Bumping an old thread, but it's relevant.

I have been learning how to do cryptic crosswords lately, with the help of minute cryptic on instagram (he is really good)

Just noticed they do a webpage daily crossword too - https://www.minutecryptic.com/

Anyone into their crosswords/cryptics?

Love em.

Broke me PB last week - Times cryptic completed in 5:09.

Me favourite is the Listener Crossword though.

Have completed 4 in my life. Usually give up after reading the preamble. The setters must be bleeding geniuses. The feeling of accomplishment when you manage to finish one is boss.

Iíve had a few published in the Independent. Just plain cryptics - none of that Listener nonsense, Iím not that clever. (Iíd post a link but the online Indy archive only goes back a month and my last one was published four months ago.)

Hereís one of my clues:

United no longer tried to fool ref when picking up yellow card at the start (8 )

They vary a lot. Each puzzle comes with specific instructions.

Advanced puzzles like the Listener can be extremely clever and inventive, and very rewarding if you can crack them, but I find them too time-consuming to solve and sometimes can't even make sense of the instructions, so I tend to stick to the standard daily cryptics, which typically take me 20-30 minutes.

How the flippin' heck?

There are usually two ways to solve it in a cryptic clue. The straight definition or the tricky wordplay.

United no longer = divorced (straight definition)

tried to fool ref = dived

when picking up = add some more letters to dived

yellow = or (old word for gold)

card at the start = c

So, add or + c to dived = divorced

Gegs (2 words, 9 letters and 4 letters) hint - itís nothing to do with fingering 😀

I'm not so keen on this type of clue and the oftentimes one - they're clever and funny but more like dingbats than cryptic crossword clues. There's no definition and the clue taken at face value is nonsense - for me, the best clues are the ones that have a plausible surface reading but mislead you with the words being used in unexpected ways. To pick a famous example from the Guardian's Bunthorne:

Saw dog wearing lead (7)

Spoiler
Solution is PROVERB

"Saw" is the definition

ROVER is the dog

and it is "wearing" PB, the chemical symbol for lead
[close]

Quote
A bar of soap? (2 words, both 6 letters)

An old favourite. That one is famously by Rufus of the Guardian. He was a master of this kind of whimsical cryptic definition.

A few more of his classics:

A jammed cylinder? (5,4)

Out of sight, out of mind (5,3,4)

Chopstick? (6)

Spoiler
Solutions are:
SWISS ROLL - whimsical definition, ie a cylinder with jam in it
ROUND THE BEND - two meanings
CLEAVE - separate chopstick into two parts, "chop" and "stick" to get two synonyms for cleave
