From a blue living in Seville
« on: September 6, 2005, 01:42:46 pm »
For anyone going to the Betis game away from home.

Just to say chaps, avoid the monstrosity that is next to the Cathedral, they charge more than nightclubs do for a bevvy.

This is where I do most of my drinking, it's not part of a chain, is well priced and the atmosphere's sound.

Was a good craic when the Celtic lads were over, and would like to see how long I can last in an Everton top with you lot there  ;)

Are you close to the Plaza de Armas Hotel? I stayed there last month and passed another Irish bar on the way back from the centre.  Is it on a corner?

And I take it you mean Flahertys as the  one near the Giralda?

Looks a good place to aim for.........

Hope this is not a set up and there will 2,000 Ultra Betis fans in there when we arrive..........hahaha

Lets trust a bluenose for a change -

Might see you there

Yep I've checked on a map and it looks close to where I'm staying. Going over on Saturday- hope my tickets arrive in time- so will give it the once over incognito ;)

The pub is right next to the Plaza de Armas hotel aye, on a corner although I live further into the centre.
It's just my watering hole, and generally have a good laugh there when people come to Seville for footy, so hoping that a few reds will turn up there.

Chances are I'll be there on Saturday at some point, maybe watching whatever footy's on in the afternoon, so listen out for a scouser moaning about his team losing to Portsmouth and you'll see me ;)

Wont get in until quite late so you'll probably already be suicidal by the time I get there!

The friendly "bitter" is talking about Flaherty's in the Calle Alemanes...as for the other Irish pub near the Plaza de Armas? Don't know it...

I've probably turned my nose up at him on more than one occasion ;)

Costs 4€ for a pint of Heineken and the so-called "food" they serve is priced out of this world

I shall be taking anyone who is interested to one of the best Cruzcampo bars -  "El Tremendo" - best Cruzcampo on tap in the city (ties with the tiny Bar Jota)

Nothing special about El Tremendo except the beer - lot better than the watered down schite they serve in Flahertys...

El seńor Jon Hall can vouch for me! :)

I can vouch you complained about being hungover the next day, which made up for me probably still being pissed from the day before. Probably something to do with a bottle of gin and a dash of tonic in that last bar EACH!

The Celtic fans had a boycott after visiting one of the Irish bars, touting tickets and ripping them off, the owner has a few around Spain etc and they boycotted them after that.

Have answered you in the message you sent mate.

El tremendo's good if you like cruzcampo, aye, and very cheap and cheerful. Might be an idea to warn them that demand is likely to be up, they always seem to end up running out of beer in the centre of Seville.
Anyway, if any of you are knocking around the merchant when you're over, no doubt you'll spot a couple of everton fans walking out every time they play YNWA.

Patrick or Leopoldo could you give us any brief summary of your perception the different 'identity' of  Seville & Betis fans / clubs ... if any .... I had my own impression wandering around bars a few years ago that the city was pretty randomly divided ... wanted to include  a v. few lines on this in an article ...

Patrick, would be a pleasure, perhaps during a derby.
Have one red mate here, from Manchester of all places, but seem to meet more blues (my main partner in crime out here is also a toffee from over the water). Merchant's a sound bar for watching footy but tend not to spend too much time there when it gets later so that we can wreak havoc on the sevillanos and sevillanas.

Nige, I'd say it's pretty evenly divided but according to what people tell me the betis fans are from the poorer areas tranditionally and the surrounding towns and villages. Apparently Seville FC were a favourite of Franco's although that may just be nonsense, but they do seem to attrack more 'pijos'. Never really know how to explain that word, but just think people with pink lacoste jumpers draped over their shoulder and tonnes of gel on slicked back hair and you'll get the idea.

The fans seem to behave themselves unless they play each other.

There were about a dozen in during the afternoon on matchday but most seemed to be at Flaherty's next to the cathedral.

Watched the 2nd half of the manc game in there last night. It was pretty full with loads of Spaniards (obviously) a few scousers and ex pats etc. Atmosphere was good.

Went back to the ground yesterday and had a walk round inside (got pics and a video on me phone) and the place is a bit of a dump at the other end. Also managed to get in Seville's ground that was next to our hotel, for a nosy.

On a side note this was a top euro away venue, great city, great people and a great atmosphere. I'll be going back for sure.

Good time was had indeed and moved on to Costa del Sol on Wed-Sat. Enjoyed laughing ath the Mancs there on Wed night!
