Liverpool's Best Ever Jersey No. Xs
« on: March 4, 2016, 08:19:16 am »
Time for some opinions from RAWK's finest!

We truly have had some LEGENDS who has graced our club and there are just so many great man and brilliant players that have worn our jerseys with pride.

I'm just wondering, are there any jersey numbers that is just synonymous with the player for you or do you think there is a best ever number 9 for example for Liverpool.

For me, these are the players that come to mind when you say Liverpool's number X;

4 = Sami Hyypia
7 = Kenny Dalglish
8 = Steven Gerrard
10 = Michael Owen..Sigh.  :butt Luis Garcia

Because of squad numbers this will be slanted to modern players as there is less competition.

14 - Xabi Alonso

Im curious who will get the vote for number 1?

That reminds me
25 - Pepe Reina

from pre squad number days
6- Alan Hansen

Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, Nicolas Anelka, El Hadji Diouf, Djibril Cissé, Fernando Torres, Andy Carroll, Iago Aspas, Rickie Lambert, Christian Benteke

This 'Number 9' shirt really is a bit hit and miss, isn't it? :D

16 was my 'lucky number' that I always used to knab for Sunday league/Youth games for some reason. Didi Hamman...

Good point! It did not occur to me when I started this topic. Many of the 'best ever' numbers in my list are from the Houllier and Rafa eras.

Apart from Stevie, I can't think of many players from those eras who would get into an all time 11.

I loved Nicol, but he moved numbers quite a bit?  I saw him wear `11 once.

He wore no 4 on this day though.  Happy times

No.3 - Gerry Byrne
No.11 - Ian Callaghan (although close with Souness)

Gerry Byrne - spot on number 3 [left back]

But after this is where it starts to get a bit subjective and depends upon who occupied a particular shirt during your own most formative years which for me was the time when shirt numbers actually represented positions on the pitch not lottery numbers!

So for me Thommo [that's the incredible Peter of course not Phil] will always be number 11 [outside left] and Cally will always be number 7 [outside right]

Similarly Sir Roger will always be number 8 [inside right] and St John number 9 [centre forward]

Chrissie lawler will always be number 2 [right back], Rowdy will always be number 5 [centre half], Willie Stevo will always be nunber 6 [left half] and Gordon Milne number 4 [Right Half]

The only anomaly is Tommy Smith at number 10 which up until Tommy Smith was always the shirt for the  inside left position [the deeper of the two inside forwards] but Shanks dropped Smithy back alongside Rowdy to form the twin centre half partnership which up until then had never been done. It had always been one of the wing halfs dropping deeper.

Since then numbers have meant absolutely fuck all to me apart from Kevin Keegan and Kenny in the number 7 shirt.

Good eh.

That's the big thing, the generational differences. To me Barnes was imperious, he played football at a different level to those around him, like Stevie in his pomp, Suarez and the King. The difference the King and Digger had though was that they had 10 others not too far behind them.

10. Owen

I feel sorry for our younger fans when I see things like this. Make no mistake, Michael Owen was a very good player for us. But by putting him there I've got to come to the conclusion that you never saw John Barnes (1987-91 version).

John Barnes is probably the most exciting player I've seen for Liverpool over the last 30 odd years. Maybe he isn't the best (Gerrard) player to have played over that period but he's the most exciting. Only Suarez for his final 18 months can even get remotely close to him.

John Barnes was unbelievable in that 1987-1991 time period. 75 goals in his 1st 4 season from midfield (Suarez scored 82 goals over his 4 years at the club). God knows how many assist he got over that time period. He wasn't some lazy winger either who came to life when he had the ball. John Barnes was defensively sound too. He worked so hard to protect his full back too. Brilliant with both feet, boss in the air. The really wasn't anything he couldn't do. I can only remember 1 mistake he made in those 4 years.

If John Barnes was playing now he'd be at the same level as Messi and Ronaldo. The way the game has gone over the last 20 years, he'd have more protection and his skill set would be magnified in the modern game. He'd be the 1st 100M player. He'd be scoring 30-40 goals a season from midfield.

He was fucking boss was John Barnes and I feel sorry for any Liverpool fan that didn't get to witness his brilliance.

I was born in 80 so I was lucky enough to see Barnes, Kenny, Beardo etc.

Only number 19 I can even remember is Ryan Babel....

Maybe its a curse. Once we get a decent number 19, we'll win number 19.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.
