Stratford is a shit hole, with good transport links.

Doesn't matter much if can spend more time being out with the extra money saved.

stratford is hardly that bad and with the massive regeneration projects that have been going on for the last few years it is going to get much better.

Well, you're just wasting money on a 'home' you don't like being in in an area you don't like being in, just go to a nice area where it doesn't matter if you spend an evening in or an evening out?

Yeah it wasn't really a serious recommendation I suppose. It's only if you want somewhere cheap to stay and know you won't be spending too much time at home anyway then it could be worse (transport etc)

Well Stratford isn't as bad as some parts of East London, but it's just rough as fuck so I never really recommend it to people looking for a place.

If you're near Kings Cross you HAVE to go to the Flying Scotsman pub

You don't need me to tell you to appreciate your time down there. I go a couple of times a year for work and I love it, the train journey weaving through the beautiful English countryside apart, I just love being there for a matter of hours.
Get off at Euston, overcome my immediate and innate dislike for each person in front of me, get over the 20p charge for a piss and get down to the tube fast.

After that London comes alive, walking up the steps from any tube station gifts your eyes with magnificent buildings, statues or monuments. I was in awe last time I went.
One day I'll tell you about going through the Houses of Parliament - what a great Monday night that was.

On the night life side, I suppose we'll welcome a report back on that. Obviously there are the big venues but in general I'm told its crap. Put it this way, and no laughing, my in-laws scarpered to London a few years ago and have got to know the place. When they were home a few years ago and I took them to Mustard on Smithdown Road (I said don't laugh). It was when it was in its hype and buzzing with girls. Anyway, they claimed that from any residential destination in London they'd have to travel for 30 minutes or pay £30 in a cab. That kind of bar just wasn't at the end of the street.

London is a cracking city, if you're in good humour and have a few quid in your pocket. And for fuck's sake, stay out of the pubs. They're massively overrated and there's buckets of other things to see and do.

Was Lents already being watched before that comment, because it seems a bit harsh to me that his status should be changed for that comment when I've seen certain posters with 5,000+ posts say far worse?

Read his posts and you will find he is the arrogant one. Probably why he 'was' being watched in the first place. He seriously has a bit of a ''chood' I'd say.

I'll commute anywhere really; going to be working a lot over the 6 weeks anyway so not much socialising opportunities, I'm just looking for something that won't cost me a bomb really - e-mails a few flatshares etc but would ideally be on my own. I know this sounds soft but I'm going to require my own space quite a bit.   :-\

spareroom.co.uk is the best, get far fewer wierdos on there compared to other sites. We use that one when our room is free.

gumtree is ok, but higher proportion on wierdos.

If you want somewhere on your own, concerned about costs and not really fussed about size, there are normally a fair few studio type places which are very basic, but clean and cheap. Foreign students often use them...not sure how you go about finding them, but they are out there.

You should have no problem getting a summer let anywhere around the bigger universities, or indeed anywhere at all. I would try college websites if I were you, that's the sort of property that would be up for grabs in June and July.

Got to agree. In the 60s, 70s and part of the 80s they were boss areas and being from an Irish family we were in  and around those areas on a constant basis.

They aint like that now.

Shit, I rememeber when Ladbroke Grove was the place to be.

it still is! ;)

It's a small pocket really. For a part of London that is so well connected via transport, is close to the exit (M4), is next to the river, has lots of local schools, shops, hospitals etc, is only 25 minutes from the west end and is very close to the more affluent parts of town - it's a bit of a shithole.

Brilliant thread. I'm moving to London from the end of June, intially for 8 weeks but from September it'll be permanent...

I haven't sorted a place out yet as I'm knee deep in exam worry. Is it realistic to hope for a decent place for £150-200 a month in central?

I was thinking uni halls for the initial 2 month stint. Is that recommended?

I can't wait to move down; I love the hustle and bustle of central, and can't wait to discover more of the city when I get down there.

You'll find a studio, maybe a 1 bed at a stretch but it won't exactly be top notch.

Yeah that's what my initial searches brought up. It hit home how expensive it'd be when the search within my price bracket brought up bloody parking spaces. It hit home even more when I realised I wouldn't even be able to afford some of those parking spaces.

I think it'll have to be a bit further afield, at least when I make the permanent move. For the initial couple of months I was hoping to live in central even if in uni halls, but I think even they're really expensive.
