I hope to god I am wrong. But the lad is unbelievably one dimensional. And I don't just say that on the back of today obviously.

He is not even dangerous in the air, his size makes him a threat but his actual technique when it comes to heading isn't there yet. Thats something he can work on, but im not sure what other areas he can improve significantly.

I'm sorry, I just don't see it. I admire fans for being optimistic but he will be a marginally more effective Kevin Davies I reckon with a good left foot.

He is not fit to lace the boots of the lad he replaced (whom i will not mention of course )

As I have said, I think he is technically an extremely limited player. His physicality is an asset but im uneasy about the temptation players seem to have to emply a "lump it forward" attitude. Kenny likes to play a passing game and I don't think Carroll is the right fit for that philosophy.

Apologies for not toeing the line, but its just an observation.

He worked hard today sure, but we need more. I will stand by my assessment so fire whatever insults ye want.

Wasnt totally his fault. Charlie Adam should have been marking the man that put the cross in.

Heaps of potential shown in the first 45mins from everyone. We need match fitness. And hopefully a fast right winger. *fingers crossed* Clone downing!

I thought andy did well first half, had a goal disallowed, dropped deeper and laid it off to more creative players and worked hard, second half he played alot poorer but so did everyone really bar a couple of players.

He just needs to learn the value of possession.

Pointless shots are just that and needs to learn how to use the ball better... apart from that he could be massive for us for 10 plus

Our expectations are too much.

Already a negative vibe for the start of the season after ONE match.

No, they arent.

We should have rode on our first performance well in to the second half and killed them. Instead of that, we started playing like schoolboys with no direction in our passes and with our attack lacking venom and intent.

Just because its the first game of the season, it does not mean that we are not entitled to three points.

Looked brilliant in the first half, don't see why people are slating Carroll because I think that was his best performance in a red shirt (apart from city). Really disappointed with the second half display, we looked poor off the ball in midfield. For all the positives we saw when Adam had the ball, I think he lets himself down when he doesn't have it; too many times their midfielders were drifting past him into good positions and it was left to Lucas to track 2 players every time. 

I'm not going to let this result get to me, it's the start of a long term project and these players need time to gel. You can see that the potential is overflowing from the first half display - some real positives to take away and build on.

I think the thing that disappointed me the most, in both halves, was the poor ball retention. I was probably spoiled by Benitez, but I was used too 60-70% possession at home, with questionable offensive moves. Now we are down to 50% possession at home, but still lack attacking prowess.
Beatings will continue until morale improves...

Kenny got it wrong. Simple as.

1) Flanno over Kelly. For me, Flanno is if we have no other option. Hes still too young and not good enough. Carragher wasn't playing either which could not have helped with a lack of guidance at the back.

I didnt actually see the game, who played at centre back?

Flanagan fell apart after the goal. i felt for him but hopefully he can pick himself up. Not too sure he should start against Arsenal though.

Our fitness level doesnt look too good and its been like this for a while now. I understand its pre season but we havent been finishing games on a high since 08-09.

Carroll needs a team to play a specific way and we arent set up to play that way imo. He is like one of those specialist penalty takers in hockey who only come on when the team wins a penalty to score. Carroll is a threat from set pieces but he hasnt shown that he can do it in open play, whether that is link up play, passing or harrassing opposition players. Ill give him the season but i wasnt sold on the idea of him when we bought him.

Aquilani? when we couldnt pass the ball in the second half we needed someone like him to get it down and play it. Keep the ball ticking over and link the play. Meireles was tidy but brought on too late.

Enrique was man of the match. Very tidy, never let anyone past him, built like a wall.

I dunno, he looks very static to me, seems to have a heavy touch and headers a lot of ball over the bar.

His first touch lay offs in the first half suggest otherwise. All of those headers were from him rescuing the attack after a poor delivery. I wouldn't have expected him to score any of them.

He also scored but got robbed

First half was very good, kept the ball on the ground, good movment, should have been 3-0 up before half time.
Second half was awful. gave away posession way to easy. No movment.

He was pretty fucking good.

Assist for Suarez, another for Carroll if that goal hadn't been wrongly disallowed, sprayed the ball around well and a few good efforts himself. He was the main person still running his socks off at the end too.

Downsides were his tackling wasnt great, particularly in the second half where he was a bit rash going into challenges.

