I've just been watching a youtube playlist of various hip-hop, old school and newish beats and it got me wondering...
Which comes first, the beats or the flow?
I saw an interview with Hank Shocklee and Chuck D of Public Enemy and they described their music-making process.
Basically, each member had a various musical instrument or drum machine or sampler or turntable. They then proceed to make what they want and record the whole lot at once. Hank Shocklee then would listen back to the whole aural mess and would find a 5-8 second section where everything just fitted perfectly, and then took the song from there.
So, to the genii of RAWK, especially the hip-hop heads, what do you think happens when the music is made?
