Liverpool defender Joel Matip has signed a new long-term deal which will keep him at the club until summer 2024.

The 28-year-old Cameroon international has scored two goals in nine appearances in all competitions for the Reds this season.

Matip joined Liverpool from Schalke in 2016 and helped Jurgen Klopp's side to the 2018-19 Champions League title.

"It's a great feeling to be a longer part of the club. It's really just a great feeling," he said.

"From outside, you know Liverpool is such a big club - but when you are inside, then you really get a feeling for how big the club is in all the countries - the supporters are everywhere. It's a massive and big club that I think every player would want to play for.

"We have a young and talented team and I think every one of us is hungry. Now we've seen how it is to win something and we want to have that feeling again."

Matip missed Liverpool's last two games before the international break through injury but is expected to return for Sunday's visit to Manchester United.

Played for his contract, now he’ll slip back into Joe Cole mode and milk us for years. Will we ever learn?

But really, one of our better bits of business recently in a pretty strong competition? Seems like a great, humble guy and it’s great how fearlessly he has taken on challenges for his spot and stepped up. What a great team we have these days.

Great news, and just reward for 8 months of consistent performances. He was probably 4th choice at the start of last season but has taken his opportunity when it came. Being only 28 means he still has years in front of him.

New contract for Joel  ;D  8)

Joel Matip has today signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool Football Club.

The centre-back put pen to paper on the deal at Melwood on Friday afternoon, committing his future to the Reds.

Matip told Liverpoolfc.com moments after inking the terms: “It’s a great feeling to be a longer part of the club. It’s really just a great feeling.

“From outside, you know Liverpool is such a big club – but when you are inside, then you really get a feeling for how big the club is. In all the countries, the supporters are everywhere. It’s a massive and big club that I think every player would want to play for.

“We have a young and talented team and I think every one of us is hungry. Now we’ve seen how it is to win something and we want to have that feeling again.

“There are a lot of things still to achieve. You never know how it will end, you just have to work hard and do the best you can do. Then we will see.

“It is an honour to be a part of the club. It makes me happy that people think I’ve done a good job and they want to keep me.”
