Went to a yankees game last time around and kind of enjoyed it in a bizarre way.

planning a trip in january now and can watch the knicks and/or islanders at home (seems to be plenty of tickets at stub hub).

The islanders-arena - is that a trek from manhatten ?

Recommendations - knicks or islanders ?
It’s not even about individuality, it’s about the team. Our game was based on his controlling of the tempo. Squeeze the life out of the opposition and then strike. That is our game. Like a pack of pythons.

Watch the Rangers instead of the Islanders, they play in Madison Square Garden also

That was the first pick, but they're not at home during our visit.

Maybe a Devil game at the new arena in Newark then. Long Island can be a pain in the arse to get to from Manhattan.

Yea, the Coliseum is a pain in the arse to get to without a car since it's not by any rail stations.

definitly newark (but i'm also a devils fan).  it takes about 25/30 minutes from 33rd street, 20 minutes from penn station and 15 from world trade center.  you can also get tickets for dirt cheap in a state of the art arena

I went to New York around 9 years ago as part of an extended US trip, it's ok, I wouldn't fancy living there, too much concrete slabs I think. I preferred places like Boston, slower and relaxed place.
There's this fantastic dumplings restaurant Joe's Shanghai, it is quite famous.

I went to New York in summer 2004. Whilst there at least half a dozen members of the AC Milan team of the time passed me on the street. They had crossed a busy road before I recognised one of them as Paolo Maldini. They were there for some friendly tournament in Queens wherein they beat the mancs.

I went to New York last month and I can truly say it's one of the best places I've ever been to. I guess everyone has different tastes but I personally loved the vibe and the diversity of the city. Although I agree with one of the previous posters when she said that Boston is more relaxed etc. but there are places in New York with a more relaxed atmosphere and vibe such as West Village and of course Central Park. I've also been to San Francisco which in comparison is much more chilled and perhaps more friendlier but for me New York just has so much more character with so much more to do. The food is phenomenal with so much variety to choose from. I'm in danger of sounding like a woman now... but shopping is also amazing over there...and that it's so much cheaper compared to London!!

I don't know, maybe i would have a different take to it if i was living there but for a holiday i thoroughly recommend it.

Trying to book our flights now but its gonna cost £380 each to fly direct from manchester
the cheaper alternative is to go from manchester via munich or heathrow

Got to be honest mate £380 is not bad in all fairness, though I've flown through Amsterdam to the states from Manchester and it was no problem.

Depends how much money your saving going the non-direct route (also worth checking the airline out)

Knicks v Nets, thats the 'derby' isn't it? Be class that - although I think both teams are shite

It's a good all round experience, we had a laugh and basically done some Liverpool FC type chanting (we were pissed). The yanks were all made up with us, "Hey dudes, where are ya'll from" etc.

We only went to see what MSG was like, but ended up getting right into the game. The Knicks had a player called Harrington would was like their Gerrard, carried them all the way.

Ha-ring-ton! Ha-ring-ton!

The vantage point from the Park looking down Broadway from 59th Street is a good view, but it'll be cold, so be sure to take fortification.

I stood there for the millennium.  We got there ay 9pm, that was the closest we could get to times Square.  the upside is that they have a firework display in the park so hang around once that glitter ball has dropped.  and yes, it can be quite foooking cold.

Just be aware that the New York Road Runners Club has a 4 mile race that goes around Central Park starting at midnight.  They have a fancy dress parade at 11pm before the race.  It's not overly crowded, but you might have issues crossing some of the roads in the park.

It's a blast to run, if you're so inclined.

Bit cold for a shag, so it’ll have to be a mugging  :P

Yeah I’ve heard about the road race, not my scene :D
Didn’t know about the fancy dress parade. We’ve booked a table in Mickey Mantles for around 7 for food and a few beers. Will be taking a hip flask of Whisky to warm us up in the park

would've invited you to McCormacks to meet El Campeador.

Do you know Barry McCormack the owner? My dad knows him and used to play football with him years ago when he still lived in Ireland.

I spent a summer in New York in 2005 on a J1. I didn't wanna leave but I also didn't wanna stay illegally.

I lived in Woodlawn in the Bronx and I worked in an Irish bar (Slainte) on Bowery, opposite CBGB's. talk about two complete opposite ends of the city. Although travelling wasn't too bad with the subway.

Really wish I was still there and it's one regret I'll always have in life.

Good place that, would recommend it. Got some bargains and easy to get to on that bus from near Penn Station (Port Authority or whatever it's called). I was most amused by the security people cruising around on segways :), was dying at ask them for a go.
