^ yea and maybe the Who too?
I first heard the term “pub rock” on here years ago - because of geography and age I just thought the stranglers were punk and Dr Feelgood and Ian Dury novelty acts like darts, show waddy waddy or the flying pickets
I love that the bands were very working class and just belted out the tunes. Must have been very exciting to watch back in the day
I think the Who were 10 years before really, that's a sort of 60s things with the Kinks, Stones, Animals etc
As for the Jam, I saw them (as the Jam) they were not really Punk and I sort of see them as being released by the energy rather than being part of it, like Madness and Squeeze I suppose as well (although they did play the Hope and Anchor). Anyway, for some reason Paul Weller irritates me a little bit too much and I've left out people who used costumes.
I'd also say that although the scene was principally London based, Supercharge were definitely a Pub Funk band round here (especially at the Sportsman. I think that's the Wetherspoons in St.Johns now).
