My dog ate my write up
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Damn you all for making me do this  ;D

Lastrador's Baklava

Borislav MIKHAILOV:

Notorious wig wearer Mikhailov is Bulgaria’s best and most successful ever goalkeeper. Mostly known for his exploits at the 1994 World Cup, where he captained Bulgaria to a surprising fourth place, playing a crucial role with some brilliants saves throughout the tournament, especially in the penalty shootout against Mexico (saving two pens).
He is Bulgaria second most capped player ever and their most capped captain, which goes to show what a massive character he was, playing in three World Cups and one Euro. Besides playing in his native Bulgaria, he also played in Portugal, France and England. He was named Bulgaria player of the year in 1986.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/QtMcxvJObr0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/QtMcxvJObr0</a>

A very solid goalkeeper, with great fundamentals, good reflexes and a massive personality. A credit to wig wearers all over the world.

Sokratis PAPASTHOPOULOS

Not coming from the strongest of seasons (not entirely his fault), Sokratis still is without a doubt one of Greece best defenders ever. After years playing with Genoa, Milan and Werder Bremen he was signed by his majesty Jurgen Klopp in 2013, and he would established himself as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga in his 5 years tenure with Dortmund. He has also represented his national side in the 2012 Euro and the 2014 World Cup, advancing from the group stages in both opportunities and being one of standout performers in the latter.

Jurgen Klopp on Sokratis: "You’re never quite sure if he’s about to kill you"

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/1QAksNeaw7Q" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/1QAksNeaw7Q</a>

A leader on the pitch, Sokratis is a quick, strong and aggressive defender, who is both strong in the air and in the tackle. He’s an ideal option for my back three were his athletic capability and aggressive style complements his defensive partners perfectly.

Miroslav ĐUKIC

One of La Liga’s best defenders of the 90’s and early 00’s, Djukic was the heart of Super Depor’s defense. He played for Deportivo la Coruña for seven years and would later join Valencia, where he would play for six more years and help them reach two CL finals and win one Liga in 2002. All in all he played 368 games for two of the best team in Spain and won six major titles. He also earned 48 caps for Yugoslavia.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/vh-8Hq1S8Nw" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/vh-8Hq1S8Nw</a>

Played mostly as a sweeper, Djukic was a classy, elegant and highly intelligent defender who was also strong and fearless on the challenge. He will be the rock of my defense and will help me build from the back with his excellent technique.

Cristian CHIVU

One of Romania most decorated players ever, and along with Popescu and Belodedici one of the best defenders to ever come from that country. Starting in his native country he would then play for Ajax and AS Roma for eight years, establishing himself as one of the most exciting and versatile defenders in Europe, before arriving to Inter. There he would play for seven years and win everything there is to win. Throughout his career he would struggle with injuries, some freaky ones like the time he broke his skull which left him with a massive scar and playing with a rugby cap, but he still managed to play 468 games and was first choice every time he was available. His honors include 4 league titles (3 scudettos and 1 Eredivise), 3 Coppas Italia, 1 CL and 1 Club World Cup. He was three times Romanian players of the year, two times Ajax player of the year and was included in the Uefa team of the year in 2002 and he earned 75 caps for his national team.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/zXW-r2j4QJs&amp;t=60s" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/zXW-r2j4QJs&amp;t=60s</a>

Contrary to what the Wikipedia page says, Chivu played mostly as a center back, although he would play a lot as a defensive left back with Inter. Like Djukic, Chivu was a technically exquisite defender, great passer of the ball and a very good free kicker. He was very intelligent tactically, versatile and fast with and without the ball. He’s a player capable of defending in the box and in wide areas, and left footed, so he is perfect for playing in a back three.

Srečko KATANEC

Slovenia’s finest midfielder and probably best player ever. At 1.90, Katanec was a dominating figure as a defensive midfielder or as a defender. Mostly known for his time at Sampdoria where he would win one European Cup Winners Cup, one Seria A and one Coppa Italia. He would also help his team reach a European Cups final in 1992. He was also a key part of that exciting Yugoslavia side of the middle 80’s and early 90’s. He amassed 35 caps for Yugoslavia and 5 with Slovenia.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/JXC41Zl9XRE" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/JXC41Zl9XRE</a>   <a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/XiSsb0HlTOg&amp;t=35s" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/XiSsb0HlTOg&amp;t=35s</a>

He wasn’t a fast or agile player but he dominated with strength, intelligence and aerial prowess. He had very good technique and also was a good goal scorer for a defensive midfielder, mostly from his powerful headers. He will anchor my midfield and help the defense with his defensive skills and aerial domination.

