Am not claiming this is better than the original but I love this version of Won't Get Fooled Again by the Roots and the Who, played on kids' instruments.

(Sorry don't know how to embed!)

Saw this last year when it came out but it's just as brilliant as when I saw it then. I've loved a lot of these that they've done actually.

Although in the "post covid world", watching that many people in such close proximity gives me the sweats haha.

Not better than the original, but interesting to watch the crowd's reaction.

This is a bittersweet one. The Harry Nilsson version of Without You is in my opinion streets ahead of the original arrangement by Badfinger. But it is a real downer when you read up on what happened to the latter act. Having been completely ripped off by their manager both of the co-writers of the song eventually took their own lives - with one of the deaths being in the direct context of disputes over the royalties for the song after the massive success of the Nilsson version.

To counteract the gloom I'll put up what I think is Badfinger's tour-de-force which I don't think has been covered (or at least not covered better). For those of you that have watched it (I haven't yet) I believe that one of their other songs soundtracks the final scene of Breaking Bad.

This is a weird one in that the "cover" was written/recorded for Elliot Smith's original band Heatmiser, but the version he did on his solo album came out first and the version by Heatmiser only surfaced in 2013, and it is a cracker.

In a weird way it's a song that is so good that there's a couple of covers that I maybe prefer to the original. I always think it is testament to the Beatles' songwriting that a song like this can work in so many styles.

I'm in the 1% of people that likes the Slits' version.

Technically though, Marvin's version is also a cover version as it was recorded by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and Gladys Knight and the Pips first. Gladys's version is the best, in my opinion.

I adore Elliott Smith and 'Elliott Smith' (the album) is my second favourite album of his after 'Either/Or'. And yeah, his best stuff is his acoustic stuff but I think this version is better than the album one. It'd be out of place on the album and I'm glad it's a standalone cover. It makes sense it's Heatmiser as well, it really sounds like their stuff.
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now.

Sara Bareilles is so much more talented than virtually all of her lip-synching, auto-tuning peers. She doesn't dress like a Vegas hooker so she doesn't get the same recognition. It's a shame. Her own writing is excellent but she's also done some wonderful covers.

Not necessarily a cover version but a 're-imagination' of the original.

if this dosen't melt the heart strings then I don't know

Tori Amos doing a cover of U2's brilliant soul searching Running To Stand Still

yes, it's a bootleg recording but the sound is very good

I even like the fact that you can hear a guy at the start telling his girlfriend what song it is when the crowd applaud

she's also playing it at Red Rocks which has a special place in U2's history

Impossible to beat the original. This does add a certain Covid-2020 feeling with her delicateness and his frailty.

I always assumed that any cover of Neil Young's Cortez the Killer would be lame, but this Dave Matthews with Warren Haynes is alive. It gives the studio version a run for the money.

But the 1991 Neil version is one of the great re-tellings of American mythology, partly because nobody owns such a pampered Gibson Les Paul as him, which sounds like a dream

Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt (NIN)

1,000 Homo Dj's cover of Supernaut (Black Sabbath - only Sabbath cover i've heard better than the original, most sabbath covers are fucking terrible - honourable mention tho to White Zombie's cover of Children of the Grave, quality cover)

and one im sure has been mentioned many times - Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower (Dylan)

ah and one i came across very recently https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzxag7U3Snk Daniela Andrade cover of Crazy (Gnarls Barkley - i didn't even like the original but the cover is cracking)

That Supernaut cover is great (and the best song on the Sabbath tribute album by a mile) but it isn't the best Sabbath cover:

Have been enjoying Come On Up to the House, a compilation of Tom Waits covers by female artists. It's a really great album. The hipsters tend to prefer Tom's shouty, bluesy Beefheart tunes, but I prefer the ballads, and there are some great reinterpretations of some of them on this record. All 12 songs are great. Are they better than the originals? I would say, yes, some of them are. Corrine Baily Rae's version of Jersey Girl for example.

I wouldn't say 'better' cos, you know, Sam Cooke, but Letslie Odom does a hell of a job on A Change Is Gonna Come in the One Night in Miami film

Maybe not better than the original, but I'm liking it all the same.
