Barnes reiterating why words and gestures are just empty virtue signalling. A good read for the folks that took umbrage at his view of the Silva situation. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/oct/13/john-barnes-race-england-football-bernardo-silva-tweet

Nice one. Great that. Thanks for posting. His wisdom or emotional intelligence whatever you call it is superb. One of the best footballers and one of the greatest men we’ve had

I see Barnes been talking some shit lately to the media...

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.skysports.com/amp/football/news/11669/11873191/liverpool-did-brendan-rodgers-a-disservice-says-john-barnes

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/john-barnes-says-liverpools-players-20991281.amp

He loves the club,us & the city.

Quote
"It's an exciting time because we have now given Jurgen support. We trust him and we always have," said Barnes.

"When you have that harmony and togetherness, the fans, the Liverpool family or football family, generally speaking, you can succeed.

"Liverpool haven't got better players than Manchester United or Arsenal or Tottenham. What they have is more harmony, more belief, togetherness, and belief in the manager."

And after scanning both artices,I see no shit spoken.

The idea that Rodgers would have achieved the same as Klopp is an idiotic statement. Try just comparing their European records alone in their first couple of  years.

Call a spade a spade is a phrase I've heard years

I've just googled and saw this "The term originated from a translation of an ancient Greek phrase, but is considered offensive by some due to the later use of the word "spade" as a racial slur."

I have genuinely never heard that it was racist. If I knew that I wouldn't have said it. I apologize for that.

Haven’t seen any info but that’s more than a bit depressing on the face of it.

It's practically a law. There are famous exceptions but Liverpool FC are usually managed by socialists (including Hodge) and contain players who are Tory.

Why is everyone getting their knickers in a twist just on one photo?

How about we get some quotes and context over the photo first?

Most people in the public eye will cross paths at some point. It's very hard not to. Doesn't mean they all agree even if they appear in the same photos or even if - shock, horror - they even shake hands when introduced to each other.

She was always a c*nt. But I guess at the time, to those not really paying attention, it would have been hard to judge exactly how much of a c*nt she was going to be and the scale of devastation she was going to be capable of inflicting on the country.

If Bob did invite her, then it's something that at the time would have set him at odds with the people of the city. My family despised her from the heart even before she was PM.

I'm only guessing here but would have thought it'd been John Smith (back left) as Chairman (probably had Tory connections) or even Yosser who was a definite Tory. I would hope Bob was only there through duty. Like any politician, she'd want to be associated and photographed with successful folk.

Hahaha great post and point!

I remember Emlyn saying near one election something along these lines, "I've always been a Red [LFC]. But now I'm a blue! [Tory]".

ive gotten some shit for saying this in the past, mostly from the hard left of rawk, but I really don’t get this whole ‘you can’t be Tory and have an association with LFC’ thing at all, it’s just really weird as I’d wager a fair few of our players will vote Tory on Thursday, some of our greats (one you have mentioned there) have been open about being being Tories and John Smith, the chairman in our greatest period was a Tory so I’m guessing amongst a certain section of our support that period of great success should have an asterisk against it?

Anyone catch Digger on Sky’s ‘The debate’ earlier tonight?

I’m no fan of the show, nor it’s presenter. But it was worth watching because John Barnes is as exceptional a polemicist as he was a footballer. His co-footballer guest was Darren Bent, and the subject, racism in football.

Digger argued coherently, passionately and convincingly that it’s too restrictive to view the subject through the prism of professional sport, and (my word not his) actually counterproductive. Racism in sport, argued Barnes, is merely a reflection of racism in society, and that should be our focus.

The programme is well worth catching up on, if you have the facility.

Speaks a hell of a lot of sense and is correct in what he thinks and says.

As he states, those who abused Sterling don't believe they are superior to him, they believe the group they belong to is superior to the group Sterling belongs to. We need to stop it at its core, parents need to NOT teach their kids racism is OK, to make the world a better place.

well said

what makes me shudder is even in early 90s i remember growing up thinking the n word was the proper term for a black person. I would openly use it like saying someone from Liverpool is scouse, thats what i thought it was supposed to be like, didnt realize how offensive it was

when i was about 9 i got in a lot of trouble with folks for calling a relative of mine the n word, i actually couldnt understand why people were going nuts at me, i genuinely thought it was ok

i think things have come a long way but more is needed, in 2020 there shouldnt be a need to still have to drive home anti racism as things like footballers walking off the pitch because of monkey chants should be in the long distant past. It never should have happened to begin with.