Emre CAN

Not much point in making a long introduction here. He’s been a permanent fixture for some of Europe best sides since his early 20's, which says a lot about his prodigal talent. Unfortunately for him, he decided that Juventus would provide a better platform for his talents and a better chance at winning titles, and in doing so missed the opportunity of lifting number 6. Hard luck Emre lad, hard luck.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/cZeFJlAOXm8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/cZeFJlAOXm8</a>

Emre Can is a physical specimen of the highest caliber. Tall, strong as an Ox and very fast when he gets going. He’s also technically gifted, a robust tackler and a very good ball carrier. He will help Katanec dominate the midfield with his physicality and help the side by carrying the ball forward whenever he can, Emre Can.

Danijel PRANJIC

Mostly known as Croatia first choice left back in the 00’s and for his time at Bayern. Pranjic was a highly versatile player who could play as a leftback, wingback, winger and even at midfield. He earned 58 caps for Croatia.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/aBudAFsfLGM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/aBudAFsfLGM</a>

Offensively very talented. He was a fast, durable and skilful player who had a very good delivery and a knack for scoring goals, he scored 21 goals in one season in Herenveen. He wasn’t a great defender though and he was physically weak. So his role in my side will be primarily offensive, providing the wide on left side and supporting Vucinic who will cut inside. He will support the defense whenever he can though, so no slacking here Dani boy.

Zvonimir BOBAN

Quite simple one of the most talented and overall best players to ever come from the Balkans, but most importantly one of my favorite players ever. A key player for A.C. Milan for close to a decade, he helped them win four Serie A’s and a Champions League in 1994. A proud Croatian, he represented his national team 49 times and captained the side to a heroic third place in the 1998 World Cup.

Zvonimir Boban after he kicked a policeman: "Here I was, a public face prepared to risk his life, career, and everything that fame could have brought, all because of one ideal, one cause; the Croatian cause"

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/NnrLuAzUPMs" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/NnrLuAzUPMs</a>

Also: "fuck the Police"

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/kGFLcTMdvnQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/kGFLcTMdvnQ</a>      <a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/5WTf2q-0iQY&amp;t=502s" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/5WTf2q-0iQY&amp;t=502s</a>

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/1NqYehg1lPY" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/1NqYehg1lPY</a>

An elegant, technically marvelous player who was a remarkable dribbler, an extraordinaire passer of the ball with outstanding vision and also had a mean shot on him. He also provided the bite that very few if any players of his talent ever had. A true leader on the pitch that lead by example. He was tactically very smart and never shy away from of his defensive responsibilities. At 1,85 cm, he was physically strong and could run for days. He wasn’t a great goal scorer but he could be very dangerous from outside the box or in free kicks. He will be the heartbeat and orchestrator of my team, and will provide my forwards with quality passing and help my other midfielders to dominate the center of the pitch.

Mirko VUCINIC

One of Montenegro most talented players ever. He played almost his entire career in Italy. First in Lecce, then in Roma (2 Coppas Italias) and finally in Juventus where he would win 3 scudettos. He managed to score 127 goals in 416 games in Italy. He’s been named Montenegro player of the year seven times. He was capped 45 times for his national team, scoring 17 goals.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/OZcFmdlfJNY" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/OZcFmdlfJNY</a>      <a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/8nhyDf-YqCQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/8nhyDf-YqCQ</a>

A quick, skilful and technically excellent forward, he could play on both wings, centrally or even as a second striker. He was an excellent finisher and an even greater passer, with superb vision. He was tall and strong but wasn’t the most hardworking player. Still his offensive production and talent highly compensates for that, and having so many workhorse on my team makes his lack of work rate not a problem. He will start on the left and cut inside, where he can provide his quality passing, skill and shooting.

