The Street View mode looks pretty sweet.

Not much good for driving abroad, roaming charges would be huge but this looks good. Hopefully it will launch on iphone and other smartphones as well

Yeah it looks great. It's going to be the first thing I put on the Desire when I get it next week. Set the phone up to do voice search and you're good to go.

Rooting it is same as a jailbreak i take it?...duno if I want to risk bricking it? Is there even a rooting file out for the desire?

Just got the HTC Hero for free today - a very good friend of mine is a buyer at a large danish telecom-business. My Missus has an iPhone and I've envied her for a while, but now I see I have nothing to be jealous of. I really look forward to getting to know this monster even better... :D

What the fuck does that mean?
I am seriously considering getting a HTC phone either the Legend or the Desire but more than probably the Legend.
How do all these App things work?
Where does one get these App things from?
Are there any seriously must have App things?
Is there anyone out there who knows less than me about these App things ;) ;D?

Came to this thread a bit late, but from what I've read, the real relationship trouble is not between you and your girl, but between you and a small box of Tampax. You obviously need something more substantial in your life like a huge Costco sized box of jam rags, seeing as you're such a massive fucking quim

Hey, how did I miss this thread.

Here's some Android Apps I've downloaded and stuck with, many I've tried and knobbed off.

Handcent - Free - Much better userface and conversation screens that are fully custonisable for SMS etc.

Advanced Task Killer - Free - Kills running tasks etc.

Radiotime - £2.89 - Endless lists of National and Local radio stations such as 5Live, Talksport, Radio 1, Radio Merseyside etc etc. Knocks the inbuilt FM radio into a cocked hat and you don't need the earphones plugged in either.

Beebplayer - Free - BBC iplayer.

Google Maps - Already installed on Desire - Google maps, now with navigate and directions.*

Soccer Score Centre Lite - Free - Score updates in a Sky Sports style. I bought the full version for £1.50 that enables notifications on your fav team etc.

Color Note - Free - Notepad app, they are pretty much all the same to be fair.

Traffic4Englandfree - Free - Traffic Updates, seemed better than the RAC version I tried.

BBC News - Free - BBC News

Sky News - Free - Sky News

Places Directory - Free - Restaurants, Cafes, Bars, Hotels, Petrol Stations etc etc.

Reality Browser 3.0 - Free - As above but uses camera (I think)

Barcode Scanner - Free - What it says, scan barcodes and find prices and great for scanning to locate apps on the PC.

ShopSavvy - Free - Same as above, will need to test to find which is preferable.

WhatOn - Free - TV listings guide

RecordIt - £2.89 - Same prog as above but utilises the ability to set your Sky+ to record.

London Underground - Free - Live info on tube, map, route finder etc.

Ringroid - Free - Set ringtones, SMS, various ringtones etc etc.

TrainTimes UK - Free - Exactly what it says, including route planner.

Just returned from a holiday in Mallorca and turned on the phone (HTC Hero) as we'd arrived in Copenhagen et voila: An annoying loop of starting up, getting the message: "com.htc.provider has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" accompanied  by a "Force close" button that starts the loop all over again. Can't even get into the bloody Android interface. Several forums on the net has solutions that require you can get access to the interface but haven't been able to find any that helps me.

HELP PLEASE!!!

Yeo, downloaded it myself on Sat and find it better than the default browser. Like the gesture feature too.

Only removed the apps I've installed myself, but it kept all ringtones I'd made with RingDroid and kept my pics and contacts as well.  ??? From what I've been able to find on the net it's either the weather app or the Twitter app that messes some Hero's up when they've been turned off in one place (ie Spain) and and then turned on in another place (ie Denmark) after a flight trip or something similar.

Weird... BUT I'm happy  :wellin now and really appreciate the help - simple as it may seem.  :thumbup

Android's a bigger platform in the US than Apple's now, so you can definitely see the apps getting better and better and rolled out quicker.

I only have an iPhone because I personally have no clue about style, and delegate these matters to Steve Jobs. You should see my collection of roll-necks.

Yeah. A lot of that seems to be down to Verizon having the best network in the US and no iPhone (CDMA network, not GSM).

very interesting.

but with Sony, Samsung and Motorola installing Android on their handsets, iPhone will lack the  market share they crave. iPhone is a brilliant phone, they just progressed too slowly with it. I have a feeling that multi-tasking will be just a tease. Something big will happen for 4G.

i couldnt justify buying an iphone (for £200) with the camera it has. so android does what i need it to do for the time being.

Yeah I thought it was more because Google have their OS on a range of phones. The latest of them are actually pretty good in terms of speed and functionality, so definitely up there with the iPhone if not better.

I'm hoping OS4 has something a lot bigger than the shite they showed in that silly presentation. All of that stuff's already in the market, just not on the official Apple OS.

The more innovation, the better. It doesn't really matter where it comes from.

Innovation is good, but if innovation is limited to 1 device type then it is not so good.  I am amazed no one had put a lawsuit against the monopoly of Apple OS on Apple phones.

Innovation is good, but if innovation is limited to 1 device type then it is not so good.  I am amazed no one had put a lawsuit against the monopoly of Apple OS on Apple phones.

Apple's always been limited but it's always led the industry in major breakthroughs, and they've always been improved on by other companies. I'm not usually an early adoptor of new technology, so I've always bought the Sony mp3 player because it sounded better than an iPod, or bought a Windows PC because it was better than an Apple in certain areas... and now I've bought a Desire instead of an iPhone because it does more things than the iPhone and as quickly.

