Movies for your kids
« on: October 10, 2006, 03:37:06 pm »
An attempt at a new thread for the more aged Rawkite, specifically parents.

There are some top class movies out there for kids these days. Back in my day, kids were only just beginning to be a target market. Now, movie makers have realised the money potential of smallies in a big way, so that these days you are absolutely nobody as an actor if you haven't done at least one CGI blockbuster.

I'm presuming you all know the latest classics, but for anyone catching up, here are some of the very best of the last few years, all still worth renting/buying/watching.

Shrek/Shrek 2

Extremely funny, well written and unusual in that the sequel is even better than the original. Also quite touching and a nice message. Suitable for all over, say, three of four.

Spiderman/Spiderman 2

Again, an instant classic. Well acted, great screenplay, brilliant effects, and the sequel is as good as the first, if not better. Not really suitable for smallies, say under fives, 'cos it's a bit scary.

The Incredibles

Fantastic animation, excellent script, very funny for adults and kids. One of the best movies of the last five years, bar none. Also, watch out for "Boundin' " , a short film on the DVD which is a little gem. Suitable for all except the very small, again a little bit scary in parts.

There's a few to be going on with. More recently, me and the boy went to see Hoodwinked, a very modern retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood classic, in which Granny, Little Red, the Wolf and the Woodcutter all get taken in for questioning and give their separate versions of events. The Times thought it was a little too clever, the Observer said it was hilarious. I'm with the Observer, I laughed my arse off and possibly enjoyed it more than the boy.

Any contributions, lash away.

Star Wars I/II/III/IV/V/VI

Can't beat these, my lad loves them. Only downside is the endless lightsabre battles you have to have afterwards.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Both of these are great films, funny with some scary bits in as well.

Young kids don't really have the patience for a full movie. Shows like Dora, Diego and the Little Einsteins are much more suitable.

In movies, the Pixar family are a given. Ditto Shrek and Ice Age. I actually took my niece to see Open Season yesterday, and that's a movie that rocks too.

In other news, check out the movies of Hayao Miyazaki. These four work for kids of all ages:

Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke
Castle In The Sky
Howl's Moving Castle

Ice Age - You'll love it as much as the kids.

Belleville Rendez Vous - Beautifully animated French modern-day masterpiece.

Same comment as for Wizard of Oz. Don't underestimate how upsetting these can be for smaller kids. Like when Bambi's mum dies?

That's probably a topic for another day, actually. I personally think kids like being scared, but we are all a bit more careful about such things these days...

My 4 year old loves Monsters Inc (as El Sargento said earlier - "brilliant")

He knows when the scary bits are and if no one is in the room - he pauses it and comes and gets me or Mrs. nyctex.  As soon as it passes he tells us to leave.  That could happen 3 or 4 times in the movie.

Right now he also loves the original Wonka movie

Oh, and I forgot the utterly brilliant Wallace and Gromit. I find the best is the collection of three short ones, Grand Day Out, A Close Shave and The Wrong Trousers.

They are only about 30 minutes each so the smallies don't lose interest, and they're only a little bit scary (the penguin in Wrong Trousers is a menacing bastard) so suitable for all but the very small.

Some good ones already listed. Don't forget some of the older Disney classics, despite the animation being dated in comparison think the younger kids still love them. My four year old niece loves The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under. Peter Pan is another favourite. I'm currently regretting getting her the Mike Myers 'Cat in The Hat' but she likes it/is scared by it in equal measure.  I'd forgotten how dark Watership Down is, maybe not suitable for younger children. Also the new 'Lion Witch and Wardrobe' has a (great) relatively hardcore fight sequence in it.
Well, I don't know what it is, but there's definitely something going on upstairs

CGI animation, sort of Animal Farm coming of age story. 8, 6 and 5 year old loved it, some great "live" music, some sort of scary coyotes, but overall, good fun.

me and my girl were not keen... It takes a while to get into.

Polar Express is a movie designed for 3D format. I didn't think it translated particularly well to the 'normal' format.

It is still regularly shown at the 3D cinema in Manchester (don't know what it is called sorry) and apprently it is a much differant and much more magical experience for the little uns and the big uns!

Actually, one of the terrestrials had Home Alone on over the weekend (the original, not any of the sequels).

I had forgotten what a very good movie it is, really heartwarming, funny and excellent Christmas fare. My wife wanted to put on the Bing Crosby Christmas afterwards!

Kids love it too, it's got that mix of excitement (house to myself, yippee!) and fear (desertion etc) that they like.

Couple for older kids.

The Harry Potter films ;D

I love them meself, cos I'm a big kid, probably not suitable for kids under 8, cos they do have some 'scary' bits.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey

Daft as fuck :D

Transformers The Movie

I saw this when it first came out, and cried my leg off when Prime died, still watch it now though and it brings back loads of memories, it's also good, which is nice. (I think it's on offer in Music Zone for about £5 for the DVD, had the original series DVDs going cheap too ;) ).

The Rocky films.

I loved these as a kid, apart from the one with Mr. T cos I loved The A-Team and this confused me somewhat, got taken to see it and I cheered on Mr. T all the way through the big fight scene and according to my Mum and Dad had the rest of the audience pissing themselves. God knows how old I was, but I don't remember it.

Flight of the Navigator

Another one I fucking loved as a kid, was utterly amazing on the pictures back then, but I'm sure it'll look shite and really dated to kids now.

Neverending Story

First one is class, others are a bit ropey.

Labyrinth

Can't believe none of yas have mentioned this, shame on all of you.

Little Monsters

Now, I loved this movie, anyone else remember it? It was about monsters that came out from under your bed in the night and played loads of pranks and stuff, Fred Savage was in it, and it was great. Older one's who liked Monsters Inc might like it.

Drop Dead Fred :D

I don't think I need to say anything.

I'm sure I'll think of some more later :D

Two choices that I was about to suggest myself, nice one :D  Also have to agree with that earlier suggestion of The Incredibles.  There's as much in there for adults as for kids, and I think that helps to make a great kids' film anyway.  Oh, and one from my childhood that the kids still like now is Pete's Dragon.  Nowhere near as sophisticated as the likes of Shrek, but it still holds some charm.
When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece.   (John Ruskin - English critic, essayist, & reformer (1819 - 1900) )
