"Damp squib" comet is huge disappointment
« on: October 16, 2012, 11:51:33 pm »
The newly discovered comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) appears to be heading on a trajectory that could make for one of the most spectacular night-sky events in living memory. Why is this comet expected to be so unique? Two reasons:

Astronomers predict that the comet will pass just 1.16 million miles from the Sun as it swings around its perihelion, or closest approach. (This may seem like a lot, but remember—the Sun is big. If we were to scale the Sun down to the size of Earth, the comet would pass well within the orbits of dozens of satellites.) The close approach will melt enormous amounts of the comet’s ice, releasing dust and gas and forming what should be a magnificent tail.

After it loops around the Sun and forms this tail, the comet should then pass relatively close to Earth—not near enough to cause any worry, but close enough to put on a great show. Viewers in the Northern Hemisphere will get the best view as the comet blooms in the weeks approaching Christmas 2013. The comet could grow as bright as the full moon.

Of course, comets have a habit of not living up to expectations. This one could be sucked into the Sun during its close approach, or not grow as much of a tail as astronomers hope.

There's talk of it fizzling out somewhat

Late in 2012, astronomers discovered a distant sungrazing comet whose size and brightness at its great distance from the sun got many people very excited. Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) was said to have the potential to become a striking object visible to the eye alone around the time of its perihelion – or closest approach to the sun – on November 28, 2013. We began to hear the words Comet ISON and comet of the century in the same sentence. In June, July and part of August 2013, Comet ISON has been behind the sun as seen from Earth. Astronomers were waiting for it to emerge from the sun’s glare in August, so check on its brightness. A bright Comet ISON in August might mean a very bright comet for earthly observers in November and December. But now Comet ISON has been recovered – by amateur astronomer Bruce Gary in Arizona – and it is not as bright as hoped.

December's when it'll look best. It's still on the far side of the sun from us, until the end of next week.

Quote
Starting at around 95,000mph at the start of the month, Comet ISON will eventually reach an astonishing 845,000mph on November 28th when it catapults round the Sun at perihelion!

Seriosuly though, come the time when it should be visible, I want to know where I should be looking. Gonna try to locate a decent spot with no lights for at least a mile radius and get my da's telescope if he'll let me have it. Think he spent over £2k on the fucker and I've never seen him use it.

December

During December 2013 we should be able to see Comet ISON in both the morning and evening sky as it races through the constellations. In early December it will be visible after 7am between  between Libra and Ophiuchus, a couple of weeks later it will be between Serpens and Hercules, on 22 December it will be in Hercules  near the globular cluster M13. By 25 December it will be close to the Plough, and is circumpolar from UK and Ireland, meaning it will be in the sky all night long. On  26-27 December, ISON will be at its closest  to Earth at 64 million km. At the end of December the comet is in Draco and will be visible in the north west by evening, in the morning sky before before sunrise in east.  The comet will be fading, but will hopefully be still naked eye visibility.

Hopefully you won't need your telescope mate, at least not for a normal view. If all goes to plan, it'll be visible with the naked eye. Earlier predictions of it being brighter than a full moon seem to be a little exaggerated, but it's not impossible. Let's hope it survives the next couple of days.

Comet Ison seems to have been destroyed in its encounter with the Sun.

Telescopes saw the giant ball of ice and dust disappear behind the star, but then fail to emerge as expected.

Astronomers continue to search for the object, but it is almost certain the much vaunted "Comet of the Century" has gone out with a whimper.

Despite its great size, Ison was probably torn apart in the immense heat and tidal forces so close to the Sun.

Professor Tim O'Brien, associate director of Jodrell Bank, UK, said: "The nucleus has gone very faint, which you wouldn't expect.

"We can't be sure - but it's not looking good. We'll have to keep watching."

Ison had captivated skywatchers with its promise all year.

A "fresh" object flung in towards the inner Solar System from its home far beyond the outer planet Neptune, it was hoped it might produce a brilliant tail that would arc across the night sky, perhaps for weeks.

But even as it sped towards its encounter with the Sun, Ison was proving to be somewhat disappointing. It was not brightening as predicted.

This led scientists to fear for its survival when it grazed past the star at a distance of 1.2 million km at 18:35 GMT.

The European and and US space agencies' Sun-watching Soho satellite observed Ison approach, and sweep, behind the Sun, but then fail to come back around. Minutes after the comet should have reappeared, the Soho images showed nothing.

Passing close to the Sun, Ison would have been subjected to temperatures up to abut 2,000C. The immense gravity of the star would also have squeezed the object as it tumbled end of end.

weathers been shite here anyway so probably wouldn't have been able to see it