Adrian MUTU

The most controversial name on my team. The mercurial Romanian, is one of the most talented players to ever come from his country. While mostly known for sniffing cocaine out of supermodels body parts, his exploits on the football pitch are usually criminally underrated. He wasn’t an inconsistent performer a la Recoba who couldn’t be bothered most of the time. When he was on the pitch he was a consistent performer whose offensive production was amazing. There was a reason why he was always required by big clubs even when his off field problems were so notorious. He played most of career in Italy except for an ill fated and coke filled tenure at Chelsea. In Italy he played for Inter, Verona, Parma, Juventus, Fiorentina and Cessena, scoring an eye popping 125 goals in 316 games. The best period of his career came in Fiorentina, where he was for 3-4 years one of the best players in the league and why not Europe. For Romania, he played 77 times scoring 35 goals.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/_2eowq13ryU" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/_2eowq13ryU</a>       <a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/HQgk8lQeCIg" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/HQgk8lQeCIg</a>

A rapid, talented, smart and dangerous forward who could play both as a winger and as a second striker. He was an excellent dribbler and had a great shot on him. He was able to supply his fellow forwards with some great balls from the wings but wasn’t as talented a passer as Vucinic, so he goes right. He will play provide wide on the right side, where he can use his speed and skill but also get more central where he can use his shooting and get in the box to finish some second balls. He was also excellent with his left foot, so that will help him score from that position.

Edin DZEKO

Quite probably Bosnia and Herzegovina best player ever. Safet Sušić has a good claim as the most talented but in terms of overall production and achievements at club level there’s no one even close to him. One of the best and most consistent goal scores in Europe for over a decade, he first come to prominence when he lead Wolfsburg to a surprising Bundesliga title in 2009, providing 23 goals and 10 assists. He would then continue scoring on a similar rate for the next few years until he signed for City. There he would win two Premiere League titles and an F.A. Cup, being a key part on those titles but not always being first choice. He then would move to Roma where he would flourish once again and help them reach a CL semifinals, where he scored 8 goals in 12 games. His career club goal scoring numbers since joining Wolfsburg in 2007 are 244 goals in 510 games. He’s also Bosnia most capped player ever with 103 games, and has scored 56 goals for them.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/uDdXc2bc28Q" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/uDdXc2bc28Q</a>       <a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/2Q7vILKSttI" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/2Q7vILKSttI</a>

A tall, strong but very mobile striker. His movement on the box is outstanding and he’s an excellent finisher and header of the ball. He’s also an incredible smart and technically gifted player, who provides many assists to his team mates. He will be the focal point of my attack and will also provide great build up with my other forwards and Boban.

Player Profiles

Franjo Glaser

Having an earth shattering penalty record of preventing/saving 73 of 94 penalties faced, he has one of the best penalty save percentages ever. He is a serious contender for All-Time Yugoslavian XI. He was tall and had plenty of agility with reflexes and command of the area, he is one of Yugoslavia's greatest goalkeepers ever and he is one of their greatest players of his era. He is the only Yugoslavian to win his national league, pre and post war.

Not a lot of footage of him, but you can clearly see how good his reflexes were and his command of the area here.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/zVgDgiel-fQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/zVgDgiel-fQ</a>

Darijo Srna

Srna is one of the best Right Backs of his generation in the world. It is very rare to see someone being extremely loyal for a club outside of his home country, but he was with Shakhtar for 15 years. He is the most capped player in the history of Shakhtar Donetsk, one of their biggest legends and he was a legend for Croatia as well. He won 5 League titles, won the UEFA Cup and also captained Croatia. He was Man of the Match in the UEFA Cup Final which they won. He is also the most capped player of all-time for Croatia with 130 caps, it clearly shows his quality and reliability for both club and country over long periods. He represented Croatia in 2 World Cups and 4 Euros. He had plenty of offers from top clubs including Bayern Munich which he declined out of loyalty to Shakhtar. Quite a rare breed indeed! He was rock solid in defense and also delivered tasty crosses when bombing up and down the field. He made the UCL Team of the Season once, and he delivered the Top assists in UCL in another season. He also made the Europa League Team of the Season as well once.

