Its been a while that Ive seen us being a threat when we get corners in the opposition box.  Raul is a tidy player, Kelly is a mean fucker, Ngog still doesnt smile, Maxi needs a mini diet and I think it would work better if we play Cole for 60ish minutes and then replace him with Pacheco.  Both are very similar and would take maximum advantage of their abilities when we attack teams.

Know why that is?? Gerrard wasn't taking them... winds me up that he never clears the 1st man yet persists in taking them!!!

If thats the case then considering the amount of caution we have shown up to now and for a long while, Gerrard and Meireles would be a pretty bold midfield line up. Im all for it mind you.

It would be, but given that Raul played the full game last night I suspect he will be on the bench. I always feel Lucas and Gerrard compliment each other well, not in terms of aptitudes or skillsets, simply because they communicate and alternate on going forward and staying back.

Not that I have a particular pro/anti stance on the team selection, just trying to think what I'm expecting to see. Lucas will be coming off the back of that screamer which will give him the world of confidence.

I think this is what Rafa hoped for when forced to field weaker players like Voronin etc. but often we wouldn't get the result for whatever reason (mainly in the league). Of course you have to take into consideration the opponents (who are still no mugs) and the drop in competition level. It will be interesting to see how we fare in the league under Roy with the same circumstances.

A Cole in the starting eleven on Sunday could be the difference between a draw, a loss and a win...we simply need his creativity and his ability to unlock defences. Gerrard can't carry the load himself.
This is what we do. And we do it very well. Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bM8gOyjeuc

Must say I was a little disappointed that Pacheco wasnt given more of a run last night. Would have liked to have seen him come on after an hour or so to give him a chance to get into the game.

As far as the actual performance goes, first half was much the same as every other game this season (and much of last). No invention. No purpose. No tempo. Poor passing and movement. Surrendering far too much space and allowing the opposition far too much time on the ball. The result being, Steau looked the better side at half time.

Second half was much better. Much higher tempo to our play. Suddenly we werent making simple balls look incredibly difficult. The first touch and movement of the players was much better. We also seemed to press them a lot more. There was more of a desire and more quality to match. The end result being, besides the second half against Arsenal, that was probably our best 45 minutes of football.

You can argue that the opposition wasnt the greatest, but in the first half they showed that they were no mugs. Add to that, that frankly, with our dire performances up to now, we could have been playing The Nags Head Select 11 with Del and Rodney up front and it wouldnt matter. A decent performance is not to be knocked at the moment.

Joe Cole did look a bit out of place at times last night. I mean, he looked that good...comfortable on the ball, showed good touch & skill, was aware of space, showed good movement, fully committed to the team etc. Indeed he looks like a player from a top four team.

Let's hope with Gerrard, Torres, Kuyt (when back fit) Joe Cole and Meireles (when fully settled in) we can start to play some positive, passing football that is pleasing to watch. I just want to feel inspired and entertained when watching us for the moment. At times last season, and this season so far, (without Cole) we looked slow, insipid and uninspiring.

Id agree with that. You couldnt fault him, even in that first half when I thought, as a team we were pretty poor (again), he was still the only one that looked capable of keeping hold of the ball and picking another red shirt out in tight areas.

His work rate was top drawer as well. I was having a moan at my dad last night about how we werent closing down and then, as if he heard me, Joe Cole went steaming across the half way line towards one of their centre halves and within a few seconds they had paniced and given us the ball back.

Im not sure whether its a tactic thing (to back off and not press the ball), but I would have liked to have seen Ngog, Babel, Maxi (as well as Cole) really pressing the opposition back four every time they had the ball. We did that more in the second half and looked much better for it.

We're playing teams well below Premier League standard, of course we look good. Good win, but look at the opposition.

We're playing with alot of our 2nd choice players and winning IMO its a good sign, the 2nd half especially really impressed me, we looked like a team.

It's great to see these lads getting their chance on the big stage and performing, it'll do wonders for confidence.

Just want to pay a quick mention to Spearing as well. Although I would love nothing more than to see him to well, I will admit that I havent been his biggest fan. He just hasnt convinced me that he will be good enough to ultimately become a first team regular.

Last night however, I think he deserves a mention because he did well for me. Tracked back well, was in the right place at the right time on more than one occasion. Yes he gave the ball away once or twice, but on the whole he kept it simple and kept the ball moving. Put in a couple of very good tackles as well.

If he could bring out them kind of performances regularly, and against better opposition, then I might have to start revising my opinion on the lad.

Well done Jay.

All the below is only based on what I can remember:

Reina - 6
Didn't have much to do really. Beaten by a good finish.

Kelly - 6
Tried hard but didn't have his best game. Got forward well to support attacks, but struggled with crossing, beating men and passing. Definitely
needs to improve in these areas if he is going to be a future right back. Good experience for him.

