1970s Pub Rock
« on: December 10, 2022, 12:46:41 am »
Over in the dead musicians thread we've had Jet Black and Wilko Johnson recently, just seems appropriate to share the sort of scene these musicians were central to back in the early/mid 1970s. This stuff seems like another world now but the sheer energy of this predominantly London/Essex/Male scene is quite unique. It probably changed music as much as anything else has without getting the recognition of that. If you remember you will understand, if you are too young then this was life in old pubs with no MTV, no sky sports, no phones, no internet, its the days of making your own fun.

Some amazing bands/tunes there BBN. such a vibrant scene that, and whilst I’m sure they would all have welcomed commercial success (and some got it) it didn’t feel as if that was why they were doing it.

Think you could maybe add The Jam to your list. They were certainly lifted by the punk think but definitely fell into the pub rock scene prior to that. They didn’t just pick up instruments overnight. Seasoned pro’s!
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain

^ yea and maybe the Who too?

I first heard the term “pub rock” on here years ago - because of geography and age I just thought the stranglers were punk and Dr Feelgood and Ian Dury novelty acts  like darts, show waddy waddy or the flying pickets  ;D

I love that the bands were very working class and just belted out the tunes. Must have been very exciting to watch back in the day

Probably Australia's greatest 'true' pub band. Played some huge gigs back in the day but are still playing the Sydney Pub circuit without the late great Doc Neeson.

The Angels - Take A Long Line

And all the world is football shaped, It's just for me to kick in space. And I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste.

I think the Who were 10 years before really, that's a sort of 60s things with the Kinks, Stones, Animals etc

As for the Jam, I saw them (as the Jam) they were not really Punk and I sort of see them as being released by the energy rather than being part of it, like Madness and Squeeze I suppose as well (although they did play the Hope and Anchor). Anyway, for some reason Paul Weller irritates me a little bit too much and I've left out people who used costumes.

I'd also say that although the scene was principally London based, Supercharge were definitely a Pub Funk band round here (especially at the Sportsman. I think that's the Wetherspoons in St.Johns now).
