Clyne and right back is the least of our problems especially with Milner and TAA able to cover for him as well. He is solid and dependable, you don't need world class in every position. You only have to look at Fergie's title winning sides to realise that.

The teams that have dominated European football in recent years are Barca, Bayern and Madrid. Teams with world class players in almost every position. The more world class players you have, the better you tend to be.

I also disagree that RB is the least of our problems. Our full backs play a huge role in our attacking play.

Also, I'd say looking at Ferguson's teams for evidence is a bit pointless really because he is a completely unique case in the history of the premier league obviously.

Has Clyne ever played for us, or elsewhere, as a LB? I guess not his natural side, but TAA seems to be making a name for himself and I feel it may be a little unfair to just drop him as soon as Clyne is fit. Plus TAA free-kicks and corners are boss.

I like the sturdiness of Clyne but TAA is proving to be almost as solid and potentially a better attacking threat. Clyne does too much of the same when attacking I feel.

I'm not even sure how close to fitness Nathaniel is, he seems to have fallen off the radar somewhat.

I remember him playing left back (and scoring I think) in a cup game.

Looks like he is due back on 27th August, same date as Coutinho. :)

Could do with him back to fitness and give Trent a well deserved rest.

Normally when he says that it means long-term. We haven't been told what's up with him have we? Maybe won't see him for a long while yet.

Does anyone know how long is left on his contract? Not an immediate concern especially with TAA coming through but I'm sure he ran his contract down at both Palace and Southampton (or certainly left on the cheap with less than 1 year left) so it's been in the back of my mind that he might do likewise here.

Starting to sound similar to the Henderson injury, that started off as a month out as well.
Then in the midddle out pops a smiling glen johnson pulling up his jersey to reveal a t-shirt of suarez with a text saying. "OUR SUAREZ IS A FRIEND TO ALL COLOURS!"

That's not good at all. Is this squad for all group matches so he will not be able to play in the Champions League until January, or can you make changes to it?

Just for the group phase, think you may be able to change it at some point but would have thought he'd just be included if he was anywhere near close. All a bit odd though, Jurgen said at the Bayern tournament he wouldnt make Watford but would be back soon.

It is a bit strange that there is barely anything said about him. It's like he doesn't exist.

So if he isn't registered for the Champions League that's safe to assume he won't be back before November/December.

If there's any position we can cover for injuries it's FB. We've got ridiculous depth at it, Milner, Trent and Gomez all there to step-up when needed.

Yeah but Clyne is our only experienced right-back. He played a shitload of games there last season. He will be missed.

There's a large gap between clyne and those names especially defensively
Luckily it's only full back but him being out weakens us

Milner is an experienced fullback who'd be even better on the right side. There'd be no drop-off at all on either side of the ball on the contrary.

UEFA and PL home grown rule differs.

He would come under Association trained player and a maximum of only 4 can be named as such.

We already have Milner / Sturridge /Lallana /Henderson/Ox.

So don't think that really matters .http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid=2400510.html

The fact that Lallana is named with a November return makes Clyne's omission a real worry. Klopp was pretty vague (unusually so) last time I heard him answer a question about him??

You trying to claim Milner is as good a defender at full back as Clyne? (see Babu's excellent full back thread for more guidance on this)

Not that its particularly the wrong place to do it.....but not sure we really need that much speculation and guesswork over what the issue may or may not be.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Clyne is named in the Premier League squad right ?

If it was that certain that he won't be back till January surely he wouldn't have been named in the PL squad as well?

Really wierd considering Clyne is one of the fittest players in our squad.

People have been v quick to mention TAA as the first choice, personally think Clyne would be ahead of him still. Much sounder at defending at this stage (no slant on TAA) and with a pacey fella in front of him looking to cut in, he wouldve been even better IMO

This makes the decision not to sign a centre back even more baffling, Gomez is obviously being lined up at right back along with TAA! So we've got one back up CB!
