Gascoigne's slide where he missed the ball by an inch by Germany is still heartbreaking. I know England aren't popular now, but it was my first tournament as a kid so I was devastated when we went out. I also think Gazza would have found much more support from the football community had he been instrumental in England beating Germany and probably then winning the tournament against the Czechs.

Schmeichel keeping up his theme of being easily lobbed is also a standout memory.

Euro 96 definitely had the best football song ever.


Anytime I hear 'We're In this Together' the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.  OK, I haven't heard it since the opening ceremony, but that's a minor detail.

Some of the games weren’t that well attended.  This is the reverse view of Davor Suker receiving the ball before he chipped Schmeichel.  Some games only drew about 20,000.
