somehow not going in against Steve Davis. I also remember him getting a 143 at the Crucible, I think it was in '82. That was the first year I started watching it properly. At the time that seemed like a huge break. Willie did make it look easy though.

Have moved this from the thread I created.

Some tasty 1st round ties, standout being the 2 fastest players on the circuit, Ronnie vs Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.  Depends which Ronnie turns up, he may be under less pressure with only a limited crowd at the Crucible.  But Un-Nooh is the highest ranked qualifier.  Trump has a difficult start vs Tom Ford & like the look of John Higgins vs Matthew Stevens & Neil Robertson vs Liang Wenbo.

Think it's going to be wide open, given the exceptional circumstances with coronavirus etc, having the World Championship in August.  The bottom half of the draw is brutal, 6 previous winners, 2 finalists in the 8 seeds & the likes of Liang Wenbo & Un-Nooh from the qualifiers.

Draw is:

Trump 10-8 vs Ford

Yan Bingtao 10-7 vs Slessor

Maguire vs Gould 3-10

Wilson W/O vs Hamilton

Higgins 10-5 vs Stevens

Gilbert vs Maflin 8-10

Lisowski vs McGill 9-10

Allen vs Clarke 8-10

Williams 10-5 vs McManus

Bingham 10-7 vs Carty

Ding Junhui 10-9 vs King

O'Sullivan 10-1 vs Un-Nooh

Selby 10-6 vs Brown

Murphy vs Saengkham 4-10

Hawkins 10-2 vs Ursenbacher

Robertson 10-5 vs Liang Wenbo

Five qualifiers through now, Saengkham, Maflin, McGill, Clarke & Gould.
