Liverpool stormed to the top of their Champions League group with the victory and Thompson added: "That was a get well card for Gerard Houllier. He will be very, very proud and pleased with the players after that."
With Houllier recovering in hospital from major surgery, his team became the first British side to win a European game in Kiev, going one better than Manchester United, who only drew there last season.
Kiev's veteran coach Valerii Lobanovskyi saw his team go out of the competition, but said: "I congratulate Liverpool, they are a very good professional side and I wish them every success for the rest of the tournament."
