Just watching the first episode of his wonderful music talk show, Spectacle. Great style to the show with lots of talk about musical influences. Songs like "Oliver's Army," "(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea" and "High Fidelity" are all great classics. Additionally, his Istanbul article for the Times is hilarious.

Yeah, just watched his first one with Elton John. Not bad at all.

30 Rock as well. His new single is a smoochy ballad. Hope he gets back into slagging off politicians in his songs again soon.

I've been in touch with a guy who was at the gig in  question and actually recorded it - he's promised to send me a copy of his recording, so it will make interesting listening. I'll report back...

Bah. I love the works with the Brodsky Quartet; the Juliet Letters is a superb and innovative album. Nice read otherwise :p

I'm listening to the Norwich concert as I type this - quality isn't the greatest, but it's OK, especially if you're used to listening to bootlegs. It's great when you hear the crowd start to cheer during 'Watching the detectives' when Jerzy saves the last penalty, then Elvis starts up a ragged sounding YNWA. It's funny to listen to it and know what's going on elsewhere.

No, jazz. You fear jazz. You fear the lack of rules, the lack of boundaries. Oh look, it's a fence. But, no, it's soft.

Anybody watch Mark Kidel' documentary, 'Mystery Dance', on Elvis Costello this weekend?  A difficult man to cover in 90 minutes, no doubt, but this was enjoyable and I'd recommend it to fans and newcomers alike:

Terrific documentary. Elvis has done a few in depth interviews of late, which is unusual for him. Not that he's deliberately taciturn (he hosted his own chatshow series with Elton John in the US), just that he has been generally quite a private man.

I've loved his music since I was 8 in '77. Armed Forces, Imperial Bedroom, Blood and Chocolate and particularly King of America were some of my favourite albums through the 80's. I've mentioned elsewhere that I saw him at Liverpool Royal Court in '89 a week or so after Hillsborough and it was an emotional night. Strangely I didn't see him live again until this summer, twice - at the Royal Albert Hall and then Hyde Park. His gigs were high on both hits and energy, amazing performances with the band retaining that new wave beat fervour they had back in the 70's.

He's a top red, identifies Liverpool as his home despite spending a lot of his formative years around London. And that clip of his dad singing If I Had a Hammer, jerking around in his suit and glasses. Like father like son, peas in a pod.

from the arlearse thread...

just watched this...95 mins long as opposed to the 60 min version they showed on Friday night - and its great ........filled in some of the gaps that made Friday's version feel a  bit jumpy...ie, more about his early family life (that footage of his arle fella singing 'if I had a hammer' is priceless!  8)) .....how he gravitated toward Stiff records...and crucially for me, the Bacharach collaboration!  :) ..including footage of him performing a belting and recent version of God Give Me Strength...which is worth heading over to the iplayer for alone..........why the fuck they didnt show the full version on Friday is puzzling?...theres a load of bollocks explanation for it on the BBC4 site...but to be honest I think the real reason is that 'Tramp The Dirt Down' features in the opening sequence - and the cheeses at the beeb have got twitchy rings with anything hinting at political bias at the moment...............anyway that aside it was a well produced and much deserved look at one of the UK's greatest songwriters....now if they follow it up with an in depth look at living legend and Costello cohort - Nick Lowe - I'll happily pay my licence fee twice

I don't know about that, his Philharmonic show last year included near enough all of My aim True, and Hyde Park this year at least half a dozen from This Years Model!

Looking forward to seeing Elvis Costello at the Philharmonic Hall this Friday - a first time for me. Surprised there's not more of a thread about him & his music on here to be honest, given his varied & extensive back-catalogue and his Liverpool connections.

I'm also selling a ticket on for my mate, which is awaiting approval on Twickets - it's an 'open to offers' listing so give me a shout if you're interested/would like the link.

Edit: in fact, it's just been approved... https://www.twickets.live/block/314065189167593,1
