I also believe that the welfare lobby has every good intention in the world. But is simply, sadly, misguided.
The link between welfarism and the Philpott case is there for all to see in my opinion.
Oh dear. I wrote a long reply but deleted it because it's pointless with someone who has views like that.
The link between 'welfarism' (whatever the fuck that is) and Philpott is that he happened to be on benefits. The actual link is his psychotic controlling nature, which would probably have played out even if he was in work. If you jumped off your and George Osbornes anti-welfare agenda-driven bandwagon and look at the available research, you'd know that this sort of act is almost always to do with loss of control, with the highest risk during separation and divorce.
Now it does appear that Philpott is a slightly different case but that's because he's a violent criminal, not because of the welfare state.
If you're going to condemn the welfare system because it might have created a motive for Philpott to carry out the crime, then you should surely be condemning Life Insurance for the same reason. There are plenty of people who are now dead because a life insurance policy gave someone a financial motive for committing murder.
See, even if it was a motive, it says nothing about the welfare state itself.
