Headers, and who plays up front/on the wing
« on: May 20, 2008, 05:24:30 pm »
someone made an interesting point in another thread.

yes he did. perhaps he left it there? seriously, someone correct me on this- most of his crosses for us went to crouch's head right? as opposed to el nino who'd rather be given a ball to his feet.

i never really gave it much thought, but its actually true. you can argue that crouch is also good with his feet, but his stand out strength is in the air. fernando is seemingly better with his feet (has he scored with his head yet?).

given rafa's preference for playing babel and kuyt on the left and right respectively, maybe you could say that playing torres makes more sense? i'm not the best at stats and all that, but i'm guessing that when pennant plays, crouch usually plays too?

i just found it an interesting point. i suppose you could say the wings and the one up top are dependent on each other? it could also be a sign on what kind of winger would fit in better into the team. maybe we need someone who's good at fizzing ball in low, rather than someone who can float it in? thinking about it now, our attack really isn't that good at headers, bar crouch.

apologies if this post is a bit messy. its getting late over here and i just had to get my thoughts across.

main point being...we're not that good with crossing and headers generally, so we might as well focus on playing it low.

Answering your question, He scored at spurs and in one of the two Anfield hattrick games with his head.

For the rest, I'm trying to figure out what's your main point exactly?

EDIT: well I think we play less of them when Crouch isn't on anyways.

Yeah Tottenham and Boro. And Porto. And Blackburn.

So what the fuck is the point of this exactly?

I would say Crouch is better on the floor than in the air, fair enough he wins more headers but generally I would say he's quite poor at heading.

If you don't think Torres can use his head well, then check out his goal against boro. One of the best headers I've seen.  Find it yourself though ;)

my head's all over the place tonight. apologies if it isn't that clear. :butt

i guess i'm trying to say that maybe we're really better off without "true" wingers. torres, while not bad with his head, is something else with the ball slipped to his feet. maybe we should just focus on players who can cut inside and play those "cute" passes to him.

since in the manc games we scored 0 goals thats impossible

to the OP please check facts before you try to make a point, btw torres has probably scored more goals this season than crouch has throughout his whole career(ok ive exaggerated but fact is crouch is shite with his head)

Yep, the system requires two forwards more than two wingers. Or, wing forwards to be precise.

Scored a cracking little header against West Ham as well.
Placed in the top corner in front of the Kop.

Kuyt crossed it from inside the box.

Probably would of hit Crouch on the shoulder and gone wide or he would have tried volleying it!!

yes. i agree. we need an altogether more mobile and aggessive front line than we have but not necessarily wingers per se. oh how i crave a dalglish, or a beardsley, or a barnes....halcyon days. christ, with dalglish alongside torres might score 50 in a season.
Left England 1990...still on our perch...I think I'd better come back because it's all gone haywire since!

In think Crouch sucks at using his head other than for something to bounce the ball off.

Crouch has a pretty small head, his neck is big.