Konchesky - 5.5
Didn't support attacks as well as Kelly did, and I don't remember him getting involved in the game that much.

Agger - 7.5
Thought he looked quite good. Defended very well and started off a few attacks. Made good runs into midfield. Looked commanding at centre back
and hope he keeps his place.

Kyrgiakos - 7
Made the effort but I think it was him who was beaten for pace for the equalizer? Fantastic through ball though, so can't blame him too much.
Made the most of it diving for the penalty but at least put the team first. Defended alright and looked a threat at set pieces.

Spearing - 7
Got better as the game went on. I remember thinking how he looked lost during the first half but played much better when we had the impetus in
the second. Grew in confidence and started spraying passes around well. Valuable game time for him.

Meireles - 7
Impressed by him in his first full game for us. His physical movement and appearance somehow reminds me of Torres - think I need a new telly.
But he looked quick and mobile and you can tell there's intelligence in his passing even though they didn't all succeed. Couple of good shots
didn’t hurt. Wasn't able to assess the defensive side of his game.

Maxi - 6.5
Looked off the pace but tried hard. Failed to connect with a lot of passes. Got better in the second half but needs to improve a lot to regain
his form he had towards the end of last season.

Babel - 6
Struggled to get in the game. Played well in flashes but not so well at other times. At least he tried hard and he managed to get in a few
dangerous positions. Confused by the way he get subbed.

Cole - 7
Took his goal very well but looked off the pace in the first half. Always takes up intelligent space but would like to see him be more
productive sometimes. Second half he looked much better, kept asking for the ball and made good attacking runs towards goal.

Ngog - 7
Still got a lot to learn but played alright. Needs to hold up the ball better and bring people into it but he's improving - other players need
to make better runs around him. Took both his goals well.

Subs: Don't get a rating because they weren't on long enough. Lucas took his goal well though.

Overall:

I think a lot of people judge our games with only half their brain. That half is focussed on Liverpool's performance whilst the other half
normally ignores the opposition’s performance. With that mind, I think you have to give credit to Steaua. They played some great football in the
first half and they ran rings around us. It was almost a joy to watch - the passing, movement and confidence was there for all to see.
Sometimes there's not much you can do about it. Closing them down and hoping they make mistakes is the best action. But I would love to see our
team play with that kind of freedom sometimes. Technically, they were very good and I was surprised how good they were in the first half.

I think it's important to measure how good the opposition have played when measuring how well your own team have played. They're not mutually
exclusive and both affect each other. When City beat us 3-0 a few weeks ago, it wasn't just a case of us playing badly. It wasn't just a case
of them playing well either. But the respective team's forums wouldn't have been further apart in their respective cumulative opinions. You wouldn't get many City fans shouting about how short of ideas Liverpool were, or how Liverpool playing a 4-4-2 had left them naked tactically. Equally, you don't tend to get too many Liverpool fans saying how good City were on the whole, and how dangerous they looked. Liverpool fans saw it as our left back Agger getting raped by their winger, while City fans viewed it as Adam Johnson being unstoppable.

Our performance was a mixed bag. At times, we looked lost in the first half and I thought there were times when we looked like we could lose
the game. We weren't creating many good chances and we weren't playing good football. Steaua were playing through us and we seemed to be in a limbo between holding off and closing down - I sometimes think the team keeping its shape is stopping players from closing down (while defending) or making unpredictable runs (while attacking).

Goals certainly change games. Until we scored the penalty, we looked pretty dire. After scoring it, we looked good. It can completely change your perception of the game if you're not careful. On 54 minutes, it's easy to think "We've not played well at all tonight". Equally, after 56 minutes, you could be forgiven for thinking "We've played alright tonight". Goals change the supporters collective mindset as well as the teams set up and mentality. I see goals almost as a lottery. Buying more tickets than someone else will increase your chances of winning more than them. But it doesn't guarantee anything.

I thought that 4-1 completely flattered us. We weren't 4 times as good as Steaua. With 10 minutes to go, I thought 2-1 was a more accurate scoreline.

Overall, I would give us a rating of 6.5 for our performance. Not often you say that after a 4-1 victory.

A 4-1 win with a second tier team and still some whoppers are moaning.
Seems to me that a lot of our support prefer us to lose, to get their pre formulated whinges in.

P.S Well in Lucas and Jay Spearing, that should wind some necks in, but I doubt it.

Whatever about the offensive dynamics of a Liverpool team shorn of Carra, their goal tonight was a little soft, whether our line wasn't great, or the gap between kelly and soto was too big, it seemed a bit of a gift. I don't know would it have gone in if Carra had been on the pitch.
There was no pressure on the passer from either Meireles or Spearing, so he was able to line up and time the pass for the runner between centre and full-back who were both beaten for pace.

Dumitrescu's resigned after Steaua drew at the week end, btw. 6 weeks in the job.
