Poll

Things have changed in football.. a lot.. but.. for you which was best?

The olden days when players would do a days work, get on the bus with the fans and have a pint with them afterwards..
The 70s and 80s when you'd watch the players and then they'd be in the alehouses with the team getting bladdered and having a great time
Todays modern athlete that doesn't drink, doesn't smoke and physically is a the top of their game
I'd be happier if the players were even more micromanaged than they are today

Which is best?
« on: September 24, 2015, 08:00:39 pm »
personally I was made up to be in boozers in town and Southport and Formby seeing the Liverpool (and Everton!) greats getting smashed after games.

They'd have a laugh, be friendly and talk to people. They earned a lot -but still ballpark figures that didn't seem unreal..

To me this modern game isn't actually better - if all the players are in tip-top shape then there is no advantage - I'd like to see it back a notch and players back on the ale..

But what do you lot think?

I'm too young to remember the 70's, but yeah, the 80's were great. The days when perms and porn star taches were the norm

I personally despise modern football and the over hyped circus it has become

I honestly ask myself on a regular basis, "why do you even watch this load of bollox anymore?"

The older I get, the closer I feel I'm getting to the day where I'll finally say "nah, fuck this, I've had enough" and just fuck it off completely

I still love playing it mind, and will probably keep playing until my knees give in, but as far as watching it goes, I'm rapidly running out of fucks to give

It's not that easy. I've been trying to give it up for years.

I've jibbed going the game due to finances - I could scrape the money together, but I'd rather spend it on holidays with the wife and kids. I haven't missed going at all, just don't get that "shit I'm not there" feeling anymore. I hardly watch our games any more, other things I'd rather do and I dont watch MOTD at all now. Think its an age thing, 50 next year, 40 years since my first match at Anfield, better things to do now.

Deffo preferred the 70's/80's, felt like it was our sport, now its a greedy obscene bastard of a thing.

As said already above, the late 70's and 80's for me.

Clothes, music and football.

I think, it was probably better as we were winning. That is not to say we are fair weather fans, well most of us anyway, but our demise sort of started around the same time as modern football began. So I suppose it goes hand in hand of remembering the good times.

As for not going? Well I haven't got to that point yet. I agree with Rob in that I do have other things to do these days, but I just love the day out to be honest, a few bevvies with your mates and a laugh and joke.

Or maybe I could just grow up..........nah!!

Even though I was only born in 82, it's the 70s/80s for me. Really wish I was born 20/30 years earlier. Modern day football and footballers is wank. Give me an audience with Saint and Cally/Barnes and Aldo over any modern day overpaid prima Donna

I prefer the simp!er world pre Sky and mega bucks in football. It's pretty easy to say that as a Liverpool fan because we were successful back in the 70s and 80s, but its more of a nostalgic thing for me. Even if I'd supported West Ham as a kid, I'd have preferred the 70s. It's when football was football.

Pre SKY, even though we were winning more often than not, it was a more even playing field not dominated by those who have money.

Mostly 3pm on Saturdays the odd one moved to Sundays, Midweek games kicking off at 7.30pm, 10 minute half time break, if you lived a reasonable distance from the ground it wasn't too late getting home. Ticket prices weren't a rip off & unless it was all ticket which for us only the Mancs & Everton, you could turn up on the day & pay at the turnstiles, i'm far too young to remember but read the stories & something like Wolves away in 76 game we needed to win to win the league so thousands of Reds went, & similar to Chelsea 86, things like that wouldn't happen now.

Even though I'm someone who wishes they were born fifty or a hundred years later than they were, I would still prefer the realism of 1970s and 1980s football to what it is today. Football used to be so socialistic, it seems as if the end of the Cold War not only brought an end to the "socialism" of the USSR but it also brought an end to the actual socialism of football.

Question is void as ive been in a boozer with (not 'with' but they were there) all the players getting bladdered in the modern day.

You see if from time to time - like being in the Blue Bar after beating Chelsea to get to the European Cup final - Rafa and all the lads were in there and Macca and a few others. I got home at 7 a.m. the next morning :D

I find this mood generally coincides with how good or bad Liverpool are playing at that particular time, which leads me to believe I'm a fickle c*nt.

If you're just getting your football fix from the telly as you get older I think a lot of people literally and metaphorically switch off.

The 90's was when they got it just right, kits were great, the players trained well and still went out on the piss. Win, win.

All have had their positives and negatives.

Sky aren't only bad for the game, some of their coverage is superb.

But the money has killed the game to some extent, but if they didn't do it, someone else would have done, as money is in all industrires now days which are popular.

It's not that easy. I've been trying to give it up for years.

Up until about 4 or 5 years ago, I used to watch a shit load of football outside of watching Liverpool

I could happily sit down and watch the full 90 minutes as a neutral

These days I can't be arsed anymore. My interest in it has completely dwindled

I don't even watch match of the day anymore. Its turned into a right load of bollox
