Liverpool Echo - Moment of truth - Sep 28 2006 THE long running saga over Liverpool FC’s plans to build a new stadium today appeared to be drawing to a close.
The club have managed to convince Objective One chiefs that they do indeed have the money in place to proceed with the exciting project and have thus been awarded a £9m European grant.
Ever since proposals were first revealed there has been speculation – and sometimes even a great deal of doubt – about whether the club could secure the necessary finance to turn its dreams into reality.
During this time, Liverpool have done what all good businesses should do – kept their cards close to their chest and not allowed themselves to become embroiled in conjecture.
Behind the scenes, chief executive Rick Parry and chairman David Moores have worked tirelessly to put together the sort of funding package which will kick-start the whole project.
Today it has become clear that they have successfully navigated this stage of the procedure and now it is to be hoped that progress will be swift so that Liverpool FC can continue to flourish on the pitch and the Anfield area in which it is based can finally be regenerated.
Hopefully today’s good news will give everyone involved a much clearer vision of the club’s direction.
Critics may claim it has been a long time coming but such large scale business ventures rarely happen quickly and anyone who believed this one would buck that trend was missing the point of what a tricky proposition this particular venture is.
A new stadium would be wonderful for the club, the fans and the city as a whole.
Now the challenge is to finally make it happen.
The ball is well and truly in Liverpool FC’s court now and the hopes of all their fans and every single resident of Anfield now rests with them.