Other than that Im struggling to think of negatives so not sure where you're getting your "far from it"

Sprayed the ball around well? Did you really watch the game?.He made a couple of decent passes in the first half , thats about it. I've already acknowledged his FK for Suarez's goal but he looked shaky under pressure , quite static and picked the wrong pass on many occasions. Second half he was invisible with Lucas doing twice the work.

Few good efforts? Which were these? I remember one floating shot which was pedestrian for the keeper to save.

Nothing against the lad but I hope he gets more in sync with the way we play and modifies his style accordingly.

Just want to say that I'm so fucking glad we didn't get the Europa League. Maybe those who were just mindlessly blerting "WE'RE LIVERPOOL. WE ARE EUROPE!" can understand where we were coming from now. If we had the Europa to deal with as well this season the best we could hope for would be top 6, maybe 5th at a push.

In terms of the depth of our defensive line he is, IMO, very literally holding us about 10-20 yards further back than we should be. Enrique wasn't given any license/opportunity to attack at all today which is really not the way it should be when trying to pressure a side like S'land into submission at home. Someone like Enrique could and should be a crucial weapon in this type of game, it's a crying shame to see him holding the line 10-20 yards inside our own half when a Liverpool attack has just broken down.
Good observation. I agree about Carra. As he gets older it's becoming more apparent that perhaps we have to be further back than we'd want to to protect him a little. But there really is no excuse for a lack of movement that causes the ball to end up at Carra's feet so often. We know 80% of the time he'll hoof it and the other teams know that.

I've seen a lot of comments about our fitness. I think there is a little of that(which is a little bit worrisome), but come on, we weren't tired straight out of half time! The whole second half was awful.

I'm shocked that a bit of tempo and fight from sunderland in the second half was enough to completely derail our football.

Before saying we should have buried them and we were unlucky not to win, you've got to look at sunderland in the first half, because they were shite, they were the punchbag, we weren't even in a match.

But the second half, that's the test, that's where you see the qualities of the team. Sunderland aren't a world class side and when they fought back in the second half you'd have expected at least a bit of ability to get round that and still assert our game, but that little bit of pressure just took us right out of the game.

It's going to take a lot of time to see whether the likes of Downing, Henderson and Caroll can justify their prices and Kenny's decision that these were the best signings for the money available in the European market.

Personally I have my worries. If I'm genuinely honest I can't help wondering with every big signing what Rafa would have done with that cash. But I hope Dalglish has it right and I'm open minded about the signings.

I wonder what is Kenny's tactical understanding of the modern game compared to someone like Rafa's? Only time will tell again on that one. I'm optimistic, but not ultra confident; there's no way of telling how well Kenny will do now.

What's this management team of Comolli, Dalglish and Clarke? is it going to reap dividends or be a failure? How this whole thing works and how it all turns out is very interesting. None of us can draw any conclusions just yet because the management team as well as the football team is largely untested.

One thing that is unanimous should be that our owners are doing a very good job indeed. They have listened to the fans and given them what they want. At least we can be confident that anyone who manages Liverpool will be backed.

Expectation was always high when weve spent all the money we have ......

We needed to kick the ground running, instead we did that but somehow imploded in the second half.

I think we are lacking in fitness as a team, and that is a problem of the coaching staff, because the Sunderland players were running us to the ground in the second half, and if they did that, we will be chasing shadows against Arsenal.
Also, we are very static, no movement, don't know how we can change things before Arsenal, but Kelly has to start and so also Kuyt. Only positive for me is, Enrique looks good, also please keep Aqua, make him stay, we had no drive from mid-field in the second half, but again, I think that is down to fitness.

4 new signings one of which has been with the team less than 48 hours! Suarez and lucas only been back a week and had maybe 2/3 training sessions with the new lads due to mid week internationals if we remain unbeaten until the end of September we will be in one hell of a good position.

Sunderland have every possibility of being top 10, maybe 8 and will probably give all the top 6 teams a tough test (they beat Chelsea 3-0 away a few months ago)

Id rather draw today lower expectations and get a win (even a draw) at Arsenal, rather than winning today getting over hyped and losing down there next week.

No proper pre-season fitness for most of the team showed in the second half, Carrol was very poor during  it, and Flanagan, well the less said the better, might dampen some of the expectations and hype for himself and robinson. Henderson went missing for the most part.

Really disappointing after the half hour mark we just stopped playing football.

Beat Arsenal and we'd have got 4 points out of two games vs Sunderland (home) and Arsenal (away). Doesn't look that bad.
