Tough one.
As a kid I was steve heighway down the left wing ( a seven year old version)
Jim Beglin would have been such a great player,I really felt for him.
Lawrenson and Hansen were gods at the time.
Loved Ronnie whealan always seemed to have time on the ball, but I did not know his manc history.
Can I sleep on this, they were all bloody good

These things always depend on age i would put Houghton above them all and Whelan second but if you never saw them in their pomp then Finnen, (or Jan O'Molby  Guinness naturalised surely)

I've never really got all the Beglin hate to be honest. He comes across as a bit of an eejit at times, but not bitter or hateful towards Liverpool.
If he is bitter, maybe it's because his career was ended so unfortunately at a time when we were so successful.

Favourite was Heighway - its an age thing, I was only a kid when he was playing.

Best was Lawrenson - no question about that.

Because it was such a successful era I would have to say Houghton, Aldo and Ronnie were my faves.

Houghton was such a Jack Russell job. Always getting stuck in with intensity and grabbing important goals.

Aldo was class and is a top lad still.

Ronnie I loved in his playing days however annoys me now on tv and that.

Final Answer Ray Houghton!

remember as a kid i got to see lfc training, and beglin was with the kids.  not sure what year, but think it was after he broke his leg.  he was a bad-tempered twat then!!!!  he was giving the kids a right kicking and a fair amount of abuse.  not unusual for those days, but i suspect he is an angry and very in your face character....so i tend not to think he is a bitter man, just very angry and it is easier to vent anger on the things you have strong emotions about (love or hate)

I can think of three Irish internationals who'd be in with a shout of playing in a best-ever Liverpool team. Heighway, Whelan and Lawrenson. Of those Lawrenson alone would probably make the cut. Arguably Liverpool's best-ever centre back. Only Hansen gets near.

It's not popular to say this because of what Lawrenson has become. Younger RAWKites will look at that fat, complacent, football-hating commentator on Match of the Day and wonder how anyone so ill-equipped could once have been the fastest, most skilful and fiercest tackling centre back in the business. But he was.

riise, ain't telling me that red hair came from nowhere.

Sure our red hair and freckles came directly from the viking feckers coming over all those years ago and rampaging and pillaging and raping our women!!!  He is probably a far out relation of some Rice family from down round Kilkenny!!!

But in real terms I always had a soft spot for Houghton and Stan Staunton.  I suppose it was because it was in the mid 80's that I started following Liverpool and Whelan and Lawrenson were on the way out.

Historical Irishman:  Elisha Scott was apparently a fundamental part of the history of our club.
Talented Irishman: Steve Heighway
Cool under pressure Irishman: Ronnie Whelan (shame his subsequent comments have damaged his reputation amongst a number of us)
Duracell Irishman: Ray Houghton
Goalscoring Irishman: Aldo
Wholehearted and committed Irishman: Steve Finnan

My favourite, (leaving Heighway out as his brother is a close mate), got to be Finnan.