Here is a clip of Srna's crossing and long passing from the right side. He also scored quite a few free-kicks as well.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/G1kcaomgKHc" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/G1kcaomgKHc</a>

Dario Simic

Tall, strong in the air and in duels, he is the hard tackling CB partner in the side. He was also a versatile player, who could play CB, FB and WB positions to a good effect, having the required tactical nous to achieve success in those positions. Having won 100 caps, he was Croatia's mainstay in 6 major tournaments (3 Euros and 3 World Cups). He played for Dinamo Zagreb (his local team) and for the likes of Inter, AC Milan and Monaco. He's crucially known for his contributions to AC Milan with 12 appearances during their Champions League title win in 2003. He also won a Serie A and another CL trophy, and has 5 Croatian National League titles as well. He is also known for his contributions to Croatia's run in World Cup 1998 where they finished 3rd.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/C4eODSW30c8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/C4eODSW30c8</a>

Josip Katalinski

He is regarded as one of the greatest players ever from the Bosnian region. He is a strong contender for the best CB from former Yugoslavian region along with Vasovic and Vidic. He is the more ball-playing CB in the side. He famously helped Yugoslavia achieve World Cup qualification by scoring the only goal of the game against Spain in 1974. He is known to score a number of goals despite being a defender. He won the Yugoslavian League title and also played in France for Nice.

Branko Zebec

He is one of the best players to have ever come from the Balkan region. He was extremely quick and he was strong as well and these qualities allowed him to play any of LW, LWB, LB and he was capable of playing any outfield position with top quality. He also played midfield and central defense at various stages of his career. He shone in World Cups for Yugoslavia and he captained them. He also finished Runner-up once in UEFA Euro Championships. His reading of the game reflected in his managerial skills, he won the Bundesliga twice as manager, once with Bayern Munich and again with Hamburg.

Zlatko Cajkovski

He is one of the best DMs/CMs to have come out of Yugoslavia and is considered one of the best players overall from Yugoslavia as well. He had a great presence in the middle of the park with exceptional marking ability, and he was also a technical player with good passing ability. He won the Yugoslavian League twice for Partizan Belgrade and he also played in German for FC Koln. His understanding of the game is demonstrated by the fact that he won the German League with Koln as a manager, and also won DFB-Pokal trophies as manager of Bayern Munich.

Lorik Cana

Brought up from the PSG academy, Lorik Cana is Albania's best player and has the most caps for Albania, that is 92. He has played in the French, English, Italian and Turkish top flights, and he most notably played for PSG and Marseille. He was a versatile player, capable of playing DM/CM or CB. He was the captain of Marseille and is also known for his leadership skills. Marseille were Ligue 1 Runners-up twice with him being an important player. He also won the Coppa Italia with Lazio. Cana was named Honorary Ambassador of Kosovo and is the Grassroots ambassador for children's football in Albania.

Nicolae Dobrin

One of the greatest Romanian players ever, and one of the greatest playmakers from the Balkan region, Dobrin was an exceptional dribbler and a great creator. His home club has its stadium named after him in memory of the great player. He was such a great representative of Romanian football, as in being among their greatest players, that the Romanian footballer of the Year award has been renamed as the 'Nicolae Dobrin Trophy', and he himself won it three times. In fact, he was the 1st ever winner as well. Real Madrid wanted to sign him, but Romania did not allow him to leave the country.

I knew this player before, but I learnt more about him because of this draft. Wow, Dobrin. This video is a must watch. Football is art. And heavy-metal. Control, counter-pressing, you name it!

Bernard Vukas

Bernard Vukas was voted in 2000 as the greatest Croatian Player of All-Time by Croatian Football Federation and was voted the best Croatian athlete of 20th century. Needless to say that he was one of the best attacking players produced in the Balkan region. He had extraordinary dribbling ability and could play Left Wing or Attacking midfielder, which makes him perfect for the position I have him in, where he can drift wide or come through the middle as he has the freedom to do either. He won 3 Yugoslavian League Titles, and his Hajduk Split team won the league unbeaten, and the record is yet to be broken. Vukas, along with Branko Zebec, Vladimir Beara and Zlatko Cajkovski, played for FIFA's 'Rest of the World' team against England at Wembley (those were 4 of the greatest Yugoslavian players and 3 of them are in my lineup :) ). He played in 2 World Cups and won two Olympic Silver medals. He scored 300 times in his club career and is Hajduk Split's All-Time Top Scorer. He scored 22 goals in 59 games for Yugoslavia, his scoring record is very high for someone who is not a striker.

