They're vicious in their hatred of Scousers in a way that goes way beyond a football match. Why? Because Scousers are 'job-shy', 'scum', 'self-pitying', 'slum-dwelling', 'thieves'. The insults are never about the football, they're about a city of people who are seen to represent the bottom rung of the working-class and Mancunians are as sneering and hateful as your average Etonian. Mancunians are not alone, of course, we live in a country obsessed with the caricature of the benefit-stealing, skiver (whilst all too happy to prop up inheritance tax dodgers) so this attitude is ingrained into large swathes of the British public. Mate, all of their insults come from real life political ideas or policies. They sing 'Sign On' because of the high levels of unemployment in Liverpool in the 80s, they sing 'In Your Liverpool Slums' because the city suffers from poverty and was almost cut adrift by Thatcher's government, they sing about 'eating rats in your council house' because they think social housing is to be sneered at, they sing 'always the victim' because they believed the establishment lies, I could go on...

Calling them inbreds isn't embracing them but it's not exactly based on decades of right-wing smear campaigns and political agendas either. It's easy to dismiss it as banter but when the British public votes Tory every four years because they hate 'benefit scroungers' and fans come to Anfield every week singing about claiming the dole it's hard to dismiss a link in the mindset. If the Mancs want to side with Thatcher, Johnson and The Sun then they are giving us every reason to label them Tories.

Personally, I don't talk about Mancunians in that kind of way, but I understand your point. I don't have a problem with piss-taking, whether giving it or taking it, but so much of the stuff they (and the Bitters*) spew out goes way, way beyond anything that could be called "banter". There's no "banter" in jibes over poverty, governmental neglect, unemployment and stadium disasters.

On the whole I find our jibes at United and Everton to be pretty harmless. We might paraphrase Ferguson and sing "Fergie's right, your fans are shite" but their retort is "The S*n was right, you're murderers". One is a harmless piss-take, the other is deliberately offensive and adopts the Tory establishment party line since 1989. This pretty much highlights the difference in mindset between the fanbases. Theirs is a long way past banter. Apart from singing '20 times' I see very little from them you could regard as football banter. The overwhelming majority of it is bile based in politics and social issues. The irony of that is stark when you realise the communities these people also come from.
