So I got this great idea to rent one of my favourite movies, Stand By Me, so I could watch it with my kid, who is ten. Eventually ended up buying it off Amazon, only to find that it's got a 15 cert. I looked up imdb (which has detailed parental stuff) and got this:
Sex & Nudity
Suggested MPAA Rating:R for Violence,Language and Smoking-All Involving Teens
Infrequent references. (ex: "Why don't you go home and f**k your mother some more?")
4 twelve year old boys are seen in their wet underwear.
Violence & Gore
The face of a dead boy's body is seen. His eyes are open and he has some blood on his face.
A young man has a word carved into his skin with a razor-blade, some blood is seen. This is voluntary however, so there is no violence during the scene.
An older boy bullies a younger boy by pushing him to the ground, getting on top of him and then he puts a lit cigarette close to the kid's eye: threatening to put it in.
A gang threatens young boys with a knife.
A boy unexpectedly blows a hole in a trash can (he thinks his friend is playing a prank).
A boy is threatened with a gun.
Profanity
11 f-words.
Other milder language, like shit, asshole, ect.
Most language is used as an insult.
Shit is used quite frequently.
Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking
In a few scenes, 12 year old boys smoke cigarettes.
Other scenes of smoking.
Some older teens drink and drive several times.
Frightening/Intense Scenes
The body of a dead boy may be frightening to younger viewers and the whole film revolves around them trying to find the body, so some children might imagine a horribly deformed body until the body is found.
Four boys are covered in leeches. One boy has one in his underwear and he faints.
Two young boys on a railroad bridge are chased by a train. This scene is very intense.
There are some very threatening scenes between the boys and an older gang.
A group of pre-teen boys stay in the bush one night and they all take turns of keeping watch with a gun, strange and scary noises are heard that they think are ghosts or wolves.
An intense stand-off scene with characters threatening each other with a knife and gun.
A scene in which a young boy is spying on two older boys may be intense as there is a risk that he might be spotted.
Any views?