Georgi Asparuhov

Georgi Asparuhov is considered to be the greatest Bulgarian footballer of all time and is placed 40th on the list of all-time best footballers by FIFA. He was a complete forward with good fnishing, technique and heading ability. He was voted the best Bulgarian footballer of the 20th century, ahead of Hristo Stoichkov. For overseas followers Stoichkov was the hero, but within Bulgaria, the media and fans seemed to hold Asparuhov in the same category, if not higher. He won the Bulgarian League thrice, and also appeared in 3 World Cups. Levski Sofia's stadium is fondly named in his honour as the 'Georgi Asparuhov Stadium'.

Looking at this video, how good is his hold-up play and bringing other attackers into play? Brilliant.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

A genuine great of the modern game, he was one of the Top 3 footballers in the world during his peak. He always had it in him to bring something special, something unpredictable and that got him to stand apart from all the other strikers of his generation. He had everything in his locker, from touch, control, audacity, aerial strength to power and accuracy in his shots. He is currently the third-most decorated active footballer in the world, having won 31 trophies in his career. He is Sweden's All-Time top scorer with 62 goals and has won the Swedish player of the year a record 11 times. He played in 2 World Cups and 4 Euros. He won 4 Serie-A titles with Inter and AC Milan, and 4 Ligue 1 titles with PSG. He made the UEFA Team of the Year 4 times, UEFA Euro Team of the Tournament once, Serie-A Footballer of the Year 3 times and Ligue 1 Player of the Year 3 times. He scored 50 goals in all competitions in 2015-16. He is the only player to score in the UEFA Champions League with six teams: Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, A.C. Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

Crazy player, who was crazy good! He could do things with the football that most others couldn't begin to imagine.

Tactics

It is a balanced 4-2-2-2 of 4 defenders with Full-Backs wandering forward only when necessary, 2 DMs/CMs, 2 AMs who have freedom to drift wide or play through middle and 2 Strikers with the complete set of players able to cover the entire blade of the pitch. Plenty of leaders in the side such as Simic, Srna, Zebec, Cana and Ibrahimovic add to the team's strength.

It's a complementary CB partnership with one hard tackling CB and another ball playing cultured CB. Both FBs were adept at defense, and also had very good running and crossing abilities. The midfield has two players capable of anchoring and circulating the ball. The attacking midfielders were fantastic dribblers and passers, they could cut-in when the FBs overlap and play through balls or they could play crosses themselves. Ibrahimovic and Asparuhov were both forwards who brought others into play, so they could combine to devastating effect. Ibrahimovic, Dobrin and Srna were adept at free-kicks.

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on who is the greatest XI based on everything you have seen, know or have learned in this draft? [Not including players that we selected via parent rule]

Lacatus is in with a shout. All looks good bar the right side of defence. Dan the man is also in with a shout as is a certain Turkish CB.

Vasovic and Sabanadzovic were quality, Vasovic was world class.

How good he was is hard to say given that he never challenged himself outside of turkey, particularly at a time when he could have.

I think you can do well better than that. At least from what I learnt during research. If it's whom you only saw play, then my selection would be worse than yours.

It's a combination of everything ,preference in style of play, personal bias, who I am mostly familiar with,etc..

Was gonna say! Arnautovic should have been in but of course he doesn’t qualify for that all time XI  :duh
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

All-Time XI (Trend)

                           Oblak                                        (Bench: Handovic)

Seitaridis    Vasovic     Popescu    Mihajlovic               (Bench: Stankovic, Kolarov, Manolas)

Modric    Savicevic Stojkovic     Hagi                   (Bench: Boban, Dzajlic, Pjanic)

               Suker        Stoichkov                              (Bench: Dzeko, Zlatan)
