I know the following are on the flight and have been selected to the squad by Benitez,

Stephen Darby, Danny Guthrie, Lee Peltier, Miki Roque, Godwin Antwi, i don't know about the rest of the squad though.

At a guess i will go for this team, whether the likes of Gerrard travel will be another story.

Here is my guess

                             Dudek

Peltier          Agger       Paletta         Darby

Pennant      Gerrard     Alonso        El Zhar

                   Crouch        Fowler

Am not saying this is the team, but thats what I will go for.

why risk stevie and xabi  when it is a nothing game i personally think ggive the younger lads experience and let the likes of stevie and xabi etc. just have light training and massages and relax and so on so they are in good shape for the weekend

Could be wrong but didn't RB say that Anderson was also going to be in the squad?

Totally agree. Absolutely nothing at stake for either side in this game, the group has been finalised. I wouldn't even let any of next week's starting line up travel.

Yes he did say it´s a possibility.

"Yes. We will use different players. We are qualified so it's a game we can try to enjoy, though it's clear we want to win. We want to try to play nice football. We have an idea about some of the players. I've talked with Gary Ablett and it's clear that maybe Paul Anderson, Peltier and Guthrie will go. We need to check about the others. Some young players will go and some new players will get an opportunity."

Yeah Anderson is in the squad, they were all told this morning in training.

I don't think we have the central midfield cover, and plus Gerrard has asked to go.

If we play even one of our important players in this game Rafa wants shooting.

Whether Gerrard wants a game or not he should be told that his focus is on Fulham.

Whether we win in Turkey or not makes no difference whatsoever apart from a few quid so as we're not Newcastle why take even a small risk especially when we are so short in midfield.

My team

Dudek
Peltier, Paletta, Antwi, Darby or Smith or Threlfall
Pennant (needs game time), Guthrie, Roque, Hamill
      Garcia (needs games), Fowler

Anderson for Pennant
Lindfield for Garcia
and bring Rafa on for a run in centre mid for last 10.

We should not take any chances whatsoever and it'll be interesting to see the young boys show us what they're capable of.

linfield for Craig Douglas Bellamy,
anderson for hammil

i'd go with:

dudek - obviously

peltier - have to leave finnan at home to rest
agger - could use the european experience
paletta - good experience for him, carr/hyppia need a rest
riise - need some experience in the back 4, also hasn't played as many games with his injuries (would have been warnock or aurelio injuries permitting)

pennant - just might find some form
alonso - need some senior player in the middle
guthrie - give gerrard a rest
el zhar - lack of other options, good experience for him

bellamy - hasn't played much, hopefully now bang in form and gets another goal
fowler - crouch and kuyt need a rest

bench - reina, antwi, darby, garcia, anderson, gerrard, crouch.

overall, need to rest key players, but a team full of kids could be exposed a bit too much, probably wouldn't help their confidence  :)

A win is good for confidence and morale. That youth side you've selected would get absolutely slaughtered by a Galatasaray side who would be vastly more experienced and pretty formidable at home. There's no point blooding youth players if all you're going to do is send them out like lambs for the slaughter. They aren't going to learn anything.

On the other hand, with a depleted midfield there's no point playing your two most needed (and arguably most experienced) players - Gerrard and Alonso - in a meaningless game. Did Momo's injury against Brum teach you nothing ??

If any of the regular back 5, Gerrard, Alonso, Kuyt and Bellamy play on Tuesday I will be mighty annoyed !!!!

I think we have to take into consideration that we can only register a certain amount of players to play in the champions league, thats why you might see Gerrard and Alonso there.

Yeah and unless I'm missing something, if we field a team of kids and get humped 3-0 and PSV win 3-0, they top the group.

Would be suprised if we dont play a 3-5-2 again

Maybe.....

                        Dudek
      Palletta     Hyypia    Agger
Peltier                                   Roque
             Gerrard      Guthrie

                      Anderson
             Bellamy           Fowler

a mixture of 1st teamers and reserves, Carra, Riise, Alonso, Kuyt, Finnan, Reina all get a nice well earned rest.

Gerrard clearly does not want a rest and is so athletic he does not need 1.

I seriously hope Rafa doesn't take this game lightly as some people here are. We may be through but an away victory will be good for confidence and send a good message to the other teams in the knock out stages. We don't wanna go there and get slaughtered. Its Istanbul the place where we conquered Europe and want to mark our return with a victory. Hopefully some of the seniors like Gerrard, Alonso, Riise and Carra will start this one mixed with guys who need match time, Fowler, Bellamy, Pennant, Paletta etc.
If he retires I'll eat my fucking cock.

Great anti climax for those expecting jizzihno....

Benitez has said that Anderson, Guthrie and Peltier will be included in the squad.
Since Lindfield, Hammill, Darby and Roque were were recently registered in the squad with UEFA, we can guess that they'll be involved too.
That plus those who are fit and were involved in 25/05/05 make a 16-man squad by my reckoning.

So unless Rafa's registered a youngster without intending to take him to Istanbul (doesn't make sense), or he plans to leave someone who played in Istanbul at home (would be cruel since the game counts for nothing), that leaves just 1 space.
Lindfield is the only striker in the 16, so strikers are needed.
Crouch was fully rested yesterday, which suggests that he will play, and I reckon the game should also be used to give Robbie some action.

That means Paletta, Agger, Pennant, Bellamy and Kuyt all miss out.
Some would argue that Paletta should be used, but that would be at the expense of another youngster, a player who played in Istanbul, Robbie (who needs games as much as Paletta), or Crouch (who was rested yesterday and will therefore be going).

Anyway I've no idea how to pick a possible team.
Darby can play anywhere across the back 4, but is surely unlikely to start?
Peltier has only featured at right-back, but actually favours centre-mid I believe.
Roque's a natural centre-back, but played full-back for the youth team in last year's FA youth cup, and Rafa seems to prefer to use youngsters in wide positions where they are perhaps under less pressure.

Anyway, I hope to see as many youngsters playing for as long as possible.

its a nothing game so lets give the yougsters a chance namely Guthrie,Paletta,Anderson,Hammill think Pennant should play aswel as he needs games! Would imagine that Peltier will start and maybe Roque will feature at some point!

anyone who thinks we should take any of the senior players, especially gerrard or alonso, is clearly insane. let them sit at home, with their feet up. we have a ridiculous schedule coming up in a few weeks and they will need all the rest they can get

it's a nothing game, completely meaningless.

and how often do we get the chance to give some talented kids the chance to prove themselves on a big stage like this?

it's the perfect opportunity to see if the likes of anderson, hamill, etc, have what it takes. i can't wait.

and i'm sure gala will play a severly weakend team also.

For those who played in Istanbul, it's a chance to go back to the scene of possibly the greatest night of their careers.
Let them sit with their feet up on the plane, and then sit with their feet up on the bench.
But let them go.

and i'm sure gala will play a severly weakend team also.

anyone who thinks we should take any of the senior players, especially gerrard or alonso, is clearly insane. let them sit at home, with their feet up. we have a ridiculous schedule coming up in a few weeks and they will need all the rest they can get

it's a nothing game, completely meaningless.

And speaking from a rather pessimistic point of view ... we got off rather lightly with the 3 injuries we got against PSV at home (in another, arguably, equally meaningless game).

We may not be so fortunate on Tuesday.

I don't particlurly like the idea of swapping keepers around much, but for this game it'd be great to see Jerzy play.
