Also a bit of an update on Joel Matip’s situation. He signed a 4-year deal in 2016 but the club had the option to extend it by a further year which they have enacted. As a result he’s under contract until summer 2021

MOTM for me. Absolutely immense all game and won every header, which was an attribute he used to be poor at.
if I came home to allison in bed with my wife I'd ask him to phone Virgil to see if he wanted to pop round too.

The commentators picked up on it a little but I do also love how proactive this pair are; they're quite happy to read the interception and get in ahead of an attacker with his back to goal, a situation which not only cuts out the danger but also often sets us away on the attack. They do it with such physicality that it tends to be either possession for us in a reasonably dangerous situation or a foul to them somewhere up by the half-way line, giving us ample time to reorganise and get men behind the ball. It's sort of our equivalent to City's tactical fouling, it just shuts down our opponents' game completely and  makes the long ball (along with our high line and insane aerial ability) a very limited tactic against us. Long gone are the days when that used to be one of our Achilles heels.

That's harsh on Virg, but a good argument could be made for Matip being our best CB right now, individually. Reads the game like a Jedi

Noticed in the hand shakes before the game that there was no fake smile or laugh from Joel as he went down the line of Chelsea players, just a ruthless glare. Not sure he'd have been as imposing in seasons past, he seems to have realised that he's actually a pretty powerful fella, no more Mr Nice Guy.

What a player! The way he nicks the ball ahead of attackers as HBHR described is a joy to behold for us and a nightmare to play against for opposition. He's always been a very good defender on the ground for us, but he's become so much better in the air too. The days of his 50 pence head are hopefully long gone.

I'm not trying to take credit away from Joel because he deserves all the praise possible. But it also points out what a leader and calming influence VVD is. Matip doesn't seem to be a natural leader -- he's more of a follower I think, and he seemed a bit skittish (though talented) when next to Lovren.  But knowing VVD is next to him has allowed the talented Matip to gain confidence, not worry about his partner, and play to the best of his potential.

Joel and Virgil are a perfect combo. And we've still got Gomez and Lovren (who makes mistakes but is still quite decent) behind them!

It looks like the league has established a strategy against us which is defend deep, concede the wide areas and hit the channels behind Trent and Robbo. The problem with that is they’re generally 2v2 at best against Matip and VVD, who are two of the best 1v1 defenders I’ve ever seen.

Can count on one hand the number of times I can remember him getting burned for pace. In possession we’re usually setting our line  10 yards into the opponent half and Joel does like a wander forwards, so it should happen more often. But his positioning is remarkable.

Hes snapping 30 yard passes between the lines onto the preferred toe time and again, apparently effortlessly. Hes probably the best passer on the ground on the team, most everyone else looks past about 20, 25 yards they put it in the air or into space. and he does it while hes moving at pace.

Crazy good.

Yeah its a great offensive weapon. At least once a game it'll get cut off and put us under pressure - and it looks like an awful pass when it doesn't come off - but its well worth the risk.

Like a lot of reds, every now and then I like to re-watch the CL final highlights on youtube and did so again the other day.

In that game, Matip has the ball infront of the box and plays this magnificent long curling pass between 2 players out wide to Andy Robertson which sets him on his way to having a shot which Lloris tips over.

What always gets me though is just how good the pass from Matip is, it is literally world class distribution of the ball from a CB.

VVD ain't too bad when it comes to passing the ball long either. Happy days.

He's a gutsy passer too. He has enough faith in his abilities to back himself to play out of pressure but also seems to have enough judgment to know when to risk it versus when to play it safe. His distribution is magnifacent.

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

A year or so ago we were wondering who to buy that could play alongside VVD and form a strong partnership. Matip has grabbed his chance and has improved markedly under Klopp. He gives us dominance in the air in our own box and when we have a corner. He seems to compliment VVD so well.

The only thing that I think he needs to improve in is when he carries the ball fowards. At times it looks like he rushes the final pass a bit but he is getting much better.

Edit: not sure how Matip was autocorrected to National.
