Monkey Island (old school and new school)
« on: September 11, 2011, 06:45:03 pm »
Having a very boring Sunday so cracked open the old SCUMMVM engine (forget those crappy special re rendered versions. I'm talking the VGA, 256 colour version that fitted on 7 floppy disks and came with the spinner wheel copy protection disk ;) ).

Played through the first 2 games. Was very surprised at how much I remembered from my last play through. Now starting the 3rd. Probably wont play the 4th one because all I remember at the time was how crap it was ;)

Loved them so much.
Remember the multi discs and the photocopied spin wheel from my Amiga days.
Played the first two recently on my iPad too. Loved the 3rd tho some didn't think it was that good.
Agree on the 4th being weak.
Enjoyed the recent 'tales from' too.

Loved them as well.

My favourite one is the third one - could play it all day long.

I think the fourth one wasnt that bad - but I didnt like the graphic of it. I think the style of the third one should have been used and it would have been better.

But one of the best game series I ever played.

Can you get the 3rd one off steam or something? If not where's the best place to get it?

Is the remade original any good on the PS3? I played the demo, and it controlled poorly, with average graphics and a framerate that seemd like it was about 12fps. Didn't leave a great impression, to put it lightly

Great games. The other Lucasarts titles were defiinitely worth a go as well. Loom was pretty damned good, a shame it never finished off as it was meant to be a trilogy I believe.

Gonna plug another of my favourite series here, if anyone's a fan of that style of old school humour, but would like a bit more gameplay in terms of battle, etc, the Quest for Glory series is fantastic. If you're capable of playing through older games, and like them, its definitely woth a go.

I really enjoyed the tales from Monkey Island even though I didn't finish the 5th episode. Did they do a second series?

Loved Monkey Island 3. That and Broken Sword were the first games I played on my first PC about 13 years ago. I hadn't owned a computer since my Speccy and the days of the Arctic Text Adventures years before and the step up blew me away. Wonderful artwork, style and humour. Still my favourite ever game experiences, so much so that I still replay them now and again when I've got a bit of time and feel a bit nostalgic. Tried the others in the MI series but 1 and 2 felt like a step backwards (which technically they were) and I couldn't get past the verb+object interface, dated graphics and lack of voices. Maybe I should get onto the remakes. MI 4 was a bit crap and I much preferred Grim Fandango which used the same game engine IIRC. Tales of Monkey Island looks pretty good (I only played the first one before deciding to wait for the disk release of the series which is on my crimbo list, probably now along with the remakes of the first two). Hope they remake MI 3 someday as the 'only' thing they need to do is increase the game resolution, everything else is in place already.

I really enjoyed the tales from Monkey Island even though I didn't finish the 5th episode. Did they do a second series?

Not yet they haven't, but if you enjoyed Tales of Monkey Island, then I'd definitely recommend the Back To The Future series they did recently. Same kind of feel to it.

Completely forgotten about that!!! Special little things.

When I replayed the first one on a Touch earlier this year, it reminded me that it's probably the funniest game I've ever played as well as everything else. Especially the bit where you get captured in the village on MI and they can't work out how you keep escaping.  ;D

Absolutely crucial, if we blow this one we're done as a top team, this is an unbelievable chance to return to our perch, we must be patient.

People realise they can change the graphics on the recent 'Special Editions' back to the original graphics right? That's how I played the 1st one on XBox. I played the first 2 originally on Amiga, never got the 3rd for some reason but I liked the 4th at the time.

If by "the 3rd", you mean The Curse of Monkey Island you should find it and play it as soon as possible :)

I enjoyed the 3rd actually unlike most.

My order from best to not best (won't say worst):
2 - 3 - 1 -4

Not including the new 'Tales' which were also quite fun

The end of LucasArts has prompted many a wailing and gnashing of teeth from Star Wars fans concerned about future and development titles.

Surely however this is the finest example of their output? Noticed a special edition of the original (slightly brushed up) was on sale on Steam for the princely sum of £6. Bargain!

Love these games, one of the first that got me interested in computer games. Funny and immensely challenging.

Ron Gilbert, The creator of Monkey Island (1 and 2) has spoken about the death of Lucasfilm Games (name given before Lucasarts) and his view on the future

http://grumpygamer.com/4103820

I still have hope that I might get the rights to Monkey Island back someday. LucasArts shutting down doesn't change anything since Disney bought them back in Oct.  Maybe there will be less of an emotional attachment to it for them.  Who knows.  Not me.

He's also spoken on Twitter about wanting the full rights and not a licence from Disney and having the freedom to do he game his way. I get the feeling that he doesn't really see the 3rd, 4th or the Telltale games series as proper Monkey Island games.

There has been talk of some sort of kickstarter fund being put in place to get the rights signed over but I dont think Disney will play ball.

Loved Monkey Island 3. That and Broken Sword were the first games I played on my first PC about 13 years ago.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/3blzGwd4xLg?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;rel=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/3blzGwd4xLg?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;rel=0</a>

went on the lookout for the back to the future in my local GAME but couldn't find it, ended up picking up all four Broken Swords for £7.50 (2 for £15 deal).

i think monkey island was the sole reason i wanted a PC when i was young!