I'm liking the iPad a lot, but will wait until a better one comes out with more functionality (a USB port would be nice for example) before I buy a tablet.

I like Apple as they're one of the most innovative companies around. They make big breakthroughs and always have done. But I'd rather wait until companies like Google or Microsoft come in, refine them a bit more and release them at cheaper prices. I'm not too averse to waiting for a better product as I've not always had a lot to spend on them- so it makes more sense to wait a bit and buy more for my money. I can see myself splashing out on such things when I have disposable income though  ;D

Apple isn't interested in selling everyone an iPhone, just like they're not interested in selling everyone a Mac. They'll maintain a position at the high end of the market with a premium price and a big fat profit margin, just like they do with every product.

Meanwhile, Android handsets will be reduced to commodities in a race to the bottom because the manufacturers will find it very difficult to differentiate their products, just as with Windows PCs. The only possible exception is HP, because they now have an OS of their own and the in-house skills to develop it further.

Apple doesn't give a fuck if 20 times as many Android phones as iPhones sell, because they'll make 20 times as much on each handset sold, and probably make a lot more on apps and multimedia, because their customers, simply by definition of buying an iPhone, are not as price sensitive.

It'd be retarded to claim Google has somehow beaten Apple when they receive exactly zero pence for each Android handset sold that isn't a Nexus One.

What effect this will have with regard to the availability of software on each platform remains to be seen. Without a doubt, Android will end up with more applications, but that's a small part of the story. Just as Apple won't allow cross-platform apps because they reduce the iPhone to lowest-common denominator specs, Android apps will mostly be designed towards the least capable handsets out there to maximise the potential market.

This will very likely mean older version of Android. Why? Because Android phones are sold by phone companies, and phone companies have no culture of or interest in updating hardware they've already sold. Waste of resources. The iPhone is a different kettle of fish (as is the Palm Pre, because they're made by computer companies). Typically, Apple is still adding features to your two-year old phone.

Even if HTC et al do decide they'd like to offer you an update to the next version of Android, that's often not possible, because Google develops Android entirely in secret, and informs no-one of the hardware specs it will require for the next version. It might be released as open source, but Apple and Microsoft both give developers far more information on and access to upcoming version of their OSes than Google, who typically says next to nothing until it spits out the next version of Android fully-formed.

Innovation is good, but if innovation is limited to 1 device type then it is not so good.  I am amazed no one had put a lawsuit against the monopoly of Apple OS on Apple phones.

The fact that Adobe has done exactly that aside, it's a completely preposterous idea. What Apple is doing with the iPhone is in no way different to what Sony, MS and Nintendo do with their consoles. Furthermore, equating a 20% market share with a monopoly is more than a stretch.

Spot-on. You can be pretty damn sure no-one would have a (finger) touchscreen phone if not for Apple. Android was originally stylus-driven until Google saw the iPhone, creamed its pants, and copied the fuck out of it.

The same goes for tablets. Say what you like about the lack of features of the iPad, but again if not for Apple, there'd be nothing available but tablets with bloated desktop OSes designed for mouse and keyboard shoehorned into them. There'd never have been a mainstream 10-hour tablet if Apple hadn't built one first.

Yeah. Also, didn't Apple have the first desktop PC as we know it or was it the mouse they introduced? Bit before my time so I'm not sure  :D

Yes and no. Jobs basically stole the entire idea from Xerox PARC. PARC will probably go down in history as the dumbest smart company ever. They invented the GUI, the mouse, the laser printer and Ethernet networking, yet no-one's ever heard of them. Xerox had no idea what they had on their hands.

The only thing you can really give Apple credit for in that regard is for actually shipping a product.

The iPhone set the benchmark against and context in which Android is measured. It's perfectly relevant. Apart from my last post, which was answering a question.

------------------------------------------------

As the Android Flash Player appears to be finally on its way, who actually wants it on their phone?

Seeing as normal webpages with half a dozen Flash ads are far more common than Flash-based sites, and that this will hammer your battery and monthly download limit, do you really want Flash Player?

Of course, Adobe could build in something like Click-to-Flash, but they won't.

At the very least, watching flash videos from within the browser is great. Despite what Steve Jobs or your good self wants people to believe, flash is not evil and there are some very good flash apps out there as well. Its another avenue for applications to be implemented from well established development channels so no complaints here.

As far as click to flash, the default browser on the desire (and likely other htc's) already allows you to switch on/off flash if you want to and mozilla's mobile browser will no doubt likely allow you to disable on a click basis.

Does that about cover the iphone context crap and can we get back to talking about android and how to get the best out of it please?

On that note, Appbrain, essential.

I do not share Jobs' opinion. Not at all. He's talking about Flash as an IDE, I'm talking about Flash Player. I have no problem with Flash as an IDE, largely because I know Flash, but not Objective-C and Cocoa, so I'd be able to write apps for my own iPhone instead of having to make them web-based.

I don't believe Flash Player is evil, just often used for "evil" and very badly implemented (have you used Flash Player on OS X or Linux?). I'm sure advertisers will manage to create just as intrusive and annoying ads in HTML5/SVG or whatever web-standards compliant tech you care to name.

As far as click to flash, the default browser on the desire (and likely other htc's) already allows you to switch on/off flash if you want to and mozilla's mobile browser will no doubt likely allow you to disable on a click basis.

That's great. Is there an ad-blocker, too? The lack thereof is something that pisses me off enormously on the iPhone.
