Quiz: one solitary league appearance
« on: July 16, 2023, 09:21:31 pm »
Here's one for fans of Pointless. In the last 50 years, 14 players have made just one league appearance for Liverpool. Can you name them with just the relevant season as a clue? Reminder: cups don't count.

1973/4 (x2)
1977/8
1980/1
1999/2000
2003/4
2004/5
2006/7
2009/10
2012/13
2015/6 (x3)
2018/9
I am alone now. I am beyond recrimination. The curtains have shut, the furniture has gone. I am transforming. I am vibrating. I am glowing. I am flying. Look at me now.

18/19 is I think someone who came in as a sub at home to Palace in the 4-3 win and made a decent tackle very late in the game. Forgotten his name though. :D

Is 99/00 Jon Newby? :D

Chirivella has to be one. Played in a fair few cup games but don't remember many league games at all.

If not him then maybe Daniel Ayala? He played after Skrtel and Carragher (I think) headed each other instead of the ball away at Spurs on the opening day.

03/04 might be Jon Otsemebor although I think he might have played a few games. Thought he looked quite decent.

04/05 I’ll guess John Welsh or Darren Potter. They bother featured a few times in League Cup and European qualifiers but probably didn’t get many league minutes. Think they started Palace away which might have been in between the two Chelsea semi final legs.

Ferri was 98/99.

12/13 - Conor Coady

15/16 - how many league games did Danny Ward play?

18/19 - Rafa Camacho
Ferri made two appearances, as did Bernard Dimode and Paul Jones..  they were all my best guesses

I thought Jack Robinson at first because he made his debut at Hull on the last day of 09/10. But then he definitely played more. He came on at Arsenal with Flanagan when there were a few injuries under Kenny. Think he’s still going at Sheffield United.

I think I remember Jordan Rossiter coming on against Arsenal in 15/16 and then he was injured on and off for the rest of the season and maybe only played a few Europa games so that would be my guess.

Kelley and Russell correct, but Storton played five times. Still one to get from 73/74.

Edit: Thompson is correct, somebody got him earlier in the thread.

73/74 - Derek Brownbill
I was at the Derek Brownbill match at Birmingham in September 1973, a game I remember for an extraordinary miss by Phil Boersma when he somehow failed to touch in a cross from the left with the goal at his mercy. This was every bit as bad as Rosenthal at Villa or Saunders at Luton. I think we were 1-0 down at the time and then Bill Shankly brought on Brian Hall for Derek and Little Bamber scored a stunning equaliser from way out to earn us a draw.

Just as a side note Derek Brownbill was the nephew of Jim McManiman, who ran "The Three Lords" public-house in Aldgate in the City of London where the London Branch of the Supporters' Club used to meet for many, many years in the 1970s and onwards.
