Was the best sketch show, no doubts about that. Thought it peaked with series 2, and got out a bit too late.

Some of its genius was that it got you to care about the characters

The Ted and Ralph one was pretty moving when Teds wife died and the other situations around it

And the Old Fella in the chair - usually pretty funny - except one episode where he talked about a girl he'd met that had died - and he ends up staring at the camera with complete silence. Then says in a quiet, normal, sad voice.

"I'm afraid I was very drunk"

Very moving that sketch

On a serious note, the piece that always stick in my mind about the show is when Ron Manager is sitting in a small empty football stadium reminiscing about how great it is to tune in to football on a saturday afternoon. It was done in all seriousness, and gave me goose bumps, because I remeber how it used to be, tuning into the bbc on a saturday afternoon. Will never forget the way he ends it - "Father's and sons in the terraces, mums at home making the tea. Ahh. Everything's alright with the world - saturday afternoon is football"

Yes, I think its time to go home now Johnny.

The best sketch was one where Mark Williams played the ukelele (ala George Formby) and then did songs with swear words in.  I've only ever seen it the once when it was first on.
I'm still trying to find this sketch...

Art, that was 'Fred Halibut And His Little Banjolele' who first appeared in the Arthur Atkinson radio sketch in series 2 episode 3, very hard to find because they were Prince songs he used to do and Prince has become very protective of his work/image recently and has threatened to sue fansites that even have pictures of him on them, let alone feature his music or lyrics.
Those parts seem to have been edited out on youtube and other sites unfortunately.

I'd love to see it again too!

Ah is that it what it was, I just have the vague recollection of him singing "cream" and a couple of others and then right at the end he sings "Sexy motherfu.....".  Funny as hell.

Spot on. ;D He did 'Cream', 'Sexy MF', 'Get Off' and 'Darling Nicky'.

Williams did the Formby gag on the Alexei Sayle 'Stuff' show before too, see here:

Has there ever been a funnier sketch show?

Genius and ended at the right time

Also - have you seen the DVD of the stage show?

Here is a taster;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFwpjT_qw8o&mode=related&search=

Sorry Andy, i'm responding 4 years later after your OP.

I saw the stage show. It was part of a touring double bill with Vic and Bob's Shooting Stars.

The latter was ok but not suited to the larger stage, whereas the Fast Show was brilliantly suited to it. The rapid sketches, character changes, rapid fire gags and audience participation with the much anticipated catch phrases made it feel like panto for adults.

Are you ok?

Yes, thanks for asking. I went looking for the Drunk Family, watched it and realised it wasn't half as funny as I thought it was, and then thought of that guy and that bit in particular. Always struck me as a very brave thing to do, after the non stop gagging of the character's normal exploits.

I've always thought this show was massively over rated.

By definition these kind of shows are always 'hit and miss' to some degree, basically if don't find a character funny then you won't enjoy those sketches.I did however find Simon Day's characters and sketches the most consistently funny...probably because (if memory serves) his were the least quotable.
