Forget about long term issues with Gomez, he is going to be a great defender for us for years to come. I believe he will show his true form at some point this season.

Until then, it is a worry - both he and VVD have been off their games since we won the title, but VVD will always be the last to be dropped so it is Joe who may make way for Matip if a change is made.

I think Joe will get the next two games to sharpen the partnership then, as the games ramp up, Matip will be rotated in but who plays the majority of games will depend on how they react.

The midfield need to be doing their jobs mind.

Yes, there were so many things wrong about the third goal and Gomez played his part along with the midfielders. For the first goal, Klopp said that the FBs were deeper than the CBs. This happened because Gomez stepped up without communicating. His positioning was off. But forget the goals. Even outside of that, Gomez was the one breaking the line often.

Van Dijk hasn't been himself, but it's clear that he's the best defender in the world and even the best ever defenders have made mistakes, but what separates them is that they recover easily, so some of us are not fussed. Hopefully Gomez recovers his form and cements his place as Matip is injury prone and we don't have any other senior CB.

Right now, Matip imo is the better defender, however Gomez has still so much time to improve as he's still young and I imagine he will.

In the second half I thought he was truly excellent tonight. Powerful, controlled and his passing was crisp and well executed. Really bodes we’ll moving forward. Aubameyang got nothing out of him.

Joe had an excellent game last night. He wants to keep his place on the first team. He made one exceptional tackle right at the end where he tracked across the penalty area and made a last ditch tackle.
